The Days are Getting Harder to Get Through

The Days are Getting Harder to Get Through

It's the first day of winter - lovely weather - and it's a lovely day today too - but I feel as if I am walking through deep water - or something very dense -

It happens every year - and this year I have done well - perhaps it has been unusually sunny and mild - and perhaps having joined this website - and throw in the psychologist - I have managed better - but yesterday - aaahh - that was a bad day and I am not sure if I turned my computer on - of if I did - I just wasn't capable of reading properly - I could not respond

It was not the best day of my life - but not the worst either

So it's all about my son dying and the circumstances - and I rang Life Line and talked to a wonderful woman there for quite a long time - and at the end I was exhausted.

I can't put the afternoon back together - it was too early for my medication but I stretched out on my bed and slept - at some stage I woke up and took my medication thinking I would not sleep - but did - and woke early which was fine - but it gave me a lot of time to think

What I had talked about with the lady at Life Line was the story I tell myself over and over - I did my best without support - and it the lack of support that made it all so hard. I would imagine that parents would care about their children having trouble with a badly-wired child who was always in trouble - and would care and follow through with all they could - and I have proved that I helped my son until he died - but mine didn't

It's terrible that my son died - it is terrible when any young person died - and I am pretty sure my son would not have lived a long life anyway - but the failure of family help - and the man I married who wanted a son so badly did not help - could not help - and the criticism of so many people - church people too - about this uncontrollable child - it tears me up -

This morning I wondered how I lived through each day - and I thought about my life now - and I live one day at a time - and these memories are so hard to live with. I understand people who have limitations - but I cannot understand how a whole family can turn on one member with a serious problem

They blamed me at the time - before he died Dad told me I had done something he could not have done - and except for a short time really Dad and I were always on good terms - and Dad has been gone quite some time

But still - I am outside of most things - I get on well with people - but alas - those memories curse me - and I don't want them - but they are here

And I am safe myself - but as the anniversary of my son's death gets nearer - I feel damned when I know in my mind and my heart - I did all I could for this damaged child - and I don't feel any guilt

After all - I have thought about it all these years - and of course - I think about him every day - why should I not

I so understand about seeing your mum dying of cancer yet still have no feelings that this was helpful - or hopeful - and how disappointing to leave knowing what needed to be said was not -

2.5 years before she died my mother was snarling at people - and I would not put up with it and told her if she drove me away that day - I would not go back - and I didn't see her until just before she died and her regret was so obvious - and we could not talk to each other - she coudn't talk and I knew she couldn't hear me - and no words got in the way - I sat there wiping her eyes and stroking her hand.

As we are of Northern Irish descent I feel that we did communciate - and it took time for me to translate what had passed between us - but without her resentment and my need to protect myself with satire or silence - I had the greater gift - my sister never went to that place where death is inevitable - and I wonder how shallow relationships can be without the knowledge that all the earthly stuff ends - and whatever comes - comes - and we cannot know what that will be

But for me - that is nothing to be afraid of - maybe old-age is preparing us to leave - let's get it over God - I could hear that's what my father meant.

You have lost it from both sides - as I have - and your daughter was prickly - my son was destructive - but I believe there is no pain nor sorrow in heaven - we have to get there first - and maybe death is the filter - we have to leave our bodies behind -

It's an exciting thought - what is on the other side of that door?

I like your idea of writing a book - I have lost my hand-writing skills since I have used a computer - which is omstars - I wrote my Minor Thesis is 1991 - but I will get a lovely notebook and write it to her and collect pictures and put my life in there for her - and leave it when I leave - and maybe my daughter - who can be prickly - will read it - and understand more of the complex life I have led - a lot of which she does not understand

And how can she

How time flies - I need to stop this and have my shower and get ready for today after a weekend of slacking off

But I so totally love what is being said on this thread - and it is continuing - which is truly wonderful

I cannot imagine your experience losing twins so close together - were they premature?

You say you knew they were going to die - I understand - I knew my son would die too - and how - he was self-destsructive

I wonder if it does help knowing - it was still a shock when it happened - my first thought that his troubled life was over and it was a relief - but that was short-lived.

  • And your husband - refusing to believe in them after they were born - this I cannot understand - my son's father - adoptive - as I am his adoptive mother - gave up on him - so I understand how all the more painful that must have been - oh - aw - what agony - there were those tiny babies with some kind of problem that would make them die - I can't imagine - but how can men turn on their infant children?

I have always commemorated my son's death - sometimes it has been lonely - sometimes painful - sometimes I have done something memorial - he died right in the middle of winter so by that date I know that spring is returning - the days are beinging to be a tiny bit longer and if I wake in the night I can hear the magpies starting to mate - and my son always called them the "orkle-arkle" birds - I feel they are rejoicing in life - so I must too - and I do

But here's the thing - it takes time to find the still-point - and when we do - we know it is there - and so - seeing as the still-point refers to the point on a clock or watch face where the hands are joined - that is when we stop and remember and allow what we feel - the ends of the hands of the clock or watch measuring time - seconds, minutes, hours - and that regular time we tell whenever we look at an analogue dial - we can tell the passage of a day in tiny bits or by hours - add the date and - days, months, years

So at times we live on the outside of the spin of time - and our lives go on - other times we live at the still-point - and that time - has no measure - yet is wonderfully valuable

I am so sorry you lost your twins - whatever the reason - and your husband had buried their lives as well as their deaths - but that is his loss

My thoughts are with you - in that still-point - when time is at it's most valuable - and we think the best of our thoughts

You have written such beautiful sentiments here @Decadian

Sending love to all of you .......

I think men doing what they do with emotions that way is just another way of trying to cope, but they don't have that special courage required to go through the pain. They just shut it down, but in doing so, they miss all the special, special little heart-songs that are found in the wake of tragedy ..........

Those bitter, bitter-sweet things like the "orkle-arkle" birds, or sunflowers popping up unexpectedly in my mother's memory, or a gift once given, or a favourite colour appearing again and again.

They anaethesize their hearts, but that is just freezing everything. Maybe it thaws slowly, and they can manage the little droplets, but not the flood ......... who knows ? The journey is so different for everyone.

Peace.

Understanding.

Hooe.

Love.

These are treasures left in the wake of the storms of life. Often they are in pieces and it takes a long time to work them out and glue them back together. But we have time. And we have each other.

Re: The Days are Getting Harder to Get Through

Hi @Appleblossom

Gradually I am working through comments that were so wonderful when I was batting - it was bad for a few days

But how quickly I got over it - and as @Former-Member says - it is not necessary to say anything special - but just be there -

One thing I learned early was that there are no "right words" and in that moment - so long ago now - when I first found Compassionate Friends - when someone was hugging me - I found the thing to say or to write when I found myself with a newly bereaved - "There are no right words that I can say to console you" - and in those few words - I have said all I need to - that the grief people endure - and mostly this is for bereaved parents - but anyone who has lost someone so close it is too painful getting from one day to the next we feel lost and alone -

And this is it - there is nothing anyone can say to take away the grief - but to say this - we acknowledge the terrible loss sustained - and that there is nothing that can be done - but we do let people know that we understand we are out of our depth -

Too many people run away - scared they will say the wrong thing - do the wrong thing - and I am not talking about strangers here - but other family members and close friends - they don't want to be upset - they don't want to rock their boat

Many years back when my grief was still fresh I had a dream - I was in a boat with my family - and I stood up - and they all yell and/or sang

"Sit down, sit down, sit down - you're rocking the boat"

And I stepped out of the boat into two feet of water and walked up to the beach where they were giving away icecream - and that moment - that is still here today - still right - it's not the boat rocking that is the problem - it's how much water is under it

Yes @Appleblossom - you are right - I am an easy person to get on with - but I do have an edge - there are things in this world have the power to invoke my ire - but I have learned that no emotion is wrong - it is - and it's what we do with it that is important

With grief - what we need is people to care - but also - to be ordinary - to allow the universe to maintain its balance - and not to try and change people - but rather - let them see how much love there can be - and fear less we will say or do the wrong thing -

Re: The Days are Getting Harder to Get Through

Wow @Decadian. That was beautifully written. I think I'll take much of what you said onboard. I have struggled with others grief because I'm always so scared I'll make it worse but I do desperately want to open my heart to it and be there for people who are experiencing grief. My biggest problem is that I'm a 'fixer' . I want to fix or take away others pain. I'm learning that this is unhealthy for all involved. I was raised in a family who controlled any 'dark' emotions and hid anything difficult from us. I never went to a funeral or said goodbye to a pet or anything involving grief so I've not learned how to deal with it. It is through people like you that I'm just learning this now and so I thank you. 😊💜

Re: The Days are Getting Harder to Get Through

Ah @Former-Member

I grew up in a family that did not discuss things - and still wonder how my siblings and I were supposed to know what to do in a world we were not prepared for

And one of those things was death - and yet - where I lived - I knew when people died -

But I wonder the carpet stayed on the floor with everything that was brushed underneath it

I never got to this point in my life overnight - but maybe my parents - who were very young when I was born - wanted to protect us from life - and that can't happen

And you are a fixer - I guess I am too - but we need to protect ourselves first - and these life lessons are tough - but imo - worth it

People sometimes say the wrong thing - but I can tell you this - the worse way people behave is crossing the street when they see me coming - it happened 30 years ago and things are so different - but to this day

There was a life and that life has gone

True in most people's lives - and there is no way to fix death

As I am a fixer too - I have found my way through the maze and my loss is not in vain - it will never be in vain

You have a good heart @Former-Member - follow it
