A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

It's so hard but you are very patient with your life conditions, @outlander. I know it probably feels like you are not, but it's difficult circumstances you are dealing with. I really believe your life will get better over time. Hugs for what you have to go through for now.

Hi @eth, I'm awake after a few hours asleep. Just checking in, on the chance that you are around too and are up for a chat.

Re: A long rave

Since everyone seems to be asleep or otherwise engaged tonight, I will focus my sleepless mind by writing another rave here.

Feeling much better as the lurgy lifts. Still coughing in my sleep and wheezing but it's far less than it was a couple of days ago, when my struggle to breathe was giving rise to panic. What a gift, a simple, clear breath.

It's so quiet in these early hours this Sunday. Quieter than usual. That's probably partly because my computer recently got a new power supply unit, with a fan that doesn't whir continuously as it used to do. Now, the only sound I am hearing is my fingers on the keyboard and a pulsing, high pitched, static in my ears (tinnitus probably). I have spent a lot of time in my life listening to music loud. I'm lucky that pulsing sound is not more intrusive really.

Just read an interesting article about how we may be addicted to artificial light in our modern lives, and how this may effect sleep and give rise to insomnia. The article extols the virtues of the dark and how it can put us in touch with deeper awareness in ourselves, our true desires, our spiritual connections, other good things. Meditation with eyes closed may be one way to access these deeper spaces within ourselves, without the radical step of not using artificial light in our lives. By the logic of the article, I should now be lying in bed in the dark, relaxedly accepting that I wake up every few hours and gently allowing the wisdom of the dark to wash over me and eventually lull me back to sleep. But I am a very addictive person, and lying in the dark in the middle of the night makes me personally feel very tense and even afraid. So here I am raving about nothing much instead.

Just a reminder that there is never any need to respond to these long posts by me. They are really a kind of self-therapy, or a way of just getting myself through the night without too much angst, though I always appreciate any responses I receive.

As dawn approaches, I know too that sleep is likely to come again for me soon...

Hugs for you Mazy

Hope your sleeping right now 🙂 The dark thing you spoke of, I can relate to it - I can't sleep if there's any noise or light! When I go to the Center of my Universe I have to cover the entire car with a tarp, place a large fleecy lined piece of black cloth over the windscreen, a couple of thick dark towels over the canopy side windows, and hang a black sheet folder into 4 over the back window 🙂 It's quite the process 😄 There's nothing I can do about the noise, the likes of the air-conditioner running {which seems to be a 24 hour, all year round thing in my Center} which the outer unit is right beside my car! and although it's classed as rural, . . . it's suburbia . . . and it's renowned for being a rough area - so lots of late night partying, with much yelling and screaming in the distance, . . . any day of the week. It's probably another reason why I can't cope for too many days there, I think it may start to 'muck' with my sleep pattern, which in turn simply 'mucks' with my head.

I had a little look at the article you read, a lot of it makes common sense - there's no other critter that traps light like us. In fact I don't think there'd be many that are active both day and night like us. But then I don't think there's any other critter on this Planet that's anything like us. Indeed I can't help thinking our evolution hasn't been entirely natural for our Planet. I can't for one second, believe that ours is the only Planet in an ever expanding Universe {which I happen to believe is a Multi-verse, and when 2 Universe membranes touch the elements of both are shared} that holds life. Who's to say that a higher intelligence, . . . perhaps a completely different intelligent species from another World, hasn't experimented on us - or more to the point our ancestral Primates? Here on Earth we Human Beings experiment on everything, seeing it as a necessity though sometimes very negative, means of progress. Is it that hard to believe that life-forms from another place/planet could be just as destructive as our own - only on a bigger scale?

I really enjoy your raves, they're so very real - like your just trying to get enough thoughts out of your head to slow the spin a bit. I'm so glad to hear your lurgy is lifting 🙂 and I hear you about that clear, simple gift . . . of life, as without it there is none! Yay for the new power-supply unit 🙂 I find the fan the most deadly component of a computer, if that goes it's like cooking the motor on your car - you can kiss the whole computer goodbye! I wonder if I have tinnitus, though the sound that I hear is like a high-pitched squeal, often sounding like it comes from only 1 ear; there's nothing I can do to stop it and sometimes it will go on for days! I used to listen to a lot of very loud music too, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and later bands like AC/DC, Jimmy Barnes, etc. Loud and angry music, which seems to be very popular with teenage generations, as they reach a time in their lives where they begin to comprehend just how bad the World's situation really is.

I also love responding to your raves, it gives me a chance to rave 🙂 I know I don't have to if I don't feel up to it, I cherish that I can choose when to rave to you and don't have to worry if I don't 🙂

The pic isn't up yet, I wonder what it is?

Continuously streaming the love @Mazarita

Re: A long rave

Good morning, Niqua. Thanks for sending me a long rave back this morning. I really appreciate it. Here comes another one for you.

I can see how the dark might be a necessity for your sleeping after living in a remote place where you can get real dark most nights. The stars must be so amazing where you are. It's really good that you keep your sleep regular, so wise. I have yet to get there. Maybe if I lived in the country too I might stand a better chance.

I agree that there's no other creature on earth like us, even our close relatives in the primate family. I too have often thought about the possibility of alien interference in our make up. I don't tend to go too far with these thoughts because they can only really be speculation, but interesting to ponder from time to time. Above all, I suppose I think most of what we know are stories. I tend not to believe absolute truths about anything. Life seems far to complex and relative for that.

Really glad you enjoy my raves. I enjoy writing them. Yes, it does help focus my brain when its got too many random thoughts firing off left, right and centre. That's most of the time, I guess, except when I'm involved in writing, video making, conversation, etc. I also like the walks on the beach for the way they help me process my thinking. In that case it's probably because the physical activity helps integrate mind and body. Out there taking one step after the other at the edge of the apparently infinite ocean, my thoughts can still be chaotic, but my body, and perhaps especially nervous system, seems to be able to absorb them better.

Yes, the old power unit on the computer was causing sudden restarts out of the blue, probably as a fail safe to protect the rest of the components when it all got too hot. Fortunately, with the new unit, the computer is no longer doing that. It was rather disconcerting!

Your high pitched squeal in one ear does sound a bit like tinnitus. Mine is with me 24/7, 7 days a week. I don't always focus on it though, mostly just in the quieter moments. In fact I think one of the treatments for tinnitus is to learn how to defocus on it so that it is not so intrusive. As far as I know there are no ways to stop the actual noise in your ears once you've got it. But I'm not up for googling that sh&* this morning. I might be completely wrong about that.

The bands you mention, I remember them from my youth. I didn't listen to any of them much, except I saw Cold Chisel live a number of times when I was about 17, before Jimmy Barnes got really huge. My favourite from that band was Ian Moss. Had a big crush on him back then. Yes, I remember being very angry when I was younger about what I perceived the older generation had left behind for us young ones. I didn't understand then that most of us, young and old, are almost completely powerless to do anything about how the world is, except in very small, often ineffectual ways. That's a pretty bleak view, I guess, but it is what I think.

You never have to worry about writing or not writing to me. I know we will connect again for as long as we are here on the forum. Magical friends with freedom and no obligation aside from the impulse of our own hearts.

I don't know why the pic isn't up. I posted it almost five hours ago! Have sent a message to the moderator today to try to jog it along.

Well, I suppose that's a long enough rave, though all I'll be doing after I post it is falling asleep in a chair or going back to bed. Haven't clocked up enough hours overnight and am still very tired this morning. But I am aiming to get out for a beach walk in mid afternoon. And might end up at friend's place tonight with any luck. If I was really good, I might start tackling all the washing I need to do to try to decontaminate everything from the worst germs of the lurgy. I've suddenly got a lot of washing to do!

Ciao for now, friend.
