A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

I did read your posts on the 'Home' thread, @eth. Heavy stuff you experienced. So good that there has been support for you in different parts of the forum. Glad it's the weekend for you too.

Re: A long rave

good morning @eth @Mazarita

and all others passing by

have been staying close to living with ourselves thread...occasionally responding to others who mention me..

sorry to read of your struggles @Mazarita...you had a huge experience...such a success...reunions...incredible journey for you...very taxing when you finally returned home and slowed down...

change of medications on top adding to the body objecting..

I know that you did not sleep either @eth

I have not slept properly for the last 3 nights and think it is to do with reduction of pain killers and slight increase of anti depressant which my new gp is telling me is a painkiller as well...I am not convinced on that one...am not willing to increase that any further...layed there in bed feeling as though I had taken something to rev me up....felt pulse rate was higher....heart racing...ended up getting up and taking a prn...slept eventually...or should I say sedation kicked in and I awoke early very stiff in one spot...so not relaxing sleep more like...knocked out...

did not mean for this to be about me...my world revolves around medication and health...

thank you both for thinking of me and being here for me even when you both have so much on your plate...

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @Sophia1. Thanks for your kind words. Yes, things are a bit out of control with me at present. You are right about a somewhat difficult period of adjustment after the big time down south. I hope your medications bring some balanced relief soon, and that you are not experiencing as much pain as you were. Recovery from surgery is a difficult time but so glad the surgery was a success and that there was no sign of anything more troubling health-wise. ox

Re: A long rave

@Sophia1 I did sleep on and off overnight, ended up getting a total of 9 hours because of a couple of extra naps this morning. Not sure what made you think I hadn't (not a problem, just curious).

Sorry to hear the doc has you changing meds at such a time already difficult. Hope you get some relief from pain and proper restful sleep soon.

I think you're amazing to be able to offer support to others at this time.

I imagine you have house inspections again this morning. I hope that goes well for you.

@eth Hi eth I hope you are doing okish with all this up coming NDIS sh1t. You know we will all be here cheering you on at the side lines 🙂 Remember if it all falls in a heap not to give up things always sort themselves out in the end. Adversity can be the making of people. Your brother and sil wont leave you stranded. You will be okay. You are a survivor. We wont leave you either. Even if I had left finally I would have come back for the verdict. Love always greenpea xx

Re: A long rave

good morning all @eth @Mazarita and all others

had more of a block of sleep last night...feeling the heaviness that follows...

we are all very weary ....dealing with issues that at times can feel insurmountable....

@eth I am not sure either where the idea of your not sleeping came from...this is partly why I do not wander too far...my mind is so very confused...the medications along with additions and subtractions are playing havoc with a mind that was already disocciated..

so apologies...I know that you said was not a problem..thank you..

I hope that the day finds some calm and tranquility for you both...

I overdid it yesterday and suffered greatly afternoon and evening..

will quietly make my way back to my haven at present..

thinking of you both...take care

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @eth and everyone,

Eth, how was your outing last night? I know you are going away today, wondering if you've already left to go.

I'm struggling with meds side effects in a big way, related to the higher increase in dose this week of the new mood stabiliser. Over the last couple of days I've developed a headache, feeling of pressure in my face and head, vague dizziness and nausea, bloodshot eyes, feeling distant from everything, very tired and falling asleep in the chair. Hope these pass soon because they are making me feel very unwell and strange. Hard to describe how strange I feel really.

Went to my friend's birthday celebration yesterday about midday. Stayed until 10pm last night. A bigger social occasion than I've been used to for a while, with about 8 fairly intense people all hanging out together. I was very quiet to the point of being like a stunned mullet most of the day and night. Side effects mentioned above with me all day. Still glad I was part of it but wasn't easy getting through it really. And I felt pretty stupid for being so quiet. Felt at a distance from everyone and couldn't muster the energy for much conversation. Mostly I just smiled wanly at people when they spoke to me.

No plans here today, just as well. I may end up asleep again soon, or the forum may wake me up a bit and keep me upright. But I'm not well enough for anything much really aside from surviving another day, while waiting for things to settle with the meds. Really feeling them in a big way at present.

Thanks to anyone reading this far. Needed a little rave to get that off my chest.

Sending good vibes to everyone, and better health than I'm experiencing just now. ox

Hi @Sophia1, I was drafting and posting my last one while you posted yours, so I missed you being here the first time around. I commiserate with what you are going through. My mind is pretty scrambled at the moment too. Sending gentle hugs and good vibes to you for getting through another day, closer to healing with the time that passes. ox

Re: A long rave

Hugs all around @Mazarita @Sophia1 @Bunniekins and thanks for the kind words. Very sorry to hear things are so challenging Maz and Sophia. Hope you feel better rested and refreshed today and with less pain. Was thinking of you all yesterday. Sophia I'd love to visit your flower garden It reminds me of the gardens at Roma St in Brisbane where I went with Mum a few years ago.

Good morning also to @CheerBear @Faith-and-Hope @frog @Appleblossom @Shaz51 @outlander @Former-Member @utopia @Teej and anyone else here today. Hoping today is one of the better ones.

The movie Breath was really well done - adapted from the book (by Tim Winton) well. I won't say more about it as some people might go see it. The dinner afterwards was totally yummy - arancini balls and 2 huge mezze platters that we all shared. I didn't talk a lot either but felt it wasn't a problem as sil had 2 of her closest friends there who I know I'm accepted by without judgment.

Then we just went to the farm for the afternoon yesterday, didn't stay for the cold overnight as sil is still fighting flu'. Luckily I haven't caught it this time. Taking immunity echinacaea, garlic, zinc and Vit C every morning and had my flu shot last week. I read a book most of the afternoon and just sat quietly through the early twilight listening to the birds as they tucked in for the night and the crickets as they woke up.

Looking forward to chats today. I have no plans yet except the ex bike and cooking tonight.
