A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

A rave. Not tagging anyone because, as always, when I post long, there's no need for anyone to read unless especially interested. It's mainly just a way of releasing, and making clearer in my mind, what's going on.

Haven't been on the forum as much lately. Not feeling as motivated for it, with the mood swings I've been experiencing. That's the thing with me sometimes: the more troubled I get, the less I am able to talk about it and the more distant from people I feel. In the worst year of my life I almost completely absented myself from the world and found it very hard to express what I was going through. Words just didn't seem to reach the depths of it.

Having said that, this is not the worst year of my life and I am okay. I have an appointment with my psychiatrist later today. I'd be more worried about myself if I didn't have that session with him. Sunday night was the end of the crossover period of changing from one med to another. I took the last of the old mood stabiliser then, and am now only on a sub-clinical dose of the new mood stabiliser. Not enough to keep me stable, it seems. I've been in a round of excitable all-nighters with creativity, followed by exhausted down days. That's something that happens with me at the best of times, but not as frequently as it has been of late and not as extreme in mood as lately. The depressed feelings have been particularly hard to take. Domestic duties have taken a dive. My bathroom is horrible.

Went to the public dental clinic yesterday after 18 months wait for an ongoing course of treatment. During that time there's just been a couple of emergency appointments when three teeth actually broke in half! The first appointment this time around was just a check up to see how my teeth are going. Now I have to wait another month to get to the next stage of the process and some actual treatment. I thought I needed five fillings but the dentist said it's more than that! They will get done eventually. That will be a good feeling when they're fixed.

Nothing much more to say for myself really, so I'll sign off here. Thanks for reading this far if you have.

Best to all here.

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @eth, @Shaz51, @outlander, @Former-Member and everyone,

That rave I posted above was in the middle of the night. Feeling a bit more positive this morning as I will be soon going to see my psychiatrist, around lunchtime today.

Also been thinking about @Sophia1 but not up to posting on other threads much. Sending best wishes for your ongoing recovery.

Hope it's a good day for all of us.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita @Shaz51 @outlander and others who are around this morning.

@Mazarita I'm sorry to hear your mood swings are so pronounced at the moment, tho I kind of figured they might be. Sounds like rapid cycling to me. Hoping your psychiatrist can help and tweak your meds to give you more balance. Here for you whenever you want, thinking of you when you're not around much.

@Shaz51 the Chronic Disease Health Care Plan enables you to get 5 appoinments with a choice of several types of specialist. Well worth talking to your Dr about it. Last year I used all 5 of mine for podiatry. This year I will use them for psychology.

@outlander I hope your hand is healing well and your appointment went well.

Re: A long rave

@eth, good to see you this morning. Thank you (again) for your kindness. How are you feeling this morning?

@Shaz51, further to what @eth said about the Chronic Disease Health Care Plan, I too have been given sessions with 'allied health professionals' via this scheme. At the moment I am getting five physiotherapy sessions. Previous years I have mixed it up with podiatry too.

Re: A long rave

Hey @Mazarita Pretty relaxed but unmotivated here this morning - as is the case most days. I'm getting more sleep (still in fits and bursts) lately but it's hard to get going in the a.m. Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better and looking forward to your appointment.

Hi @Teej How are you travelling these days? Good to see your like and know you are around.

Re: A long rave

Yes, tired mornings are the name of the game for us most days, it seems, @eth. I like though that being on the forum often wakes up my mind at least and then I can sometimes improve on it all from there. Has your bro returned yet? Good to hear you are getting better sleep, even if in short bursts.

Re: A long rave

The forum in the morning works that way for me too @Mazarita. Yes bro came home yesterday afternoon. He gave me a gorgeous tea tin, the outside looks like glossy bark and it has a bamboo scoop, inside it was a beautiful engraved silver bracelet which I'm wearing now. We had dinner together last night which was nice.

Re: A long rave

How wonderful, the gifts that bro brought home for you, @eth. Lovely too that you had dinner together again last night. It's at times like these that I feel it's such a blessing that you are there now and not up north. Though I know there are moments of 'not so great' too. Maybe that's just part of the flow of living with other humans. My friend is also getting used to living with her brother now.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita the relationships I have with bro and sil are probably the most 'adult and functional' that I've ever had. Unfortunately the relationship I have with my adult child has broken down somewhat recently, hopefully temporarily. It started with a phone call where they snapped at me once too often the day before my case conference. Which made me reflect on the whole dynamic. They don't ask me how I am. They have told me not to give clothes or toys to my grand daughter. They just want me to give cash and never use it for what it's intended. It's all about them - they are nearly 30 and old enough to treat me like any other adult - but repeatedly tell me what I can't talk about. They announce things on FB that they won't discuss - OK to tell the world but not me. So I've taken a step back since 2 weeks ago. I sent a message saying they had my number and could ring if they wanted to talk and let me talk too. It feels like a total contradiction to be treated this way when their whole life revolves on the principle of everyone having the right to be themself and be accepted. I'm having withdrawals and sads over no contact with my grand daughter. Rant over!!!
