A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Bunniekins, you and me both with having strong impulses to sleep at the moment. I was on track to sleep the day away today. Luckily my friend rang and woke me up, then came to pick me up and take me to her place. Haven't slept since then. Did you have a good day out shopping? Hope your meds can be tweaked soon. I think my sleepiness is a down after the scary high of being down south, as well as effects of changing meds.

Hi @CheerBear, thanks for thinking of me when out and about, as I do with you. The lemon tree sounds so lovely, and you sitting in freshly mown yard, good moments. I had a moment in my friend's back yard, standing beyond the patio checking out the blue of the sky, the hilly area all round, thick with trees. A little bird that I couldn't identify flew across at one point, so agile its flight. The house is opposite a big nature reserve.

Hi @eth, cafe and writers festival sounds cool. How was it? I was just too sleepy this morning to get on the forum. Then out until evening. Had a complete video day yesterday, a nap in between, but went on all through the evening with it. Got to bed about midnight though. I've finished this vid now, just waiting for the writer to get back about it. I realise as I write this that you may not get this until the morning. So sending good wishes for a better than average sleep tonight and a fresh wakening.

Hi @Sophia1, looking forward to hearing from you when you are able. Meanwhile, sending more good wishes to you.

Hi @Former-Member, not sure if you've been on the forum much over the past couple of days, except to maybe like posts. After I've posted this I'll go check to see if there's anything more from you. Thinking of you, whether you are actively here or not, and sending love.

Hi everyone, hope the rest of your evening is peaceful and kind.

Good morning @Mazarita @CheerBear @Bunniekins @Former-Member @outlander @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Appleblossom @Faith-and-Hope @frog @Phoenix_Rising and anyone else joining in here today.

Sorry to hear that you think you're on a down swing after the hype of your time away @Mazarita - it usually happens to me too. Try to be patient with yourself as you adjust to the new med too. Nothing wrong with a bit of extra sleep after the last three weeks in my humble opinion. Sounds like you've made good progress with the latest video despite how you're feeling - well done!

Yesterday was good - my brother made a really good host and interviewed an author about his book. I'd love to say more about it but it might be identifying him and thus me. It was about regenerative agriculture. Afterwards bro and sils friends and us spent some time in a cafe - it felt good to be part of their cohort. Most of them had a hangover from a late party the night before so it was entertaining conversation.

I'd had a late night too watching 3 episodes of Ice Cream Girls (content warning for sa) which was hard to turn off once I was caught up in it. Very engrossing even tho' it brought up some memories, the plot twist at the end tied things up well and I managed to sleep. Then slept again in the afternoon yesterday.

I've done my chores this morning and have no real plans for the rest of the day. Taking it easy after a night of chaotic dreams. I woke up driving a bus over the crest of a hill and falling down to earth. Luckily I woke before it hit the bottom. Several elements in the dream which clearly represent parts of my past. Quite disturbing stuff so I was glad to wake up.

Also being as gentle as possible with the AAT case conference this week. Night before last I had a really strong feeling of being totally boxed in by my past. With no doors or windows in the box. The feeling has come back several times since.

Re: A long rave

@MazaritaTake it easy Bella. Its been huge for you to be so social and travelling. Think of it more as spiritual quiet and calm for your soul, than worrying about pathology. Remember you never used to even leave your flat. So good to still be able to chat with you.

@ethSounds like a lot of good work is being done in your family. Keep the faith.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita Dear Maz it is scary how a change of routine and meds can do this. I haven't even done what you have achieved down south (which was extraordinary I think) and yet am exhausted. Plus the changing of medications that you are doing.... and yet I am so tired .... you are right when I see my new pdoc on Wednesday I will talk to her then about it then.

Yes I had a great couple of hours out shopping with the kidults managed the shops okay and watched my favourite Father Brown and Midsommer Murders yesterday both of which I really enjoyed. Simple pleasures. Even snuck in a walk with my son later for 30 mins in the blazing heat! Will wait till it cools off before I do that again.

Wishing you a calm and 'pea'ceful day again 🙂 xx

Re: A long rave

@eth Hi eth am so happy that you had a gret day yesterday. Sounds like a perfect way to spend a Sunday :D. I took the kidults out for a couple of hours which was nice and then with the heat came promptly back home. Going to be another scorcher today so went out quickly and am now safely back inside.

Will be thinking of you this week. Deep breaths and lots of self care. Love gp xxx

Re: A long rave

Hi everyone

@eth, so great to hear about you out at cultural events and feeling good in social situations. Entertaining conversation I like! I understand that relief after waking from chaotic dreams. My dreams the night before had me feeling highly anxious, insecure, unwanted. Your feeling of being boxed in with no windows or exits seems directly related to the AAT. I hope the windows and doors will appear again clearly when the process is resolved. Sending strength, resolve and trust in you.

@Appleblossom, thanks for your soothing words. I love it that you are around still too, Apple, and that we continue to meet and like and chat in an ongoing way. Hope your GP appointment goes well today.

@Bunniekins, pea'ce to you too. You do sound very tired and I'm glad that the Pdoc's appointment is so soon. Great that the shopping trip went well and that you got enjoy some of your shows. Blazing heat walk was brave. I haven't had much of a walk for a while. Another thing I've let slide today. But tomorrow I'll be out at a GP appointment, that will get me moving again.

@outlander, @CheerBear, @Former-Member and everyone, may the rest of your day bring moments of wellbeing.

@eth

I have had many nightmarish dreams, this year though often in the morning! I seem to need that extra rest, the dreaming kicks in and then I get up. At least these days I have relaxing life with few family commitments so I can usually take the dream in my stride and reflect a bit about it. I am treating it as at least now I have luxury of being able to do my dream work. Ie my subconscious is able to process all the things that kept happening again and again, which I simply had to ignore to face up to the parenting stuff. You know what that is like! I am not seeing it as a down turn, but that at last I have time for it. Anyway that is from studying Freud/Jung in my 20s ... I had no memory of dreams for a long time, was not sure if I had them.
