A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth and everyone, I'll probably be having an early night tonight. Was up all night until 6am and have only slept in snatches a couple of times today. Consequently, low energy day, with restlessness from boredom and not having the energy to leave the flat. Couldn't even manage the short walk I wanted to do.

I've been reading a fair bit about bipolar 1 since recently having that diagnosis clarified. Some of what I've read has deepened my understanding of why so much emphasis is placed on getting sleep patterns in order. This is something I have only managed to partially improve, with fairly regular breakouts still into middle of the night wakefulness and mental stimulation on the computer. Still, it's better that I'm not up all night every night, which is how I lived for many many years of my life.

But it does make me feel all the more that I want to improve this, for my wellbeing now and, perhaps even more, to minimise the damaging effects of this serious mental health disorder as I'm further aging. The more stable and functional I can be, the less the likelihood of further damaging cognition, for example, as time goes by. This is something I was reading about in articles about bipolar as we are aging.

Woops, I've been raving again.

Hope today has had some good moments for everyone.

Re: A long rave

@eth, was up all night last night and today was recovering from that, sleeping in a couple of blocks, the rest of the time very low energy. An indoors day with some computing, more doing nothing much at all to be honest. How was yours?

Re: A long rave

I had the same physical problem happen again so my day was pretty awful. I've slept most of the time since before 8pm @Mazarita. Was just so drained from the extreme physical discomfort all day Seeing Dr Tuesday about it and other stuff..

Re: A long rave

So glad you are seeing your doctor on Tuesday about this, @eth. Sounds horrible. Is there anything that brings it on?

I have an appointment tomorrow that will get me out of the flat, thank goodness. It's to meet a friend for coffee that I haven't seen for going on two months, looking forward to it. I am hoping I won't stay awake for too long tonight so I don't have such trouble getting going in the morning.

Re: A long rave

This might be over-sharing but here goes anyway @Mazarita

2 of my bipolar meds have constipation side effects. I've taken them separately before and never had a problem. But taking the 2 together seems to be the trigger for all this. It's extreme and when I finally do get relief (with help of a chemist med.) it's scary. I do believe I partially prolapsed last weekend and am fearful of certain possible consequences. I once worked for a colo-rectal surgeon so I've a fair idea of what can happen It makes it impossible to do anything but stand for hours, very hard to do when legs feel so weak and head is wobbly from meds. ..... too much information?!

Hope you make it to your coffee ap't. Sounds nice.

Re: A long rave

@eth, this is the place to share about all the details of what we are going through. I find it refreshing when people are honest and specific about what they are going through, mental or physical, it all blends. I really sympathise with you about this problem. It does sound alarming and I would be concerned too.

I have been having a bit of extra trouble with my guts in that region for about the past six weeks. Pain every day from it, and too many toilet trips. Not as extreme as you are describing though. I have Crohns affecting that area. I worry about it as I age.

Re: A long rave

Are you able to manage Crohn's at all with diet @Mazarita? I remembered yesterday to eat porridge (oats) and fruit (strawberries and banana) and that seemed to be what helped. It was quite a few hours since I had taken the chemist med.

Do you avoid certain foods? Eat more of ones that are good for the problem? I am interested as I've studied nutrition, allbeit many years ago.

Re: A long rave

My eating habits have always been very erratic, @eth. I'm very fussy about foods and tend to eat on impulse as a result. Improving this has proven massively difficult for me over time as I really don't cook and am incapable at this time in terms of supermarket shopping. So I rely on C and what he cooks. He's the kindest person to look after me on this level for such a long time, but he is not that into cooking either.

Having said all that, the times when I have made a short-lived and massive effort to try to improve this have made no difference to the symptoms. As far as I'm aware, diet can really only make a difference to active inflammation, which I don't really have. It's structural problems that affect me most of all at this stage (tissue hardening and narrowing of the tract especially at the bottom end.
