A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Morning @Mazarita and all ☺

Our day started hours ago, long before the birds woke up Maz. This change in daylight savings time is not ideal when one of the biggest sleep issues I have is early waking, regardless of what time I go to bed. Today was made extra loud from earlier than usual as the kids woke ready for egg hunting. It's going to be a long day.

One of my favourite things to do on this Sunday each year is re-hide hunting eggs while they're off looking for them. We have a share bowl in the middle of the table that they drop their finds into and as they run off looking for more, I walk behind them quietly hiding a few here and there, often where they had just found them. It takes them so long to click 😆

Hoping today is a nice one or has nice moments in it, for you and all.

Big ones of these ❤ to anyone who'd like them 😊

Good morning @Mazarita @outlander @Appleblossom @CheerBear @Phoenix_Rising @Bunniekins @Former-Member and anyone else around this morning. Hoping everyone had happy times yesterday - Easter, Ostara whatever you celebrate - even if it's just a holiday. My adult(?) child calls it Zombie Day because Jesus is said to have risen from the dead!

Hot cross buns and chocolate bunnies here even though we're not practicing Christians, more pagan really, but without any labels. And a trip to the beach in the afternoon. It was beautiful, as it always is here.

I've a lot to catch up on and will be around for a while if anyone wants to chat.

s to all x

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, @Former-Member and everyone,

Awake again and hopefully I'll stay awake today, after a couple of the usual wake breaks in the night. Went to bed about 10.30pm. Good stuff when I get to bed before midnight, the pumpkin hour as Niqua calls it.

Finally unpacked my suitcase from travelling! And did two loads of washing. First beach walk since returning from down south, including short dip and splash around in the ocean. Showered when I returned home. Bed made. All good.

Today no plans. Getting a bit bored around the edges this easter, partly why I went to bed early last night. Felt depressed. Better this morning for the 'reboot' after sleep.

So glad to hear your day was enjoyable yesterday, @eth. Yes, pagan without a label, that's about me too.

A kind and enjoyable Easter Monday to all.

Re: A long rave

@eth Hi eth your Easter Sunday sounds perfect. Zombie day rings very true to me in many ways lol ... anyways ... I had a lovely lunch come early dinner with my ex and we spoke about many things affecting my son and my daughter. He is a great guy and now a good friend. Perfect relationship which I do not want to spoil even though it got a bit heated in a nice way towards the end of the lunch ..... let's put it this way he is very bad .... anyway today I will spend a quiet day at home and the kidults are all here with me.

Watching Bold and the Beautiful this afternoon. Ahh the simplte pleasures.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita great to hear you managed to get good sleep overnight for a change. And that you got so much done yesterday. I gave my bro a massage - first time I've had the massage table up in nearly 18 months. Had to dig it out from under the bed! Felt like a milestone. There's not much point having the knowledge if I can't at least help family and friends. And I always try to say yes if I'm asked to do it by one of them.

No plans here today either. Sil just came to check on me as she often does in the mornings and we ended up having a talk about me trying to schedule a regular shower. It's the first time I've been able not to cry when it's mentioned. I do want to do it but manage to avoid it for long periods of time, just top and tailing in the cabin.

I'll cook for us all tonight, that's my only plan for today. It's been great to have a break from all the NDIS stuff for a few days.

Transitioning with the end of day light savings has more of an effect than makes sense - it's only 1 hour but means a longer morning and adjusting the time I take meds at both ends of the day. Hopefully it won't take too long to adjust.

@Bunniekins we posted at the same time. Sounds like yesterday was really positive for you and today promises to be too.

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @Bunniekins, sounds like you had a good zombie day too, with a bit of spice added as well as some good parental talk. I find it so great that you can be friends with your ex. B&B is my close friend's favourite show too. I used to be addicted to the soaps, 'Another World' and 'Melrose Place' decades ago. I just watched a few odd shows and got addicted to the plots and characters.

@eth, giving a massage is a wonderful thing to do. Do you find that you benefit from the healing process too? Good on you for not giving way to tears when sil did the talk about showering. I would find that a bit oppressive, though I know it would be well intentioned. Cooking again sounds like another wonderful gift to your bro and sil, and an enjoyable group moment to look forward to. So much easier now that I don't have to factor in daylight savings in other states. Feels like our real time chats are now really 'real time'.
