A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Thanks for the tags earlier today, @eth, @Bunniekins, @Sophia1, @Former-Member. Hi @Silenus, @Appleblossom and everyone I'm not up to tagging just at this time. Hope the day is treating you all as well as possible.

Just woke up from a nap. Saw psychiatrist earlier in the day. Major change of medication will begin on Monday, going from one mood stabiliser to another. This is to minimise the weight gain side effect that has affected my life in a big way over the past eight years. Not looking forward to the possible rocky ride with a big change of meds. But staying as optimistic as possible that the new med (not known for weight gain) will help as much, if not more, than the one I was on.

Aside from that I'm still sleeping a lot, still recovering from the big trip down south. Good to be back within easier reach of the forum again though. And glad to be able to keep up a bit more with what's happening for people here.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita Hi Maz yes when I see my new pdoc going on new meds will be the first thing I will bring up with her. Makes you wonder why they put you on a fat making med in the first place knowing it will more than likelly make you depressed and I am depressed.

If she says no then I dont know what I will do ... well I do but I wont mention it here ... It doesnt surprise me that you are still sleeping alot. What you did was huge even for someone with out your mi etc. so kudos to you for doing it all and coming out the other end in one piece 😄 xxx

Re: A long rave

Hey @Shaz51, thanks for the good wishes on the med change. The one I'm changing from seems to also be causing some liver deterioration too, so another good reason to get off it at this point. How are you and Mr Shaz going today?

Hey @Bunniekins, wishing you the very best of luck with the new psychiatrist and the discussion of different meds. Perhaps you should tell her what you are not telling us (though I think I have an inkling), just to make it clear you are not happy the way things are.

I can see some reasons why I was put on the fat-stacking med I was given all those years ago. I was in a pretty manic state then and the one I am changing to now acts more on depression than the highs, which is appropriate now in a way it wasn't then. Despite the weight gain, I have found the med to be a life saver in other ways. Medications are tricky things to prescribe well. There's usually a downside of some kind as well as the help we get. I'm really sorry to hear you are feeling depressed about weight though.

Thanks for the kudos for surviving the ride down south. Yes, still in one piece.

Re: A long rave

that is a good reason to change your meds too @Mazarita

Tired today my scotirish sister , have a few appt for mr shaz coming up and we had one this morning 60kms away and then 60kms back home in the heavy rain which is caused by the coming cyclone which we are hoping it goes away -- and it was the wrong appt

work out ok , not according to mr shaz but it was in regard to mr shaz having kidney and gallstones and they sent a lettter to the specialist 3 years ago , which the appt was today

he is have suncancers cut out on Monday , and then blood tests and gallbladder scans

Despite the weight gain, I have found the med to be a life saver in other ways. -- same here @Mazarita, @Bunniekins with me withmy CKD and my husband`s MI

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita Thanks for explaining about the meds that makes sense now as I was the same re manic and not depressed. Now I am depressed lolz ... anyways enough about me. More about you did the audience throw any fruit at the presentations? I was so hoping that they didnt but when you told me they did once I was nervous for you.

Re: A long rave

@Shaz51 Poor mr shaz gallstones are dreadful my ex had them and they are not fun at all. He got very sick and had to have them out .... get them out asap is my advice .... I suppose what I am nervous about with weight gain are complications like diabetes, cancer etc.

Re: A long rave

@Shaz51, ah the rounds of medical appointments never seem to end as we are getting older, my sister. Especially with chronic health conditions too. I'm always amazed at how far you drive to get to appointments. You do so much for one with difficult health.

@Bunniekins, I think medication changes from time to time, and small tweaks depending on how we are going, are a necessary part of the treatment too. Mostly I think a good psychiatrist aims for stability of medications, to minimise the rockiness that happens with changes. And also as few medications as possible to deal with symptoms.

There was no fruit thrown at the screen, thank goodness! That happened in Sydney, which I've found is a tougher crowd in the past. As I've mentioned to you, what I do is experimental so not to everyone's taste by any means. There were a few people who left the screening early (just to balance out the 'masterpiece' comment, lol). But I tried not to let it faze me too much. I'd rather they did that than get really vocal about not liking what they are saying. Like I said earlier, I generally like the approach of 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all', lol. What an old fuddy duddy, eh?

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita re: 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all', I couldnt agree with you more . Oh those Sydney scallywags getting up to all kinds of mischief .... was probably would be contestants who's work sucked so much it wasnt shown.

And yes Shaz51 is a star mr shaz is so lucky to have mrs shaz 🙂
