A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Morning @outlander 👋

@eth My dog is the same on a lead but he’s also agressive with other dogs if they come near us. He is great off lead though and will happily heel and walk behind my left foot. I don’t need the lead for him even crossing main roads but I need to avoid dogs so walking in the streets or busy places doesn’t work. The park is 266 hectares so it’s easy to avoid others, but there are lots of brown snakes too so it’s a bit awkward in summer, but awesome in winter.

I hope you are enjoying your time alone. I’d imagine there are mixed emotions with it. It’s good you have a carefree day. I have too. I’m going to head off now and try to do some things but hopefully catch up again soon.

Best wishes. 💜🤗

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @Teej, @Faith-and-Hope, @eth, @outlander, @Former-Member and everyone,

Slow, tired start to this day. Still tired and slow but thought I'd come on here to try to wake up my mind. I have cleaning to do today but very low energy and motivation just now. I'll probably head over to the 'Daily Goals' thread soon to write myself a list of things I hope to do today. That will probably help get me going too.

Niqua, love your new diary thread and looking forward to following whenever you post there.

Faith, cool that that you are settling in a bit in the new place, and still smiling inside about your son getting into the diploma course.

Outlander, hope today is a good one for you and that you might even have some developments with the search for a new psychologist.

Eth, glad to hear you had time to do some grounding exercises with psychologist yesterday. It sounds like you are in a better state today than this time last week.

Teej, I too find getting out of the flat helpful to my tendency to overthink everything (says she who hasn't left the flat for days, hehe). Not keen on the idea of brown snakes where you take the dog for a walk!

Mainly just wanted to say hi to everyone and wish you all a good day from here on in.

Re: A long rave

Thanks, Niqua. Fact is I've got to get myself going today as it's the last cleaning day before inspection day tomorrow. I've already posted a list to the 'Daily Goals' thread and will slowly start to pick off the items, hopefully to get them all done by end of day. Otherwise I'll be up at 6am cleaning like a madwoman before agent turns up about 8.30. Early morning mad cleaning on the day is what normally happens anyway.

Hope your day pans out well, Niqua. A stream of love to you too. @Former-Member

Re: A long rave

hello @eth @Mazarita @Teej @Faith-and-Hope @outlander

no need to apologise to me eth...just my state of mind...you should see how confused I am in real life...there is just too much flying at me from all directions...I think that all of us here know that feeling..

I went to the physiotherapist re lower back issue which I assumed was pulled hamstring...wrong

of course not that simple.....

in october last year on the long weekend my husband and I went away to celebrate wedding anniversary...stayed at motel on outskirts of city and close to areas where there are nice eating places...streets with lovely shops ...ambience...blah blah..

motel we stayed at was not the cleanest...had to come home early...I came down with that dreaded flu that lasted about 5 weeks....following day husband had also....during one of the nights back at home I slept in spare room as had raging temperature changes and felt blech...did not want to keep each other awake..

I took my ad and sleeping tablet which normally gives me weird dreams...I was in a half awake state and delirious...I could not work out where I was...trying to get to the bathroom.. on the floor feeling for anything familiar...ended up entangling myself in clothes horse stored in corner....at least half a dozen times I grabbed onto it to pull myself up and get out of it only to fall hard back onto the carpet...

resulting in sore bump and very bad bruising on buttocks..

showed gp about 8 weeks later whilst seeing her re heart specialist request for more bloods blah blah..she said soft ..just inflammation..bruising will go..all ok.

I told physio about that and now is sore there...investigated...pushing to find painful spots...asked if referred for a scan...answered no...he frowned...did your gp say go back later to review...answer no..

he wanted to then refer me for a scan..well I am over testing having had ctca and mri and accidental pick up of what is believed to be benign tumour...so I said no more scans.

he is going to give me a couple of treatments of ultrasound...has given me two stretch exercises..then show me more to do in gym..rehab area..I will also attempt to get to pool...all before surgery on thoracic area whenever that will be...in the lap of the gods apparently..

so I am totally over medical people....this was my new gp with whom I connected and trusted after not being happy with attitude of so many others...apparently another 3 have left my clinic so they are escaping...

what I assumed was hamstring is sciatic nerve..

up until now and including yesterday I have every faith in this young male physiotherapist who also practices from a holistic manner...he even explained in medical terms in great detail what the neurosurgeon will be doing and how what I need to worry about is that he is very successful and knows exactly what he is doing...to forget his manner..

as teej mentioned you certainly have a great setup with your psychiatrist and psychologist...don't let them leave town..

when I was first diagnosed with ptsd which my psychiatrist now refers to as chronic trauma so different to yours...the psychologist I saw did the test with the rapid eye movement...she stopped proceeding as I could not even register what she was asking me to do..

you have found someone who clearly listens to you and is on track which is invaluable...a lot of money to be paying

I do hope that things come together with the ridiculous new system...NDIS..that in itself is so unfriendly..initialism I loathe!

enjoy your time home alone with the dog..pottering...think of it as a little holiday as ridiculous as it sounds...as you have the place to yourself and are also protected with the dog...

@Teej

havent spokent to you much lately...know that there are others who are which makes me feel better..

leaving appointments with so many questions is actually a good sign...as silly as that sounds..

write them all down...as they are important...they are what surfaced as a result of whatever was discussed during that session...take the questions along to your next visit...

you can if it does not trigger or make you anxious..make some notes next to each or some of what is the first thing that comes to mind....then let it go from your thoughts..to be shown and discussed at next session...

good luck ...you are moving through this and at your own pace which is vital...I wish you all the best xx

@Mazarita all of that cleaning ...reminds me of when we have inspection by appointment visit here...

the people are only there for such a short time...the preparation and cleaning wasting so many precious hours of our lives where we could be lazing around doing nothing in my case lately due to no energy motivation or interest...

you have been out and about a lot so your medications does seem to be improving things and then it becomes a chain reaction...out of the house...not isolating...smiling at people...talking to people...all normal things which we do not have when we isolate...nearly there ...."I" day I like that..whoever said that..

I = inspection

I= for me

I = I achieved

I = I am...I can...I will.

batting for you all with all of your struggles....

Re: A long rave

Hi @Former-Member I was a massage therapist for 28odd years. For sciatica the specific stretch is straight leg raising (you can do it up a wall if necessary - lie on your back with your hips at the base of the wall and extend your heels up the wall). I hope your physiotherapist is qualified enough to be describing what the surgeon will do. Sorry to hear you've been in pain for so long. AMTA is the association of massage therapists who are in the yellow pages and can recommend a properly qualified massage therapist if you're interested. If you do, make sure they take a full history including the diagnosis of what's happening in your thoracic region so they know what is contraindicated. Ultrasound from the physio sounds good and appropriate. You could ask them if they can do 'PNF stretches', proprioceptive neuromuscular facillitation, they are fantastic for sciatica relief.

My psych diagnosis of complex PTSD is also from chronic trauma. I also have bipolar 1 and they impact on each other.

What did you mean by 'initialism' in reference to the NDIS?

In response to: Re: A long rave

Re: A long rave

@eth

thank you for your reply..

I do seem to be getting everything upside down and thankfully I don't think that you have the personality to be easily offended.

you certainly are qualified to discuss massage...again if only I lived around the corner...how many of us on here have written this to another...many...

he has been practising physiotherapy for quite some time and also has skills in acupuncture...I mentioned the holistic side because I relate to this and that is why I feel so comfortable with him.

I told him ages ago about my mental illness and how despite my being very fit for my age and very active when well...this activity comes to a standstill with isolation...to the point that I was not even going out of the house other than absolutely necessary...vital appointments...ran out of food...vet...outings with husband.. I explained all of this so that he would understand why someone like myself can suddenly have an injury due to my frenetic mind telling me oh I have to get my fitness back which of course helps my mental health...one big merrygoround as you would be very aware as with Mazarita..not sure about others here..sorry...

I strongly believe that the mind and body are interconnected and cannot work on their own..therefore when one is affected eventually symptoms will appear in the other...this is how he thinks also...

he also always explains what he is doing to which part why and prognosis which for me who asks a thousand questions is a blessing...

he has been so patient with me where so many have failed and I feel faith in his diagnosing and treatment..

he also is a qualified masseur..

he is head of that area as well as most physiotherapy...pilates and gym rehab area of the clinic..

he has given me two stretch exercises which I will see the outcome of pain relief or exacerbation..

I will ask about up the wall...not sure if I am at that level yet...I will also mention PNF stretches.. much appreciated...

I did not mean that my trauma was worse as it was chronic as opposed to PTSD. psychologist diagnosed PTSD..psychiatrist whom I went back to after seeing psychologist for over 18 months and not improving said for me not PTSD ..chronic trauma...the term chronic implying long term and more than one occasion..

having bipolar 1 with chronic trauma ...I am astounded at how well you manage ...you sound so gentle and grounded the same as Mazarita..

NDIS the title now used sounds like some contagious disease to me....the government have not got a clue when they come up with these new names....initialisam is a name made up purely from initials as opposed to an acronym which most corporations use as their every day language..

in the state that I live in there are advocates for those with disabilities which can also include mental illness...who will accompany you...complete forms with you..or even represent you on their own if you are not well enough...is this something that you have in place?

In response to: Re: A long rave

Re: A long rave

Sounds like you're in good hands @Former-Member. I'm not always grounded by any means but I guess coming on here helps me 'seem'!! I do have a disability advocate and now also a legal aid solicitor. There's more about my NDIS journey on my thread 'Anyone started with the NDIS?'

p.s. doing the stretch up the wall is easier than without, both on your abdominals and because you're not lifting the leg against gravity. Hope this makes sense.

@Mazarita I hope your day hasn't been too hectic and by now you are feeling good about the state of the flat. I've been known to shove piles into cupboards to get through inspections! On the other hand I've been known to be down on my knees cleaning door and window runners with a toothbrush when the stress has pushed me into hypomanic OCD!! Hoping you've found a happy medium of effort.
