A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

hello @eth

I read about your allotted time being reduced by travelling....outrageous..

are you aware of the medicare funded psychology appointment per 12 months.....

if not your gp will be aware and complete an assessment form...make a double appointment to see your gp..

emphasise that you need to see someone who can assist with chronic trauma ..complex PTSD..

if you have been down this avenue before..

you may be eligible again if more than 12 months ago...ask for a different psychologist if not happy...if you are computer savvy you can do some research on how to locate closest psychologist....psychologists who specialise in complex ptsd..

if you have already been down this track...still go and talk to your gp...if you cannot relate to your gp ...find another one...

I have been through all of this myself over a 3-4 year period....I might be very unwell but I am tenacious..

also if you have concerns about getting to the appointment....research under mental health australia...give the general line a call....keep on asking..

local community might have volunteers....I do understand that you need to feel comfortable..if you are able to drive the volunteer could accompany you...

let me know if you have done all of this already.....please know that I do not feel that I know all of the answers and that it is a simple task by any means...

all of this might sound very daunting and can be draining ...I experienced this....my anxiety rose and then I would give myself a rest from it...

tiny steps by yourself with helping hands who have empathy..they are out there...we just have to find them...if you lived near me...I would be over there in a shot..

Re: A long rave

Hi @Former-Member, I think it was a simple mixup of @eth with @outlander, who is looking for a new psychologist. Outlander might find that information useful.

Hi @outlander, thanks for your good morning greetings. I like them even if I don't get to them until the afternoon, like today. I'm going okay today. It was exciting having my friend stay last night. She only just left a little while ago. Best wishes on finding a good psychologist.

Hi @eth, I don't think you missed me by much last night. Got to sleep around 3.30 Qld time. Slept more solidly than usual after that until about 9.30, when my friend and I both seemed to wake spontaneously at the same time. Hope your psychologist session is easier on you this time around.

Hi @Former-Member. Hope you slept well and feel refreshed and less tired than yesterday. Hope the mowing feels rewarding once it's done. Look forward to chatting more later.

My friend was so exhausted from flying interstate and doing much more walking than usual, and just the usual inconveniences of travelling for someone with mobility problems and a lot of pain and illness. I was worried about her driving home to her sister's in that state. So offered her my bed for the night. She slept really well and was much better this morning to leave about half an hour ago. It was so great having her here. We really miss each other (a lot) since she moved out from living just a few streets away. Her sister is now thinking of investing in a flat that my friend would pay rent/mortgage payments on. That would be an awesome solution to her housing problem if it comes off. So looking more optimistic there for her, which makes me feel happier too.

I'm skipping art group today as I didn't want to rush. I've been getting a bit elevated and overwired and rushing around makes it worse. Slowing down makes it better. So an easyish day for me, I've decided. I may get some more jobs around the flat done for the flat inspection. Okay if I don't. There's not that much to do now really.

Hope the day goes well for everyone.

Good morning, @CheerBear, wonder if you are up and around yet today. Haven't chatted at this first light time for a while and especially thinking of you this lovely morning. Sending good vibes to you and everyone for this day.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita ☺ I am up and about and you gave me a big smile with this message thanks. Most mornings I have sat in the same spot as I do with my coffee and said a quiet good morning to you in my head as I haven't been here as much in the early hours for the last little while. It's funny how often I look up at the morning sky and want to share it with you.

How are you going this morning? Any plans for your day?

Re: A long rave

@CheerBear, big smile from me too that you are online and responding.

I've woken up with a complaining gut this morning, but have taken some medication for it and think it will improve over the day.

Aside from that, the slight breeze is wonderfully cool coming through the open glass doors and easing all ills for now too.

Today is my last day of cleaning before the flat inspection tomorrow. How is your kitchen looking at this stage. Is it basically workable now?

Any plans?

Re: A long rave

Oh bummer with the gut upset @Mazarita. Hope it improves for you soon. Shudder with the house inspection! Have you got much to do for that today?

Our kitchen is in the same state as it was - missing a good chunk of it and I am yet to hear anymore about it. It makes it seriously challenging to use the space and difficult to feel ok about being here, as I think you'd be able to imagine. Something else that was fixed has been fixed in a way that has made it break again also, which tends to happen here. Big sigh.

Plan today for me is a meeting at school and then some housework, so it's a quiet day which will be good.

Our morning sky here has speckles of pinks and blues in lots of different shapes. It's so pretty and interesting!

Going to be a fleeting catch up this morning as I have to get a move on with the morning run now. Even briefly catching you has been lovely. Thank you 💗

Good luck with the housework and might catch you later x

(And a hi to those who might come past here over the course of the morning also 👋💕)

Re: A long rave

Somehow missed your last message for a little while, @CheerBear. Sometimes notifications seem slow these days. Sorry your house has some extra challenges at the moment. Glad to hear you will be getting a quiet day with just some housework in it. I think mine will be fairly quiet too as I've got a lot of the flat cleaned now. Tomorrow early morning will probably be my last minute stress out time, just before the inspection happens. But I expect it will go okay, as it has for the past almost four years now. Enjoy the day as much as possible. So good to chat with you of a morning.

Hi @frog, noticed that you are around this morning too. Haven't chatted for a little while. How are you this morning?

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita, Claire @outlander, @eth , @Faith-and-Hope , @Shaz51 , @CheerBear , @Former-Member . and Everyone 🙂

I slept quiet well last night, though I was pushing Pumpkin hour again 😉 I didn't even want to watch a DVD last night, just played mindless games, but did get tired and slept 🙂

Haven't touched the mower yet - . . . can't rush these things 😉 But I got the rubbish, a bit of dirty clothes & the little fella's feet done yesterday 🙂 & we went to a favourite 'look-out' spot for a walk 🙂

How wonderful that your friend came to visit {does this mean again, only this time she stayed the night!} Is her Sister thinking of taking a flat in your area?

Shame about the Art group, but nobody knows you like you & a bit like my mower which is still sitting in the shed, your Art group will still be waiting when your ready 🙂

That flat of yours must be a bit hard on the eyes . . . all the brilliant sparkling going on 😄 🙂 D day is nearly over, or should I call it 'I' day, 'I' for inspection and for the 'eyes' scrutinizing every crack and corner! 😄

I hope your still feeling the benifits of the new medication working to help you Mazy & that it helps you smile more each day 🙂

Love to you Mazy

and anyone that needs it

Niqua

(P.S. I've started a new thread, I'm thinking of using it like a journal {you put that idea in my head Maz:)}, it's called Niquas Notes)
