A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @eth, @Faith-and-Hope, @Former-Member, @Shaz51, @Former-Member, @Bunniekins and everyone,

Eth, looking forward to hearing about your trip to the farm later.

Faith, hope you are surviving the heat okay.

Niqua, lovely greetings from you, who are magical to see the magic in me. Will respond more to your longer post later.

Shaz, almost caught each other in the night. I think it was about 45 minutes later I got your message. Lovely that you were able to text with your almost grandaughter. How sweet to get a thank you in the morning.

Mohill, thinking of you every day. Sending love, calm and peaceful moments in the midst of the difficulties.

Greenpea, have missed chatting with you the past couple of days. Just checking in that all is okay.

I'm about to get ready for my big day. Sending good vibes to everyone passing by here.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita hoping your day goes according to plan and you feel good about it with maybe some goodies from op shopping.

My time at the farm was weird this time. By the time we arrived there were at least 40 people, mostly families with youngsters. I had known it was to be a birthday party with lots of gaming but I was completely overwhelmed by the crowd. So I was a fringe dweller that night and quite emotional a few times. I spoke to one person about it and she was very supportive. I drank a little more than usual and went to bed early. Then felt on the outer the next morning too so I got a lift back in the morning from her instead of staying all day with bro and sil. It's the most overwhelmed socially I've felt for a long time. Probably contributed to by the emotions I've been feeling since Wednesday last week. I feel a bit stuck in that stuff still and no motivation today.

I should be going over my NDIS goals and functional impacts before the meeting tomorrow with Disability Advocate and legal aid lawyer for my side who I haven't met before. NDIS has not done what their solicitor said she'd do by Dec 22nd.

It'd be easy to rant about that but wouldn't serve any purpose.

Hoping all here get through today smoothly and peacefully.

Re: A long rave

@Former-Member, thanks for replying, though I know it is probably quite difficult to engage with the forum at the moment. Healing wishes to you.

@eth, that is a fairly big crowd. I felt a bit similar with the poetry event and how many people were there last time too (and came home early that night as well). I'm glad you found someone supportive, who could also bring you home a bit early. It's great that you went out of your comfort zone with so many people. Nothing wrong with returning home early when it was getting too much. Sending good wishes that you may find some energy for your NDIS work. Deep breaths and into it if you can. Hugs for the feelings from last Wednesday that are still with you. I hope your next psychologist appointment is soon so that you can process it there, with her help. Off out for the day in a few moments. Hope to catch up again later.

Thanks @Mazarita and @Former-Member. Thinking of you with yours too @Former-Member

I'm sick and tired of feeling like a stunned mullet, even here at times.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, back at home recovering from the heat of the morning. We met at the centre and then went op shopping together. It's another hot and humid one and I'm still sweating and red even though I have the aircon on. But it was enjoyable meeting the other women (there were only four of us including facilitator). I bought a shirt for C and went to the chemist afterwards for some supplies. Will set off on my second, much bigger journey of the day in about half an hour or so.

Sorry you are feeling like a stunned mullet, sometimes even on the forum. I think it's totally okay to go through different phases with things here. I've gone through may too, including about nine months away when I couldn't handle the forum at all.

Perhaps speaking to your psychiatrist about med dosages? It seems like you were a bit elevated a while back but that there has been a depression cloud over you for a while since. I wonder if there's any way of finding a better medium between the two, via different medication doses?

In any case, I hope the rest of the day treats you well. Here for a little chat for a while longer if you feel like it. ox

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita Hi Maz yesterday sounds like it was a perfect day for you. A walk then a swim in the ocean how fabulous. I spent the day out with my son and daughter which was really nice ... we also went for a walk before it got to hot. My son bought himself some treats and then came back hom to stay in the cool. Oh for a little bit of rain ... just over night would be so nice.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Bunniekins, I'm never sure whether to tag someone when they haven't been around for a bit. Just checking in that you are okay. I see you are still grinning, great!

Sounds nice spending time with your son and daughter, and going for a walk (especially before it got too hot). We had some rain last night and today. But it hasn't lasted long, and then turns into humidity.

The beach walk and dip yesterday were good. It's surprising how exercised I feel after just a bit of a dip, with the waves rolling in against me. It was much more invigorating than just a walk.

Just got home from a three and a half hour round trip on public transport today to a craft shop that is going to do a sewing job for me. It was the only place I could find to do it, hence the long travel to get there. Lots of walking in the heat and sun too, was streaming with sweat and very red. But the public transport had aircon, so that helped.

Bit of a rave on returning home! Hope today is treating you well.
