A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

And at least I have the blessing of air conditioning.

Re: A long rave

Another one sneaking quietly by very thankful for having airconditioning. It is really hot outside today, but not as humid as expected at least.

Great to hear about your beach walk and dip @Mazarita! That would feel really good. Happy for you that today is better than yesterday.

Awesome to hear you're getting out too @frog 🙂 Hope that cool change comes sooner than Feb :S

Glad you're having a restful sounding day @Faith-and-Hope 🙂

I've managed to get quite a lot done today. The house needs a vacuum and mop but aside from that it's pretty owner-ready which has settled some anxiety. I've even managed washing (not folding and putting away yet). I have "breathe, smile, repeat" written on my hand. It's a new cool trick which in itself makes me feel good. Next step is working out some kind of dinner that doesn't require too much kitchen or water and get to the shop, but I'm giving myself a cuppa break before I do that one.

Hope the afternoon goes well for all 🙂

Re: A long rave

It gave me one of those neurobiological mouth reactions to read your good news on what you have achieved today, @CheerBear. And the mantra written on your hand. And that your anxiety has lessened. Rock on, sister!

Hi @CheerBear

Thank you for the wave. Like everybody else, just trying to keep cool, though the office air con is failing, 38 degrees in Melbourne today and rising.

Re: A long rave

Yay for neurobiological mouth reactions @Mazarita. You've given me plenty of them today!

Thanks also for the encouragement and support ❤

I'm going to keep chipping away at this before I lose momentum, then send off the maintainence email (with another big breath).

Hello Mazy @Mazarita, @Faith-and-Hope , @Shaz51 , @CheerBear & Everyone 🙂

Marvellous Mazy

I don’t think you’ll take offence when I tell you that you’re up there with the dogs in importance to me on a daily companionship basis 😉 I think you’ll understand what I’m saying 😉

I feel a little guilty that this summer is so much better than last here. I’m getting mid to high 30’s, but last Summer I got a month of 40-45+. It was horrific & drove me a little bit batty!! The humidity has been a little higher just lately {I think that’s got something to do with the fact that it’s actually managed to squeeze out a couple of drops of rain over the past few days?!?;)} It’s been over-cast for a couple of days at least & I expect it will soon start to show in the power-source for the house-hold, but that has also made it cooler & less heat-wave-ish here 😛

A 2.5KM Beach walk – Woo Hoo – way to go! 😄 AND another dip in the Ocean . . . Oh My Goodness!!! 😄 XD Soooo proud of you for shaping your day in such a healthy & positive way 😄 ❤️

I went over to the next little town & into the little video shop/take away store there, & got some evening entertainment for tonight this afternoon {& a gluten free choc top caramel slice! :D} 🙂 I didn't take the young fella with me, I was just grabbing some DVDs. I've decided Sundays are non-walk days, {time for the young fella to start learning he’s got an old owner ;)} I'll play with him a little, throwing a tennis ball with one of those 'long arm' throwers; I'm trying to 'explain' the 'hide & seek' game I used to play with my Dane, with the 'Biscuit ball'; though my attempts last Sunday . . . I don't think were well understood - I think I aimed a little too high, hiding the ball on the other side of the house? Because the young fella, who I had to use a lead to ensure he stayed still while I hid the ball, didn't really seem to being enjoying the game - or even recognizing there was a game being played?!? I let him off & he looked at me like 'Ok, what are we doing now?', & that's after I showed him the biscuits going into the ball & drizzling Sesame oil into the mix so it was yummy smelling too!:D It wasn't until I'd walked through the house, out to the front yard and stood with my big toe touching the ball . . . & even separated the blades of the grass a little on the tiny tuft I had placed the ball behind; . . . then the young fella got excited! I used to be able to put the ball under covers or in boxes and the Dane would still find it 🙂 . . . I wonder how the young fella will take to the game 😉 But he gets too bored sitting in the back if I’m just going to the shops, I think it’s actually good for him to have some times when he’s left at home alone: It was some me & the little fella time 😉 I let the little fella ride in the front with me when it's just us - he had a couple of years of that between where the Dane passed and the young fella came along, I think he really enjoys it . . . I never have to ask twice, in fact I never even have to ask before he jumps on in the passenger seat 😄

Speaking of seats I've ordered some new carseat covers from evil Ebay, the ones I've got are kinda cute {Tweety Bird :)} but they're also kinda falling apart. The new ones I've ordered are pretty boring, being straight black, but they're made of tougher stuff so I'm hoping they'll last a little longer 😉

I didn't have the best night’s sleep last night, my joints were being old & of all things I was woken very early with heart-burn!?! I did have a couple of pan-fried cheese toasties for dinner . . . with extra helpings of cheese as it looked a bit limp & in need of being used. Lucky I got some good ol' healthy veggies to steam up for dinner tonight, while I was in town 🙂

Well I think I've babbled-on enough for now. Thank-you for listening ❤️

Re-booting the stream at lightning bits per second 😄 ❤️

I also understand how distressing everyday stuff can be – I mean its everyday stuff so if it stuffs up it stuffing up every day stuff!!! And when you’re facing the likes of abuse in any form, connected to every day stuff . . . that means you’re facing that stress or some indirect line of it every day! Your right even the healthiest, most well-balance neuro-biological brain processes, struggle with some of the ridiculous rules and regulations we live by today! So the fact that I agree with you, does that mean I’m wearing defensive pants too? . . . . that would mean defensive pants come in the khaki-green, baggy shorts style 😉

Love to you Cheerbear
