A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Former-Member, wondering how your appointment today went. Wondering if you have been admitted to hospital. Only respond if you are in a space to do that. Mainly just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you.

Re: A long rave

Morning @Mazarita ☺ my morning just got a bit brighter for seeing you're up. I have been struggling to keep up here sometimes when threads get busy (great to see busy and chatty just tricky to keep up with sometimes). How are you going? Any plans today?

Waving a big hi to eth, Faith-and-Hope, Niqueeta1, Outlander and all ☺

Re: A long rave

@CheerBear, just got brighter for me too, that you are here.

Yes, sometimes the threads get very busy, too much to follow sometimes. Dipping in and out, at whatever pace works, is fine too.

I am going pretty well over past 10 days or so, CB (give or take usual issues).

Phone call from interstate this morning about getting some of my videos exhibited there.

Other than that, activity list for me today, more domestics. Nothing much else planned.

How about you?

Re: A long rave

That sounds exciting with your videos being exhibited @Mazarita! Probably can't ask much about that one can I?

How's friend going?

Today we are going out and about which will go into the night as one of mine and I go out to dinner with another someone. I'm going to go via a crafty shop to get some yarn, which I can hear the excitement from the kids already (not) 😛 I'm excited about that though.

Re: A long rave

Yep, that's about all I can say, @CheerBear. I know you understand.

Friend is going okay, though has times of despondency. In some ways she seems better than she was before she left her last place. In other ways it's obvious it would be best if this staying with her sister gig was short lived. The flat hunt continues with difficulty.

Glad you have a dinner to go to. And the craft shop, yay!!

Re: A long rave

@CheerBear, I'm crashing again and am going to get more sleep. Lovely to get a moment with you here this morning. Enjoy today!

Re: A long rave

I can yay and woohoo and best wishes without knowing @Mazarita (and imagine which is fun!).

It's a rollercoaster with housing. It's hard to imagine how it can happen 🙁 Big sorry that it's continuing and so difficult.

Hopefully it will be a good night. Big yay with craft shop. I found unicorn yarn (pinks, purples etc) last night so that may be what I end up with.

Just got your second message - hope sleep feels good ☺ So good to catch a moment with you ❤

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita, Claire @outlander, @Faith-and-Hope , @Shaz51 and Everybody 🙂

I'm selfishly glad your headspace got untired enough to write to me Maz 🙂 {as I'm selfishly glad I haven't crashed too! ;D} I didn't receive a call from my child last night, but I did receive a text saying they were buggered & were just going to bed, so I still think it's difficult for them; but that the calls have continued is reasurring.
I'm glad your getting some relief from the symptoms of your Crohns, and am not surprised that a serious flare-up would trigger negitive neuro-biological processes. Even without the compassionless Doctors and hideous remedies, there's the plain and simple knowledge of the disease and the pain it brings, knowing that it will never go away - it wears you down.
Sometimes the most difficult things are exactly whats needed, perhaps your friend was stuck in a rut and 'full force ahead' was the only way the Universe could move her forward? 🙂
Your allergic to sunscreen ?!!? You poor thing - but then I guess at least you have an excuse for not wearing it! 😉 I just don't like how greasy most of the stuff that will actually block any damage, feels like 😉 So like you I usually wear a shirt, I'm not so good with the hat though, the dreads make it hard to find one that fits and then it's still often uncomfortable to wear {whinge whinge}!
Both my Parents have passed away and I know your Father has passed, so I dig you visiting your Mum 🙂 Do you fly to visit her? That would be a super-blur, if not somewhere in the soul-freezing zone for me! 😄 But the alternative of sitting on a Bus for hours and hours would probably be almost as bad!
Your re-telling of your beach visit and the seagulls yesterday filled my heart with the warmth of joy, it caused a neuro-biological reaction in my brains process that resulted in the muscles of my mouth curling upwards 🙂 Now there's a positive neuro-biological process! ❤️
I have the forms to fill out for registering the hounds, but I need to visit the Vet and get some offical papers to prove the little fella is desexed {he's about 7yo I've lost them} and find his microchip papers or get him scanned; but that ball is at least rolling.
I got some pipe cleaners from Ebay, maybe not as exciting as you'd hoped 😉 But these aren't ordinary pipe cleaners, they're re-usable, made of stainless steel with a little nylon brush on the end. I get loads of stuff off evil Ebay, I call it evil because it soooo easy to use . .. . that I may use it a little too much 😉 I'm looking at 2 USB 3 battery rechargers, charging half a dozen AAA batteries, that I use in my little camp lights, right now; all recent Ebay purchases 🙂
Supporting my child from my side of my bubble is the only thing that I can do, I think my child knows me better than anyone else so somewhere in that stress frazzled brain of thiers, they know I can't keep up with the pace of the lifestyle they have chosen; there's no malice intended, I simply have to step back a little as I don't think my child can put the brakes on the pace of their life right now. ❤️
I'm glad a good day immerged for you 🙂 You deserved the reward for the effort you put in! Speaking of making an effort, I'd better get off, get ready & get into town; I've got an appointment to get a couple of new tyres. I don't like not having a spare. The puppies won't be coming, the tyre guys need to access the back of the car & I have to wander the street of my little town while it's being done. They had a good walk yesterday, I went to a favourite road that borders the Forest and walked along a dry creek bed that goes straight into it, then I pulled in at the local quarry so they could have a swim in the dam {I'm not supposed to, but it's not an active quarry, there's never anyone there}. They had a ball! 😄 I'm going to start alternating daily between off-lead & lead walks, so today can be a lead walk when I'm feeling better about having a spare tyre 😄
Loads of love to you Mazy ❤️
