A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Dear Niqua,

It's just on the pumpkin hour and I'm still awake tonight. I have been sleeping a fair bit still. At other times I've been very wired and trying to calm myself down. I know that I prefer trying to calm down than trying to raise myself out of the heavy state of inertia, that's the really hard part for me. I can only say that though because meds keep my 'highs' at a semi-managable level. The big high I had that lasted five years, it was like I was a different woman.

Good stuff happening as well in these days of not being much on the forum, including completing a new video. And I got another load of washing done in the way of personal chores. And dishes. Bed's been made on some days at least. Been seeing my close friend just about every day. Beach has been a no go past couple of days. Will be getting out to meet support worker tomorrow and, with any luck, join an art group for the first time.

Spoke to mum on the phone today, a good chat. Do you speak on the phone to the centre of your universe? When is your next camping trip? You may have posted the answers to these questions elsewhere but I haven't been online here much. Looking forward to the answers to these questions and more.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita🙂

So good to hear from you, like I said I would be, I'm thrilled 😄 😄 Thank you for doing so

I've still been managing {pretty much} to go to bed by pumpkin hour, I've got my herbal sleep assist back {I go to the chemist while I'm in the center of my Universe}. Sorry your struggle for a sleep pattern is eluding you. I don't get the 'heavy state of inertia' that you speak of much, more a constant 'heavy state of motorvationless' . . . and that's been going on for years. I live alone, so there's no-one else to make a mess, I don't work so there's no reason not to clean up . . . . I just don't and it feels like a physical block. 5 years of being 'high', I think I'd like that 🙂 I don't tend to get high, I get angry . . . and I don't want to be angry. I had a day, only a few days back, where I did indeed feel 'high', I don't know where it came from, I don't have anyone that could 'slip' me something, I don't have anything, but it has given me a bit of a motorvational kick; and well today is day number 5 that I've done the dishes! 😄

Yay for the good stuff happening - completing a new video, the big word there for me was 'completing' 😄 Well done! Awesome!:D Yee Haa for the washing, dishes and bed making - I've been doing the same! {Shock Horror :D} But I really need to have a bathing day, my little fella's just looking sad, he's a long haired breed and although I do clip around his face, it is a little grown and his eyes weep a bit, which gets stuck in the hair, goes hard and then pokes in his eyes; his breed is reknowned for eye infections from that. I also know that I personally need a bathing day, I suffer a little from incontinence, and know that happened on the way back from the Center of my Universe, and a couple of times since - I also know I haven't bathed since before I went there. I wonder why personal hygene is so hard?

I think I'm jealous that you have a close friend, . .. that you have friends . . . but I'm happy for you at the same time 🙂 It's still what I wish upon the first star every night. It's no-ones fault, not even mine, I can't trust, believe, any person in real life - and I'm left with an unrequentable longing. I think I'm jealous of you having a beach near where you live too! But hell, I visit coastal hinterland every month, where there are several beaches nearby, one as close as 20 minutes away . . . and I've seen that beach once in 2 - 3 dozen visits. Enjoy your meeting with your support worker and Oh My Goodness! I really hope you do join that art group! It could be an excellent outlet for you creativity, and I'm proud of the courage your showing!! 🙂 😄

Good to hear you had a good chat with your Mum yesterday, I do speak on the phone with the Center of my Universe every night. Sometimes I feel like a burden because of it and have even suggested they didn't, I was more than thrilled to hear them say they wanted to 🙂 Though of course I still doubt it, they know what a looney I am, more than anyone else - they know I rely on them and that they are the only real person in my life. So I always try to be as positive and as up-beat as I can; I always agree with them, even if I'm thining 'what the hell are you doing!'. I think they need someone to be constantly on their side, and that gives me a purpose in life.

My next camping trip is still in the back of my mind and I still havn't picked up one piece of packing. I was going to continue with my washing and maybe I still will, while the bathing water is heating. If I do, I'm up to some of the camping gear, and that will mean eventually I'll have to bring it in off the line .. . and that may kick in to gear some motorvation for packing it away 🙂 I've been online and have a definite idea for where I want to go for a second camping site, planning to return to the first for a night and then move on to the second 🙂 I've gotten as far as planning 🙂

Lucky I'm on the 'long rave' thread hey! 😄

Hoping you do join that art class and get a glimpse of the beach today 🙂

Loads of love to you Mazy

Niqua

Re: A long rave

Hi, @Former-Member, from the other side of the pumpkin hour again. I very much related when you said:

"...there's no reason not to clean up . . . . I just don't and it feels like a physical block."

Yes, that's the bottom line isn't it? What you actually do and don't do, regardless of intention. I too find myself 'just not doing' things I intend to every day. As for you, this usually feels like a physical block to me. I just cannot move myself on things, way too often.

As for the five year 'high'. Well, it was a manic time. Mania is not really comfortable, though it's exhilarating. It's not the same as joy, having a hollow and over-wired feeling to it. It also involved a lot of sudden changes of mood even within the overall 'high'. So that I could go from smiling and laughing to collapsed in deep-sobbing tears in the space of nanoseconds. And then fairly quickly back again. A confusing time during which I somehow managed to convince myself I was still in control of my life.

I used to be an angrier person too, Niqua, especially I was much more destructive in relationships, and verbally abusive. One of the meds I take has helped a lot with this.

Day five on the dishes, way to go, sister!

Me too with the personal hygiene issues. I go too long between showers. Another of those things I just find myself 'not doing' too often, regardless of what the plan is.

Thanks for being glad for my social life in the really real. I don't know if I told you that, before coming on the forum, I spent several years almost never leaving the flat. I almost never went to the beach, even though it was close. My close friend and C were the only people I saw. A big chunk of that time I slept 20 hours a day. As I was coming out of that, I just sat like a zombie all day in a chair. Where I am now with getting out and more engaged with other people is the outcome of about three years working towards expanding my boundaries and confidence in this regard, an ongoing process.

Didn't make it to either of my planned outings yesterday, no art, no support worker. A feral day. And in the afternoon my support worker rang to say she is moving to another job and next week is our last meeting. That's after seeing and appreciating each other's company for the past eighteen months! I will miss her but am really glad that she is advancing to an expanded job role.

I'm really glad to know that you speak on the phone every night with the Centre of your Universe. Being the person who is 'always on their side' is a wonderful thing. Good to hear this provides a sense of purpose too.

Hugs, Niqua.

Hugs to anyone else passing through who wants them too.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita🙂

It's a little scary, I now have clean dishes (actually did them before I got on here!), clothes, bed(already made!), critters and even myself!! I feel exhausted though, maybe that's what happens when I move that physical 'block'?

The little spike of 'high' seems to have withered away now and I'm thinking I might just try to keep 'on top' of those things for a while; or I'm worried I'll burn out entirely and lose all that gained ground.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make light of your Mania - I did know that's what you meant. I remember a Doctor throwing the title Bipolar at me {boderline I think} and thinking to myself 'I don't get the highs!'. In fact I think that's a big part of the reason I turned to substances, because my body doesn't make those 'feelings'. Though I could definitely jump from being fairly balanced to the bottom of the pit, not in nanoseconds, but fairly quickly. Getting back out of the pit seem to take forever.

I think we learn anger from anger, I think you faced a lot of it too. I think I learnt submission from my Mother. Combining those lessons I think was just too confusing. You'd think they'd be a conflict to each other, but I think one begets the other and vica versa.

Dishes 6 days, washing 3, bed made 5!!!! The rubbish has been taken away, me and the critters are clean, the fires been ready each night {before dark} and I've even cooked a little dinner here and there!!! I will let myself blow that trumpet 😄

I wonder what it is about personal hygene? I like the feeling of being clean, clean skin, hair, teeth - I love the warm water and it's not hard to heat a little up. But for me even more basic things become a bother - eating and drinking, the act of chewing and swallowing, peeing and pooping; it's like, I've been doing those things for over 50 years and I've had enough.

You probably did tell me of your years of self-imprisonment, damned memory of mine can be a pest. I already had a picture of you having very limited contact with people in your later years (I think it's one of the things that drew me to you). I feel sorrow for those years of yours, I think it's a reflection of my own. That's why I'm so proud of your stepping up and out, and you give me hope 🙂

Bugger about your support worker, I think I felt some of your disapointment when I read it, it felt quite crushing - like losing a friend. Will you get another one? That gives me a tingle of excitement, like meeting a new friend I suppose.

Lots of love and hugs to you Mazy

Niqua

@Mazarita @Former-Member
Saying to yourself "I'm going to clean up today / tomorrow" & then not following through. That I understand.
Knowing you need a wash. Clean sheets on the bed. But not doing it. That I understand.
What I don't understand is WHY?
I don't know if it's my depression or something else mental. Or whether I'm just plain lazy.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, great to see you back. Looking forward to hearing how things went with your visitors if you feel like sharing.

Hi @Former-Member, I'm so happy to hear you are having such a positive burst of domestic energy. I also know what you mean when you say you feel exhausted after doing fairly basic things, a 'fallout' of some kind from overcoming the 'blocks'. I relate too to the feeling that the huge effort it seems to do basic self care can even cause burnout.

No worries about making light of mania. In many ways that's probably the best way to approach it, laughter being good medicine as it so is. But I do have complex feelings about that time in my life and feel somewhat traumatised by it in some ways, even though in so many ways I did everything to myself.

I know what you mean too about your body not making the feelings of 'highs'. Hugs for having to go through that. I still get highs (smaller and shorter-lived ones) now, that's probably obvious from how I am on the forum and what I share about my life. The pit underneath me is heavy too, mate, for possibly biological reasons. It's amazing the depressed behaviours I see in myself that I saw in my dad too, odd things indicating, like you say, some kind of exhaustion with living. So good to hear you feel hope.

When I told C about the imminent end of seeing my support worker, he said, "she gave you back your hope". It has been a privilege to know her and I will always remember this special time we spent together. The plan I've chosen is to trial me finishing with seeing any more support workers after next week. For an extended time after that, her supervisor will ring me every couple of weeks to check how I am going independently. If I seem to be maintaining my improved social engagement, and I'm not going into a big decline, we will look at me exiting the Phams program by the end of the year. I'm welcome to participate in their activities during this next period of time. More often, I go to another local mental health centre and get involved with some things there. I feel okay about it all really.

Love to all.

Edit: Hi @utopia, missed your message while posting mine. Yes, the dreaded 'lazy'. Doesn't seem to matter what we call it, the result is the same for more of the time than seems healthy: basic things we planned to do, not getting done. And there's chronic pain in the process. I call myself lazy all the time (and many other unsavoury things, sadly), but it doesn't shift it in me to do that either. All we can do is keep trying I guess.

Re: A long rave

Hiya everyone .....:

I'm not in that place right now @utopia, but I have been ...... there are many reasons for burn-out, depression amongst them ......

If I am struggling to get things done, I have given myself a boundary. It doesn't matter how small I break tasks down to ..... that's it .....

Can't wash the sheets ? I throw my pillow case into the next washload. Can't get it dry the same day ? Throw a towel over the pillow ... that'll do. If that's my whole achievement for the day, well I did something .... and that was enough for my state of mind.

I keep a packet of baby wash cloths in my bathroom cupboard. Can't shower ? Wash something ..... somewhere ..... underarms, under toes, back of neck ...... just somewhere ..... box ticked !

Sometimes just taking an ant-step enables you to take another one ..... Doesn't always work, but usually does.

I hope that helps.

I actually just dropped in to say "hi" .... 😏👋
