A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita That sounds like a fantastic idea! I wish I had a pool. Good on you. It will probably never get used so you will have it all to yourself most of the time. Yes I am going for a power walk with my daughter this morning. I am trying to lead by example as she is clinically obese so when I suggested a walk and she said yes I thought WhooHoo! So we will do that thenwalk to our local cafe for a treat (well she will have the treat I wont lol).

I will be doing some gardening this afternoon which will be nice. I love being out in the garden.

Lucky you going to Melbourne! Are you planning on hitting the shops while you are there?

Re: A long rave

@Bunniekins, how nice to be doing that with your daughter. Gardening sounds cool too. I just got in from rearranging the potplants in the courtyard. That and watering is about the extent of it for me. But plant life is lovely.

My trips to Melbourne usually happen once a year to see my mum, some other family and old friends from there (lived there most of my life). I don't do much shopping but I do go out into the country for quality time with my oldest friend who lives there. That's lovely.

Well, I'm getting a little sleepy so I might get in a bit of a nana nap before I go out today. Good to see you, gp, hope your day goes great.

Re: A long rave

About 5.30am and I have just opened the glass doors to the main room to give the air inside the flat a flush and let in some early morning air, before it gets too hot to have the doors open again today. Yesterday we were holed up inside most of the day turning the aircon on and off to survive the heat. Too hot last night to have the doors open, cooler inside. So it was a bit stuffy in here when I first woke up.

Early morning birds are making gentle, not-yet-quite-awake sounds. The magpies singing a low, melodic warble. Answered by birds of different species tinkling quietly, as if in response.

Yesterday I did get out once, in the middle of the day, to look at a flat with my friend. It's barely adequate for her needs but we put in an email application anyway. There are so few flats coming up in this area where she's lived for the past fifteen years, even fewer that are on the ground floor (she is unable to walk up more than a few stairs), and then there's the prices, which have skyrocketed leading up to the commonwealth games. This one we saw is relatively affordable for her and does meet basic needs. So fingers crossed it comes off. There were about 30 people looking at it.

Then my friend and I came back to our place to do the application. That was a bit of a miracle because, in the four years we've been here, she's never come visited us once. We have more stairs in this building than she can usually manage so that's kept her from visiting us. But she managed the stairs okay yesterday, with a bit of double-handed gripping of the handrail. We all really enjoyed the novel experience of her visiting us, instead of us visiting her.

Another relatively good night's sleep, with only one awakening last night, and fairly quick back to bed, instead of staying awake for hours as I often have done. It makes a big difference feeling better rested.

Still sunburnt from my walk on the beach a couple of days ago. I don't get sunburned very often but the sun is extra fierce at the moment. I've been alternately applying aloe vera and paw paw ointment to it. How good is paw paw ointment? It seems to have almost magic properties to me! Very healing to the skin.

Today I have no plans, other than surviving the heat and humidity. Doubt that I'll get out as it's going to be even hotter today than yesterday. It's the hottest summer here for decades. From what I've read, that's the case elsewhere too. The way climate change seems to be going, I'll be migrating south at some point in my life, I think! Super hot summers and my constantly overheating body do not mix that well!

Now, how to finish this early morning rave? Since I'm hearing bird sounds, here are some pretty birds we saw in the yard one day at my friend's old place. These lovelies are called pale-headed rosellas. Though they live around here, I've not seen them often, so they are a bit special to me. Good morning everyone!

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita and all. Really enjoyed reading your morning rave Mazarita and felt all the feels with it. That would have been really interesting to have your friend over at your house. You are such a good friend.

I hope you can stay cool today. That hear sounds horrible. I'm in a dressing gown, slipper boots, and blanket and it's rained so heavily there are big puddles outside. It's too cold for me this morning but in a few days we're expecting closer to 40 again which will be too hot. Hard to imagine at the moment and it seems comfortable weather days are not happening for many all around the place!

Hope the day goes well for all 💗

Re: A long rave

@CheerBear, hey there, my fellow early morning riser. Always lovely to meet up with you for an exchange of first morning words.

I'll be cool enough inside with aircon on and off today. I don't like using the aircon really because it's no good for the environment. But I'm weak when it comes to extremes of weather. At least we only use it in bursts. Hard to imagine being in boots, dressing gown and blanket! Do we live in the same country? Lol.

Fortunately we don't get anything like 40 very often. I think it's going to be 33 today, with a storm later. But 33 here feels like it's much hotter to me because of the humidity, which is at 100%.

Hope the day goes well for you too, CB. Do you have any plans?

Re: A long rave

Those 30's where you are are so uncomfortable with that humidity @Mazarita :S I understand with the air con but getting a break from that discomfort and looking after you is important too, as I'm sure you do 🙂

I just checked my weather app and it's around 10 here. Brrrrrrr.

I have sick littles. One was throwing up yesterday and is still feeling unwell this morning and another crashed last night so I'm expecting maybe they will come down with it also. Both were in my bed not sleeping well last night so today has to be another home day I think 😞 Crossing everything it doesn't hit number three and me too. I reeeeeeally want to get out and about but we probably won't be able to with them not very well. That's all for us really.

Re: A long rave

Looks like it's going to be an indoors day for both of us then, @CheerBear. Sorry to hear about your sick little ones. Healing vibes on your house.

I may be on and off the forum a fair bit today because I think it'll be a computer day. I may do some video editing too. I may get rather bored, lol.

Have a good one, my dear forum friend, whatever you and the littlies manage to do today.

Re: A long rave

We might have similar sounding days ahead (in same but different ways) @Mazarita. I can see myself going between disinfecting the house, blanket making, foruming and movie pretend-to-be-watching (there are only so many times I can watch some of these shows haha!).

You too lovely friend. Thank you ❤

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazarita @Mazarita thank you for your wonderful update. I love rading what you have been doing as you write so well ... may be you should be a writer? Ever considered it? ,.. Good Morning also to @CheerBear@eth@Former-Member@Shaz51 hoping everyone has a great day today.

Well yesterday here was so hot and muggy it was ridiculous. The unit that I live in has no aircon or ceiling fans so both myself and my kidults each have our own fan only our poor fur baby (who spent all of yesterday under my bed) has to tough it out. Am looking forward to getting out today for a bit as the weather will be alot cooler and hopefully I will be able to get my children out of bed for a walk before any heat stops usl

Hear is a bit of news I have decided to grow my hair out a bit; I have had it very short for about a year and was getting bored with it so decided last December not to cut it. I am using cute clips to keep the growing out stage under control. I would like it just on my shoulders so that I can tie it backand up in a bun. I am getting a few strands of grey which I also like. I want my hair to be all greyl like this I think grey hair can look classy if looked after properly and that is what I am aiming for. I am away off the above but maybe if I worry and stress somemore it will hurry up.

Anyway that is my news. Love to you all gp
