A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

ummm @Bunniekins, there was one walk a few months ago when I was really in an anxious state my pup had been all over the shop as I probably channeled my anxiety and stress down the lead at her and she started jumping towards every dog she saw and generally not taking ANY notice of me, I felt out of control with her and these young men were crossing the road towards me with an equally bouncy but much bigger dog also straining at their leash - and I only had 10 steps to where I could turn into my steet off the main road and be home safe in another 100 steps -and these boys were not reading my body language and ignoring the postenital for a dog fight happening so I DID yell Stay away stay away! and they stopped and looked at me like the demented being I was at that moment. So I don;t want a repeat of that performance. (I hope they were not locals!).

I started swimming after my back injury/surgery and was in mania post surgery (anaesthetics and pain meds - and at the time not medicated for bipolar (didn't;t even know i then I lived with bipolar back then, I did just hadn't been diagnosed. I became SUPER fit and went swimming twice a day - hundreds of laps a day. That, of course, stopped when I fell out the other side it was a very long mania - lasted 6 months.

And once I went on meds and started growing into the mountain of a woman I currently am and doing my shoulders in (started with resistance excercises int he pool back when I was swimming too and then my pup pulled my shoulder and I got bursistis again) I haven;t been for a swim for two years. I have a new years unresolution to go to the physiotherapist and see if with a programme I might get my shoulder back to fitness so i CAN start swimming again. Walking is hard because of the parasthesia below my left knee after the spinal injury, but I still go out and do it as often as I can.

I am UP to something, just not sure what. I can't use an exercise or real bike because of sciatic pain... swimming would be the best thing for me. Do you like swimming?

(I am hypo today so sorry for ALL the words.)

@MoonGal you poor thing with the dog walk I would be very upset if that happened to me ... no wonder it has affected you so much but dont worry honestly I am sure I have outdone your crazy lady look many times 😄

I think long distance swimmers are brilliant ... I couldnt swim more than a couple of lengths ... well done for what you have achieved with that. Yes I had a very long mania with the gym too lol. I was so thin and ripped not a bit of fat on me and I loved it in a way ... but was miserable and mad at the same time.

I have Bipolar 1 and schizoaffective disorder. It is controlling my life .... this year I am determined to gain better control over it ... I am sick of have a MI

Re: A long rave

ooops that 1/2 hour turned into an hour had to feed the doggits and shave the back of partner's neck - she just had a hair cut and they didn't finish it of properly. Then we got talking about her workaday. So anyways - it has been lovely talking to you too @Bunniekins - hope to catch you around the forum again sometime.

I live with BiPolar, OCD, CPtsd and Anxiety. I don;t become psychotic unless there has been some catalyst like new medication or post operative, then I am gone for all money for a while. I am very fortunate to have a partner who just takes crazy into her stride.

See you again @Bunniekins!

Re: A long rave

Back again after dinner now, @MoonGal, @Bunniekins.

@MoonGal, I remember those bell bottom trackies, in fact I think I've still got a pair hidden in a corner of my winter cupboard. I've got running shoes, vintage about 10 years ago. I don't have a sports bra, hoping an ordinary one I bought recently will suffice for now. I'm not getting a session tomorrow, just doing signup and orientation, during which I book in for my free personal trainer session. That will probably be later this week, I'm guessing. Yes, the weight gain is a bad side effect of the meds, and I also totally understand the myriad mood reasons that can keep us inside even when we really intend to go out and get active.

@Bunniekins, I can imagine how exercise might become a bit addictive as an escape from other things. I may find that I'm not really up to the gym at this time in my life too, but keeping fingers crossed I can take it slowly and very gradually build up strength and resilience. The main difficulty for me will be getting myself there regularly enough. It's a huge struggle for me keeping things up once I've started them. Luckily there is no lock in contract.

Well, maybe that's enough about gym going!

Hope the evening is bringing some okay moments to everyone reading.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita I really wish you well with the gym. It wil be a huge step to make even if you only go once or twice a week it would be wonderful for your mind and body. You should feel very proud of yourself that you are even contemplating this 😄

You might be thinking why is gp up at this ungodly hour well ... part of the problem of drinking so much water is that what goes in has to come out! So I thought once I did what I had to do I would check the messages!

So since it is now 1.21 I will wish you all a Good Morning! @Mazarita@MoonGal@eth@outlander@Shaz51 and let's all have a wonderful day 🙂
