A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi Niqua, so good to hear from you when I got home last night.

Yesterday was the big final day of packing for my friend's moving out of her flat, was there from 10.30am to about 9pm. Exhausting, even though we paced ourselves. May end up there again today, depends how my friend feels after the removalists have taken her stuff to storage. There is still quite a lot of loose ends to tie up after that but she will ring me if she wants me.

Anyway, it seems yesterday exercised most of the words out of me. So I'll leave this one short and sweet for now.

Love to you, and strength for what you are going through while at your centre. @Former-Member

Hi Niqua, Outlander and everyone,

Niqua, remember to take some deep breaths in the midst of the madness. Even if you have to do it on the toilet (as it sounds like that's about the only place you would get to take a conscious breath at the moment!)

I am sorry to hear your body and mind are struggling. If you need to come home early for your own health and sanity, I reckon you should just do that. It sounds scary the stuff with the car and other things.

Your new year day sounds wonderful. Do you get to the beach often? Groovy that a couple of people talked to you.

I wouldn't worry about camping just now. There's always time for more camping trips.

I'm presently recovering at home from another morning helping my friend with her move out of her flat. Her stuff is in storage now and she has a fairly full car of stuff she's taking to her sister's place. It will probably have to mostly stay in the car until she finds a place as her sister has no storage. The sister lives in an over-55s retirement village in a very small flat. The 60 year old sister will be sleeping on a mattress on the floor while my friend is there. My friend needs the bed more and her sister is making the kind sacrifice.

It's amazing how upbeat my friend is, she's clicked into a really helpful attitude somehow at this end part of the process, even though she was barely able to do any packing due to her level of disability. Mostly I think other people have packed for her. I'm glad it's somehow managed to be done for now and I'm relieved this part of things is over, though I will continue to be involved in doing the rental applications for her from here at my place.

So, anyway, this is a portrait of the housing crisis here in the lead up to the commonwealth games. Thanks a lot, commonwealth games. Thanks a lot real estate agents who are in the business of artificially inflating rents. Thanks for not much I mean. My little rant is over at this point.

Re: A long rave

Morning @Mazarita and all 🙂

Thanks for your reply about the question I asked in the other thread Maz. I'm going to reply properly once I process things a bit more, but I wanted to say hi here. I had coffee with two crows (or birds that looked like crows crossed with Magpies - can't remember their name). It made me think of you.

The housing situation is so unfair 😞 It's great to hear your friend is upbeat considering what's happened. I wonder if that has anything to do with the support a friend has given her? 😉

Really melty hot here today and I am feeling it in the air already. Any plans for you (all) today?

Hope there's good somewhere 🙂

Hi to Niqua, Outlander, eth and all

Re: A long rave

Hi @CheerBear, thanks for the kind words about the housing journey I have been on with my friend, and am still on with her really. I am going with her to look at another place on Monday. The only thing to do at this point is keep trying, though she has also started thinking about share house options with family or other people she knows, or knows of. No solid options there yet though.

The bird that was like a crow crossed with a magpie... was it a currawong? They have a special place in my heart.

I am recovering today from past two days of helping out. Probably won't get up to much aside from computer. I've seen the heatwave weather reports for a lot of the country. Extreme weather. I hope everyone is okay. We are getting it relatively mildly here, though it is hot and humid, feels tropical lately, though we are only sub-tropics here.

Hope it's a good one for you and @everyone.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita something that jumps into my mind with housing stuff is an article I read about resilience and how much value we place on resilience (for obvious reasons) but how sometimes it could be so much more helpful for the people in the world if the focus was on resources more than resilience. So many people are so resilient (you and your friend in this instance really stand out), but it's incredibly hard to keep trying when there isn't enough out there to get hold of. There isn't much else you can do, but I respect and appreciate the struggle that comes with trying ❤

I think it was a currawong 🙂 I said hi to it for you.

I hope your recovery day is a good one. I'm going to try and get more of this blanket done (getting close now) until we melt and turn into puddles that can do not a lot of anything.

💗

Re: A long rave

So true what you say about resilience versus resources, @CheerBear. There is a systemic problem here where investment housing is a big part of the economy at the great expense of having a home to go to for increasing numbers of people in the rental market. The resources involved in teaching people to be resilient while living on the street seem misplaced compared to putting those resources towards housing them, for example.

Thanks for passing on a hi for me to the currawong. I do talk to them from time to time myself. There are a lot of them around here.

Enjoy your crochet.

Re: A long rave

Middle of the night awakening, body still sore from the (relatively small) amount of physical work I did a couple of days ago to help my friend with her move out of her flat. Yesterday I spent recovering. I found it hard to keep my eyes open for a lot of the day and evening, slept a lot.

In between sleeps, stuff on my videos, admin stuff mostly. I wasn't up to the high energy concentration of making videos. Didn't leave the flat all day.

Today, I may surprise myself and get out on the beach, though low tide isn't until late afternoon. That's when my feet allow me to walk there, less pain. At the higher tide marks, the sand is too soft and I just can't make it without my legs giving out on me.

Not sure what else I'll be doing today. There is housework to catch up on. That's something else I might do. Bigger week this one coming so won't stress too much about how much I do today. I do need a shower though.

I appreciate having this space here for these quasi-journal entries in the middle of nights. Sometimes, like now, I don't have much to say, but want to express how I am anyway, even if boring to read. It's for the therapeutic benefit of writing things out loud, as it were. Mainly at the moment, I'm tired. As usual, but significantly more so.

Hope there is new energy for everyone passing by in the morning.
