A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth hope Easter has brought some enjoyable moments. Also hope the stress, anxiety and anger about support workers are giving you a break.

I am starting individualised yoga sessions with my old support worker (also now a friend) in eight days. Meant to start last week but she and her family all had colds.

I will be taking the train to the station near where she lives. 10 minute walk to the nearest station to me, followed by 10 minutes on train to her. She will pick me up and we'll go back to her yoga room for the session.

I have already done a couple of brief but beautiful guided meditations she recommended as the start of our weekly yoga work.

Met my support co-ordinator about a week ago. I made contact with three recommended people before deciding. I feel a strong affinity with the lovely woman I have chosen to go with and amazed at the range of options and activities I can choose to help me.

She has already found me a good plan manager. They work together a lot. Both of them have already started work for me. Expecting to hear from a cleaning service on Thursday.

About a week after that my support worker/friend will add a second weekly session with me to get put and about together. We will probably just go for a nature walk to start up these sessions.

My intention is to grow the activities relaxedly, and have already cued my support workers into helping me slow down if I start galloping ahead.

I have specifically explained to them that what could potentially look like exciting, fast-growing activity from me, may in fact be a sign that I am becoming obsessed and heading towards hypomania. I have adked them to help me keep my progress slow, steady and relaxed.

Recently I made a big realisation about how I feel in the wake of 2019's big achievements. It's become clear to me that I no longer wish to be so driven towards ambitious achievements. At almost 59 I have decided I am retired from all this, though I will be continuing creative work, hopefully for the rest of my life.

But I feel I have achieved enough in my non-paying artistic career over my life now. It is time for me to relax into my senior years and simply enjoy the last phase of my life as much as possible.

Even just thinking this way about the future now is relaxing me. Time for an imaginary gold watch.

Re: A long rave

Gidday from me too @Mazarita @Exoplanet @Appleblossom @outlander @Always-hope @Zoe7 @Shaz51 @Angels333 !! I've been missing in action lately, just keeping up with daily life and having some extra writing times to prepare for the residency. Still no start date for that which is getting frustrating. I've done a few new stories and am going to enter 2 of them into a major national competition. It's a bit like sending them out into the ether as if you don't win a prize you get no feedback, but it does feel good to have a go.

Things are settling in with the new support worker and I've got my car back from sil so have been doing some driving again.

Challenge for today is to make some pesto in my new food processor that I haven't used before. I always get nervous and delay such things.

@Mazarita it's great to hear things are falling into place for you too. Not that falling into place is accurate - I know how much energy and time go into getting services lined up and on board.

Sending love to you all and the hope that today is one of the better ones.

Re: A long rave

Hey @eth Annoying you don't have a date for the residency but great you are writing.

Btw the tags didn't work - was actually coming looking for you and saw your post.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Zoe7 thanks for the heads up about the tags not working. Hopefully they are now. I completely forgot to join last night's discussion and am looking at the transcript now. I probably would have had a fair bit to contribute as I've been using a WRAP since 2013ish and find it invaluable. Not just for me but for my support people and mental health team too. If you are around and there's a new thread about it after the discussion, please tag me there or tell me the name of it here. Looks like it was a lively talk.

Hope you are well today xx

Tagging @TideisTurning too in case you can post me a link to any new thread about early signs and WRAPs started after last night's discussion.

Re: A long rave

Don't know if there is a thread @eth Felt pretty invisible in that discussion to be honest and had to leave. I hope others got something out of it though.

I am doing okay. Have a lingering cold but it is not too bad so coping okay. Been dosing up on vitamins and resting after my appointments so very much hoping that helps it disappear quickly. Didn't sleep much last night though - hot and cold and couldn't get comfortable so was up a few times. Having Clover play time now - she is trying to help me type lol

Re: A long rave

Thanks @Zoe7 . I just read the entire transcript and I did pick up that it wasn't really working for you. It does happen fast and that stops people from directly responding to each other's comments as there's not enough time to read them all.

Really hope you are recovering and feel well again soon. Take care my friend, xoxo
