A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

The complete opposite in Tassie than the rest of the eastern states @Mazarita - dry and warm but feeling for those in the flood areas and hoping the rain stops soon

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth I understand, same for both of us at the moment. We are all going through different things in our lives and the major parts are offline, at least that's the best priority. You will be so well prepared at your retreat. Anyway, at least we can pass messages across time.

I seem just today to have reached the part of the NDIS process where I'm getting a little excited in a happy way about the next call from them in the next few days, and especially starting with my support worker (her individual yoga sessions with me most of all). Even just getting to spend time with her each week.

Hi @Zoe7 road was closed being driven to my friend's place earlier tonight. I personally like the rain on the GC for a bit of relief from the sun we get so much. I know that sounds weird! But for the NSW places, or anyone affected badly, I hope there is a relief from it.

Hi @Eve7 hope the road was open all the way for you.

Hey @Mazarita Maz I'm here earlier than usual as I'm interviewing people for the new support worker position today and had an online message from one postponing. My coordinator of supports is going to come here to be with me while I do it. At this stage 3 back to back from 11.45 - around 2. Kinda looking forward to it as I'm pretty well prepared. Not as anxious or overwhelmed as I was last time I had to do it. I think my job ad was much better worded this time so I only had to field 8 responders who all had the right quals and fit my work exp. criteria. Last time (Nov 2019) I had to filter out 53 ppl, even blokes and 19yo physiotherapy students (I generalise but it's a stereotype) applied despite me specifying over 35 and female!

Not this time thank goodness.

So glad to hear you're starting to feel excited about the immediate future. A little hope goes such a long way in our lives doesn't it. And happy for you to continue with the one you know. I recommend checking out the Hireup platform when looking for another sw. It's worked incredibly well for me for a couple of years now. They cost us less than a lot of major organisations do, pay the sw more, plus the sw chooses their own hours and types of support they want to do so they tend to be a happier lot. When I dealt with 3 different organisations it was so frustrating to have to have a sw when the company rostered them and not be able to choose times that worked better for me, plus the sw's were often frustrated and somewhat powerless to the whims of their employers.

So looking forward to a live chat sometime but have commitments every day this week already. It won't happen overnight but it will happen - as they used to say in the Pantene ad.

Hope your day is good and that you've had some rest overnight xoxo

Hi @eth hope your support worker meetings go well and you choose someone great for you. Seems like there may be a lot of support workers out of work for you to need to filter out over 50 people last time around. Already I have found it unfamiliar to effectively being interviewing people for a job when we seek support people. That's just from having contact with three potential support co-ordinators so far. I will be writing to the woman I wish to go with after this.

I joined HireUp on your recommendation a little while ago and the account is just sitting there now for when and if I need to use it. They keep sending me reminder notices, lol. I will generally be avoiding organisations for same reasons as you (to minimise the admin processes, scheduling inflexibilities etc.), and maybe also just because I would rather be giving work to experienced mental health professionals who have been put out of their jobs by the change from community-funded organisations to the individualised NDIS scheme.

Funny with the Pantene ad, hehehe. To be honest I find live chat tiring at the moment and actually prefer these messages across time. Nonetheless I will keep checking in to see if you happen to be around.

How are you with the rain? Been going here for days. Received a watch and act sms yesterday for low lying areas around here. Some parts of this suburb have flooded but I don't think there have been any inundated homes. We are fine where we are on higher ground and are unaffected, except for the blocked road last night and a water on the balcony yesterday from the wind blowing sheets of it in.

Have a good one, my friend.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Bunniekins just read a post from you in another thread but that didn't seem the place to reply the way I want to.

Your breaking bed seems funny in a way except that you now have to sleep at a crazy angle. Hope the ex can fix it today or very much ASAP. When I was a very poor young artist I spent months sleeping on a bed base with no mattress! Really didn't bother me either.

Happy to hear bunny is okay. I was thinking just yesterday of your bunny! For some reason I see him/her hopping up and down stairs, but I don't think you have them at your place. Guess I've now got an imaginary bunny friend!

Love to you. From what I've been reading, I sense you are going through hard stuff that can barely be talked about. Hope you get some laughs today.

@Bunniekins so sorry that's what you are going through. I am here anytime you want to talk and am non-judgemental, especially when it comes to my friend The Pea. Hope things start to look better for you asap.
