A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Thanks all @Shaz51 @outlander @Sans911 @Maggie much appreciated. Feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything I have to do. Trying to prioritise tasks and hoping to pace myself and slow things down a bit. Overwhelmed at times.

Take care and stay kind xx

Re: A long rave

My 1st Week in Aged Care Job -

I’ve Done the Maths – having Driven 400Km + this week, for only 17.5 hours pay.

Cost me $50 in Petrol – not Paid for by work (not Paying Kms).

Even with only a Tiny bit of Tax taken out (I pretended it would be tiny) – That would Leave me with $350 per week.

That does not even include the cost of extra Car Servicing (Huge Kms), & Wear & Tear on my car.

I need about $450 per week Minimum, to Cover my Expenses (with No Savings).

Jobseeker/ Newstart is Currently $400 per week – More than I would Easily Ever Earn in this Job.

I will Go into Debt (Backwards) at about $100 per week ($400 per month) – Or more, with this Job in this Situation.

That’s over $5000 into Debt (Backwards) over 12 months.

It is considerably (far) Worse than I could ever have imagined – Largely (not all) Due to driving 400Km.

Number Crunching does not lie.

This will financially Ruin me – As well as completely Trashing my car.

I have always been Very Thrifty (I am repeatedly Told) - I have Survived on Tiny $$ Income, that many people would find Impossible.

In fact I managed on impossibly Little $$ Income for Several Years.

This is in fact worse than that - Because I am incurring $100's of weekly expenses (not paid for by work).

I cannot make it work - We Need Superman, or my Fairy Godmother, to be able to make it work.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Zoe7 thanks a lot for your words. Always a pleasure knowing you too. Sending warm wishes your way.

And Hello @Mazarita in case you read this at some stage.

@Adge sorry to hear you are not better off $wise with the new job. Perhaps you've made a decision about whether to keep doing it since your post above. I hope you find a workable solution.

Hi also to @MDT @Emelia8 @Bunniekins @Shaz51 @Schitzo @outlander @Maggie @TAB @Sophia1 I can see some of you have tagged me and will get to your posts after this.

Part of why I'm missing in action is that I have to tether my phone to my laptop to get online as I couldn't afford to go nbn and telstra gave me a good data deal. But some of the things I do (zoom meetings, telehealth and the like) use a lot of data. So I don't spend much other time online. Today will be an experiment in how much data the forums use.

Also as you probably know by now I stepped down from community guide role a couple of weeks ago. Possibly poor timing as a lot of other changes happened with the SANE team at the same time, but I needed to do it for myself. I still feel I made the right decision for several reasons I won't go into just now.

My new place is light and airy, has a lovely cross breeze most of the time (1st floor with the beach only 1km away so it's often a sea breeze) and also very quiet almost all the time. It's an over 55's complex and the only disturbance is one older lady who like to sing loudly early in the morning - more funny than annoying. Not far from here is a street with a lot of cafes and restaurants and there are also lots of arty places in the area, including the main city gallery where I was doing live readings before covid. And large park and bowling club just down my street, plus a couple of churches. Some who know me have said it was hand-picked for me and all say what luck I had to get into this area. I am sure I will never give this place up willingly, I'm in it for the long haul.

I'm settling in quite well, better than I had anticipated, and have now completed furnishing my new place. Very happy that so much just came to me from other people and that I was able to buy a few things new rather than have a complete mish mash of pre-loved stuff. It's uncanny the way things have manifested - sometimes I think one day "I'd like a red throw rug for my couch" and the next day spotlight accidentally charges me only $5 ! for a 100% cotton gorgeous throw that matches my colour scheme. (Black, mustard and a deep red in the lounge room). Or I wanted some outdoor furniture. Spent a few hours helping a peer set up a wellness recovery action plan and in return she bought new outdoor furniture for me! Got some cushions from BigW for $3.75 each and then another from spotlight and they turned out to be made of the same fabric ... things just falling into place. And $$ gifts from a couple of unexpected sources too.

Some glitches along the way but little wins most days. e.g. When I changed my address my car insurance went down. And the glitches are ironed out fairly easily.

I've had more support worker time over the recent weeks but I'm still spending most of it running around town sorting things out re the move. And one thing after another comes up when I'm at home. So I haven't been getting the 'me time' mid-afternoon that has been in my routine for a long time, let alone free time to do things like be on the forums.

I do miss everyone here but it's been good for me to put the focus on some other things, like increased involvement with the local disability alliance. I'm doing some voluntary jobs for them as well as in a couple of support groups, and was recently asked to be on an interview panel for a job that came up, which was a huge honour but I had to decline. In the process of that I wrote to the EO of the group and told him what my steps towards employment might look like and he wants to have a meeting with me. Who knows what's around the corner - possibly some paid work much sooner than I had imagined, but I know I need to ease into it, not take a plunge. I also need more IT skills to even do admin type work.

That's probably enough of a rave from me for now, an update for anyone interested.

Sending greetings also to the many others I know here. Some but not all : @Anastasia @Angels333 @Faith-and-Hope @Appleblossom @Meowmy @Snowie @Sans911 @Owlunar @Exoplanet @CheerBear @Former-Member @Jacques @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Jupiter @Former-Member @TideisTurning @Former-Member @Judi9877 and so many more I could list here.

Take care everyone and stay kind xoxo

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth 😄💖

It really sounds as though you have a lot going your way ... finally some good fortune. You certainly deserve it, and I am so pleased for you.

You will always be very welcome, any and every time you find your way back here. There would be connections you've made here over the years, which will never be broken. You have made a major contribution here, and I applaud you for that.

Its now time to move on to new things and spend more time on your own needs. The reason you can do this is because you have been so brave and consistent in turning your life around for the better.

Of course we will all miss you when you are not around, but will always appreciate seeing you around when you are able.

Much love and admiration for you.

Emelia 🌷

Oh wow @eth ..... that is sounding fantastic, and what a welcome to your new place after the struggles of recent and not-so-recent times ...... ❤️

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth Glad to hear from you.

Thanks for your thoughts & support.

No, there have been no other or better options (Re: Jobs) - So no improvement in the situation.

It's actually costing & losing me a lot of $$ to do that driving (unpaid), to work there.

More hours would mean higher costs - A No-Win Situation (not workable).

The only Update is that since informing them that the Amount of Driving (400Km in one week/ 100Km per day) was Not Sustainable, especially my not being paid any $ for my Kms -

- My Shifts & Working Hours have been cut.

- I've lost all of my Supposedly On-Going Shifts/ Clients.

- I've been Reduced to 6 hours work, for all of next week.

All the Best,

Adge
