A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Hello lovely @eth and everyone

If it us DBT or CBT,

I believe it may be covered. My sons therapist works with him with it rather than the group in the hospital as he struggles in a group environment. Perhaps an option closer to home?

Enjoy the farm, that really does sound amazing. Oh to get away anywhere really. Love and hugs always 💞

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth

Thanks for the tag 😊

I have done group therapy work through a private mental hospital, after I had a short stay there as a patient. The topic was Acceptance and Committment Therapy. I didn't mind it, but didn't love it. I respond better Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I did enjoy the group setting though. I attended groups during my hoapital

stay, so sort of knew what to expect I'm the outpatient groups.

I do hope your NDIS funds can go towards it. Or you could look into private hospital cover that includes psychiatry, with a short 'waiting period'. It may work out cheaper than the $300 per session. How many weeks does the group therapy go for?

Enjoy your time away at the farm with your brother this weekend. I hope the weather is kind to you.

@Judi9877

Thank you for your tag and post. It can take a while to get to know everyone in the community, and people drop in and out, so it is not easy to know everyone well. I have noticed your caring posts. Am also in Melb lockdown. An important bottom line with MH issue is housing security. SOrry you are being tossed around on that one.

Take Good care

@WIP @Anastasia @eth

I have done different groups on and off over the years. I am old school. I paid for them in 1980s and 1990s. They included meditations, self development, primal therapy and psychodrama. I also have quals, and run groups, so I am no longer keen on paying top dollar and even question the rates charged by a lot of practitioners/ organisations. Enuff said for now. STay Safe and Take Care All

@eth Enjoy the farm.

Re: A long rave

Thanks @Anastasia @WIP @Appleblossom I don't know any of the details yet. Had another busy afternoon. Will look into it sunday or monday. WIP if it's not covered by NDIS I won't be doing it. It's not a toss up between paying for it myself vs getting private health insurance - I can't afford either.

I've done CBT courses and mindfulness training before so not looking to do them again. Not sure what else there is yet.

Hearing you about the charges these days Apple. I'm the same about massage therapy - I used to charge $25 per hour for people on low income - no-one does that these days.

Take care all.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth

I know this is very late but I wanted to get back to you about the respite program. I was doing mine through the mental health fellowship. It has a different name in my state. In yours I think it is One Door. https://www.onedoor.org.au
I looked on their webpages and I couldn't find what I was looking for. I then looked at my states site and saw that info isn't on it either currently since the change to ndis. I think a phone call would work it out pretty quickly. The were called short breaks when I did them.

I hope your ndis will cover the hospital group if you want to go. I'm not sure when you'll get this but I hope you're travelling ok when you do. 💜🤗

Re: A long rave

Hi @Teej @Shaz51 @Appleblossom @Adge @Anastasia @Appleblossom @WIP and others who replied to me over the weekend. I'm sorry to say I typed a long response to people's support and advice yesterday and it wouldn't post to the thread. Today it has disappeared. I don't have the capacity to re-do it today. Suffice to say I'm really grateful and now have some more things to research about day group programs and potential accommodation resources.

I rang the clinic where the day groups happen yesterday and found out that the wait list for an intake assessment is up to Feb next year. The first step is to get a referral from my psychiatrist, which I will do. Then I can decide closer to the time if I want to proceed. And they're $102 each for a half day, not over $300 as my psychologist thought. That's good but if it's weekly at least one session it's still too much out of my pension. But they said there is a way to do it on NDIS funds, but that will be discussed at the intake assessment (which is free). As will the actual details of the program content. Another concern I had is that I know I respond adversely to being in a group where some people have unpredictable/inappropriate behaviours. They reassured me that it's outpatients only and they only admit people who can 'maintain their composure'.

I also went out in the afternoon with one of my support workers and we spent some time talking about organisations to check out that might have affordable accommodation options. Sitting at the beach which was windy and cool but beautiful nevertheless. So I have several leads to follow up about that.

Started the day with some colouring mandala which I'm doing every day lately, then raked the back yard and took my rubbish out. On my daily routine which I rarely stick to the first thing is to try and do one domestic job before I come online.

Have a couple of zoom meetings today with the disability alliance and some reading to do before the first one so won't be here for long just now, but this week is quieter than the last two so I might be around a bit more.

@Emelia8 and @outlander you've both been on my mind and I hope the days are improving for you.

@Judi9877 @Bunniekins @Maggie @Angels333 @Bezak482 thanks for the tags. I'll go read your posts now.

Hope my post gets through this time. Have a positive and productive day all.

Stay safe and stay kind xx

My groceries just arrived so will have to catch up on notifications later after all.
