A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Hi @Exoplanet @Angels333 @outlander @Sans911 and anyone reading.

@Bunniekins you sounded cosy on your cool day. Weather here is magnificent. I do sit in my chair in my long oversized fluffy dressing gown when it is cold. I live in that thing in winter. For now though, it's still sun almost every day, warm but not hot, with a cool breeze quite often. It's still sleeveless and sandals weather. Got out in it on my courtyard for my cereal this morning. Lovely. Thank you so much for missing me and for being understanding while I needed the time away. I see no selfishness in what you said, just love. Have you had any nice walks lately? Love to you.

@MDT cheers for the nice words, mate. Always good to see you around as well. Who is the pig-man with the gun in your avatar?!!

@Zoe7 hugs back to you!

@eth yes, there must be so many of us having waves of alternating hope and fear. Fear of the unknown, hope for a better future rising from the ashes of this pandemic.

You have mentioned here and elsewhere the latest news about your psychologist situation. About having to check out new names on the list your current psych will be giving you, I would look them up on Google search and read some or all of what I found there, for any clues about who they might be as a person, and of their qualifications, areas of specialty and experience.

I once looked up a psych I was seriously considering seeing, and found she and her husband had been charged with running a scam business operation together. She was still practicing while that was going through. Can't remember what the scam was exactly. It was helpful to know to avoid her!

That's just an odd tangent. I know anyone your psych recommends is likely to be fairly good, or better. You are wise to be philosophical about things that can't be changed. Perhaps deep trauma work is not what is best to be doing at this time. I do understand about feeling the loss though. It would be awful to lose my psychologist, the first one I've ever really felt helpful and uplifting. And I only see her about every five weeks.

Those big bird pictures you posted are magnificent!

It warms my heart to know you have such a wonderful group of people with you, all together in this lock-down. I've read you telling of so many special times you've had together, delicious and enviable meals you've shared, since you moved from up north to where you are now. ox

@Adge also loving your little bird images. Nice to know you have such lovely companions. Birdsong is so comforting to me. It often lifts my spirit. I didn't know cockatoos and large parrots lived so long! 'Stuck In The Middle With You' is an ace song. An old favourite.

@Shaz51 hugs my ScotIrish sister. I've done a little stay at home photography too just lately. Would love to see anything you'd like to post some images here.

@Owlunar just catching up on tagged posts here and elsewhere on the forum is a challenge when I'm not here for a lot of time every day, as I used to be. There are seven pages of posts to catch up with here today! Would like to respond to more posts than is wise for me at the moment. As you said though, there's no need for pressure on ourselves to read and write more than we can, even when tagged.

Relate too to what you said about taking things one day at a time. That's a helpful thing to remember when we are dealing with mental health issues at the best of times. Now it seems even more in order. I am tending to do that, but imaginings of the future crop up in my mind anyway with dread, at one or more moments each day. I still haven't really caught up to where we are in the world now. It's like I wake up every day to the old world I was used to. Only after a few minutes I then remember that I'm in a new one now.

Glad your headache has passed. Your inspiration to do some tidy-up and cleaning around your home sounds like it brought some satisfaction. I find it so hard to do anything domestic but feel so good when I do, especially when I do it well. Well wishes.

My notifications have grown even more while I've been drafting this post. But I must take a break now and respond later. This post has taken me more than an hour!

Re: A long rave

Hi again @Mazarita I often do such a long post that I miss people in real time.

No pressure at all to be here more. Nice to see you pop in now and then tho'.

Thanks for your understanding and thoughtful words. Yes planning to research potential new psych's online and also ring around. Hoping my GP will have information about some or even one of them too.

Your courtyard sounds a lovely place to be at the moment - and your weather sounds perfect. Really heading into autumn here - last night it was down to 11 and felt very cold. Time for an extra blanket and dig out the trakky dacks and dressing gown. Might even have a go at making some house slippers from rag-yarn. I have plenty of material I can cut up for the yarn, and a nice big hook somewhere.

Hope you have a really peaceful day.

Hi and peace to you too @Zoe7 How are you doing? Getting the rest you needed?

Hello @Adge @Shaz51 @Sans911 @Appleblossom @outlander and anyone else who might be here sometime today.

Take care and stay kind everyone xoxo

Re: A long rave

Yes I am @eth and it has been lovely to stop and do relatively nothing for a few days. I have slept and watched a lot of tv. There has been a Midsomer Murders marathon on over the Easter period so I have had that going non-stop for 2 days. Taking a break from it today and watching some ABC shows I recorded. I do have to go to the supermarket later as I forgot a few things yesterday but that won't take long. If I have some energy later today I am going to start preparing my loungeroom for painting - lots of little bits to patch and then sand, walls to wash, furniture to move and then I can paint. It is a job I started over 3 years ago so finally I might be able to finish it.
