A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Hello @Molliex @Sans911 @Mazarita

Dear @eth

Great to hear your positives are outweighing fear and dissociation and trauma issues. You seem well on the road to recovery, though I know its often a few steps back at times. On You for dealing with driving etc.

Re: A long rave

Thanks a lot for your comments @Appleblossom Wondering whether you've seen this Recovery Model that I shared last year. I see recovery as being quite different from cure as such. I do feel like I'm managing better a lot of the time - less dark days for sure - but probably a big part of that is also quite a cocktail of meds and a lot more supports than I used to have. And living where it's noticed immediately if I'm withdrawing or isolating myself - the price of that being accountability where sometimes I'd rather not be so visible (to bro and sil in particular).

Hoping things are rolling along smoothly for you. You also set a good example of getting out there in the world despite challenges. I admire your efforts. Take care xx

Re: A long rave

thanks for the update @eth it sounds like your doing really well with your driving and also with managing your mh too. Its really great that the adrenaline etc didn't cause any dissociation or anything.

we have some pretty dangerous intersections and some roundabouts here. sometimes its like playing Russian roulette! so can understand how you might've been feeling.

Re: A long rave

Hi all.

@eth so pleased to read about your prize for your stories that you read out to an audience. Good on you for your fine plans to become more involved in teaching, speaking and working in mental health. Blessings on all you hope for. Glad too to hear of your driving lessons going well. Tai chi as well! More pleasure would be good for so many of us. I find moments of it during most days, though still struggling with physical health especially. More about that further on.

@Wanderer, I always like hearing good news about creativity. You've got me wanting to learn more about your book. Poetry is dear to my heart as well.

Hi to @Shaz51, @outlander, @Zoe7, @CheerBear, @Exoplanet, @Bunniekins, @Former-Member, @Sans911, @Maggie, @Molliex, @Former-Member and everyone reading.

This week I was in hospital from Monday to Wednesday to have a test. It's usually a day procedure but the preparation for it has made me very ill in the past, so it was decided I would have a two-night stay to put me on a drip and do the preparation a bit differently.

For the first time out of all my many hospital stays over the years, I was allotted a room to myself! My social anxiety flares up when sharing hospital rooms with other people, all strangers. In general I tend to be very anxious in hospital, and have even checked myself out, still ill, on two occasions because the anxiety got too much.

Anyway, because of the private room the first 24-36 hours were fine this time. I was even chatting, joking and laughing with nurses when they came in. But on the day of the actual test everything went very pear-shaped. My drip chart was not properly filed at the hospital that day and I ended up (as I have before) being badly dehydrated by the time they finally took me for the procedure. I get very sick in this state. I'd also become very upset, anxious and cried in the leadup to the procedure, which required I be put under anaesthetic.

They discharged me and I felt okay for the rest of the afternoon and evening. But later in the evening I felt the headache coming back, getting worse and worse until I was vomiting. Sick as a dog all night. I woke C (my companion) around 4am and asked him to take care of me as I had deteriorated a lot by then. I was in so much pain I couldn't put my head on a pillow all night. The pressure on my head when I lie down makes a headache like that even worse. I eventually got a couple of hours sleep sitting up in my armchair with a neck pillow keeping my head from resting against anything.

Mercifully I started to feel better after that, as night was turning to day. As dawn happened, I found myself truly on the mend. This has happened to me over and over again in my life when I've been acutely ill: at dusk or dawn I often get much better. Tonight I hope to get some good chunks of sleep in my own bed.

Aside from this week's drama, I've not been well in general and have three specialist appointments coming up in the next few weeks. So far all tests have been okay, which is great. But hopefully there'll be some answers and effective treatments with my various troubling symptoms over the past six months.

Still I've been doing a little film-making (two completed so far this year). I'm also learning Spanish on an app, something I can do when all I can get myself to do is sit in my armchair.

Hope today is starting gently for you all and has some good moments in it as it unfolds.

Lovely to hear from you again @Mazarita , tho' I'm really feeling for you with all that's happening physically. Hoping you get some clear results and appropriate treatment that gives you relief out of all the procedures and specialist appointments. And that you're able to get some more pain-free rest in this morning - maybe you're sleeping now. The combination of anaesthetic hangover and extreme dehydration - no wonder you had such a full-on headache.

Wonderful to hear that you are finding moments of pleasure, and that your video making continues. Really hope we get to catch up in real time sometime soon xx

With the training and involvement with the disability alliance I am focussed on working with people with all sorts of disability, not only mental health. I am clear on that I don't want my world to be solely about mh. I was invited to be a peer mentor but that would be only with mh people and I'm not feeling at a stage where I could do that irl. Very different from doing it anonymously on-line with strong support of moderators and community managers - which I really enjoy. I'm finding it hard to put into words what I feel the difference would be. Something about getting so involved in the other person's 'stuff' that I don't meet my own needs and not being able to step away or put a response on hold while I think about it when I need to. The training days I want to do are on facilitation of workshops and presentations one day and community building on the other day. I just have to sort out transport to be able to do them as they're on down the coast a bit - 2 hr trip by bus and train which I couldn't do by myself anyway. Still can't even get to the station unaided let alone find the venue at the other end. Hoping someone from the group will decide to drive down.

My support worker for today has cancelled again so I'll be around a bit today. I know she's sick with cold symptoms and doesn't want to risk spreading anything, but with her cancelling last Friday too it means I've only been able to get out twice each week and am going a bit stir crazy ... literally cabin fever. And really missing tai chi too. Luckily I did a bigger shop last time so can get through til next Tuesday when I next have a sw. Must go and check all my meds in case I need to get to the chemist before then. Bro is away and sil is really busy with work, studio management and more. Her Mum (next door) had a bad accident a few days ago - tripped while carrying a kettle full of boiling water. Has burnt her leg so badly that she will need a skin graft which means lots of trips to the burns unit 2 hours away. Even with all that going on, I know sil will pick something up for me if I really need it.

Hoping to chat with people today. Take care all xx
