A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita :), Claire @outlander {sorry to hear you needed a hug, I'll give you one now whether you need one or not 🙂 }, @CheerBear {sorry to hear your having some housing hic-ups, think I'll give you a hug too!}, @eth {good luck with quitting! :)}, @Shaz51 {I hope your health is going ok, since your high iron tests}, @Faith-and-Hope {sorry to hear your struggling, another hug for you too!}, and everybody

I seem to have missed a day, I wonder what happened to Friday? Because I thought today was Friday? My logic tells me it was yesterday and I actually did some more washing 🙂 Perhaps it was Thursday I missed, . . I've missed a day somewhere.

It rained a little yesterday which was lovely, it was cool and not only are there puddles in the driveway, there's a puddle in the dam! 😄 ! I've caught up with the dishes 🙂 and nearly gotten there with the washing {just a few dog blankets and bits and bobs left}.

I reckon I probably have that avoidance personality thing too Mazy, the 'titles' help you understand I think - so this new diagnosis may help you understand a little more about your self and be useful in finding other ways to manage your sysmptoms. It might just be a good thing 🙂

Well, I hope everyone gets a reason to smile today 🙂

Niqua

Good morning everyone

Hiya @Former-Member. Thank you for the hugs. They are always appreciated and gave me a smile 🙂 Well done to you on catching up on some chores! Great to hear there has been some rain about for you. It's rained lots here over the last week which has sent the garden into a growing frenzy. I just had a coffee out there and swear I can see the tomato plants growing in front of my eyes

Hope your day ahead is a good one for you!

Good luck today @eth You are awesome!

@Mazarita I was up and about early this morning (no surprises there) but I sat with a huge group of sparrows this morning. The apricot tree (with a plum tree above it) is right next to my morning coffee spot and the apricots are getting bigger and more juicy looking every day. The birds are loving them I took this to share here this morning as it is my view often when I am here on this thread.

Hi to everyone else passing by. Hope there is something that feels good for you in today

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, very best wishes for your quitting day. You rock that you are doing this!

Hi Niqua, good to get a longer message from you this morning. I sometimes get confused about days too. That's usually when I sleep too much during the day and my sense of 'clock' gets out of whack. Weird feeling.

Good to hear your dam has caught some water. We had a big storm pass through yesterday, it woke me out of daytime sleep. Fortunately we missed the big lightning cracks here but there was very ominous thumder from either side of us , torrential rain and high wind. Sunny so far today.

So awesome that you have caught up on the dishes and nearly there with washing too. I am in full feral mode at the moment.

I hope you get a reason for many smiles today, Niqua. @Former-Member

Good morning, @CheerBear, I love your apricot tree, and the little purple flowers in the picture too. Pity you are competing with the birds for the fruit, but I guess that's the way of nature. Thanks so much for posting your lovely pictures in here for us all to enjoy.

Good morning, @outlander, hope you are feeling a little better this morning. If not, I hope you feel a bit better very soon. More hugs headed your way from me too.

I have been having trouble processing my additional diagnosis, including a breakdown into tears last night (a rarity with me these days, though I used to cry rivers). Lots of pesky thoughts about it, and frankly some feeling sorry for myself about it too. But, I guess it's just a label in the end. A quite accurate one in some ways (from my reading). And fairly accurate to my experience since infancy. Being so easy to identify for me, it strikes home a bit hard too, with the ring of truth. Truth is not always a happy experience but I guess I'll get over it before too long.

Hi to everyone reading. Hope your day goes okay, hopefully better!

Re: A long rave

Sending you big hugs for the tricky feelings this is bringing up for you @Mazarita. It's really understandable. Diagnosis stuff can be seem so cold and harsh about things that are really deep inside that maybe need the opposite of cold and harsh (I think). I find it painful. Hopefully it can help identify areas that you can work with over time if you'd like. Tough, but brave ❤

Re: A long rave

Thanks for the hugs and kind feelings, @CheerBear. My psych was kind about it too. It's just that I now have to live with this thing. Although part of me is thinking I won't bring it up again and it might blow over (lol, , how 'avoidant' is that?!) Dr Google hasn't helped in some ways because the condition is described as intractable, something that tends to show up very early in life (even infancy), and tends to be hard to shift over the long haul too. So what's the point of it as a diagnosis, I ask? Another part of me thinks I've just hung around psychiatrists and psychologists too much, and they tend to give you some clinical name or other if you keep talking about all the things that bother you.

But enough of that for now!

What's happening with you today, CB?

Re: A long rave

I did some reading when you first mentioned it @Mazarita and got some heart sinky feelings at it. I can imagine the feelings it may bring for you personally. I question a lot of diagnoses and have some pretty maybe not so totally helpful for everyone opinions on them. I can see how it feels you have to live with it now, but really you've already been living with it all along. And you're pretty great just as you are (I reckon and I have a sneaking suspicion I wouldn't be the only one to say that).

"Phobic avoidance" was written in one of the letters of mine - with you there 😉

Today I have a bucketload of housework this morning then the LF and I are heading out for the afternoon. It started as a lovely sunshine morning but has turned a bit now 😞

How about you?

Re: A long rave

Boo to the disappearance of the sun, @CheerBear, may it shine forth again on you all today! Perhaps you could bottle some of your house cleaning energy and send it this way.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I have been living with it, it seems. That was partly the reason for the tears last night too, just feeling sorry for myself! Thanks for the vote of confidence in me however I'm labelled. You rock, dear sister!

Re: A long rave

Haha gotta find that cleaning energy first @Mazarita! In saying that, I guess I can no longer avoid the dishes and better try to hunt 😉

Big loves to you Maz ❤ Catch you later 😊
