A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Hi All I hope you're okay.

I'm having a different kind of week with Mr Angels home on annual leave. We finished the house painting and that was good.

Unfortunately I seem to have some sort of flu that has left me with an upset stomach and a migraine.

I'm still struggling with SH but it's better with Mr Angels home. I have DBT tomorrow and hopefully I can see everyone's tie dye shirts and see how they turned out. For those that missed it I organised a tie dye mindfulness activity last Thursday with my DBT group.

Anyway I hope you all have a nice evening

Got really upset tonight. Its really upset me that i didnt get explained how the payments will change. Its cause i dont know the system & am scared about entering it.

Think im overdoing it this end too.

Lots of crying tonight. Have to wait for my meds to kick in to sleep. Its a combination of things upsetting me. Im trying so hard. Have to wait til Mon to explain it to Psychologist & dr.

I trust this Psychologist but dr doesnt even know me. Altho they know im on a dsp. Its scary cause the dva payments are foreign to me. Im going out of my comfort zone which is making me feel insecure. I only found out today that payments will switch. Just overwhelmes me cause its the unknown.

So far my dealings with anyone in dva have been pos tho so thats reassuring.

I just didnt expect to get so overwelmed thats all. Im used to Centrelink & reporting any earnings. Its simple. I know the dva is more secure for me. Its also that this really should have happened after i was released from army but i was only 19 & now im 55. Theres been a hole messed up life inbetween now. Thats whats confusing.

Its hard going back to that time. It keeps upsetting me cause i lost everything.

I feel like my life keeps changing since i moved & its like out of my control.

I dont know where im heading.

I might try to ph psychologist tomorrow. Hes a good guy & i know he will talk to me

Sorry to burden u all with this but i dont know anyone whos been down this path to talk to. Maybe i should get in touch with mates4mates or something like that

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Bunniekins I wanted to reach out to you as I've read your posts elsewhere from yesterday and overnight. I want you to know that you can talk to me about what's going on if you want to. I have bipolar 1 (and other things) and am really familiar with that feeling that everything is accelerating. The conflict between recognising that it's happening, maintaining insight, and just wanting to fly and ride the high. So I'm here for you if you want me to be. Take care.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Former-Member @Appleblossom @Shaz51 @Angels333 @saturnzoon @cutiepiekitty @Scarecrowe

Sending warm wishes and the hope that today is one of the better ones and is starting gently.

@Former-Member in no way are you a burden here. Sharing here can not only mean you find some support, but also can help clarify things in your mind about what's going on. That's what we're here for. You're not alone now that you have us here. Hope you are able to get some rest today. Maybe jot down some notes to take to the new GP about what you are going through emotionally and mentally. The more you are able to tell them, the better they can help you. Take care today my friend.

@Former-Member @saturnzoon Re centrelink paperwork - if I get too stressed over it or can't do what they want online I go to their office and get them to do it for/with me. It does take longer as you usually have to wait a while to see them, but it makes things easier to jump through their hoops. I believe they are being discriminatory expecting everyone to be able to do these things online and I don't hold back on telling them why I can't do it - it's one place where I let my disabilities show in all their glory in order to get the help I deserve. Also I take notes during phone calls and you can get a receipt number for the call at the end, so you can go back and prove it happened if you ever need to.

@cutiepiekitty I hope you had a better night.

@Appleblossom I plan to get sil or bro to park my car on the street the night before so I don't have to try to get it out of our blind driveway on busy road. Already having lots of 'what if thinking' about the lessons but doing my best to take a deep breath and let go of them when they arise. No amount of energy spent on that stuff in advance is going to change what actually happens on the day. Knowing that doesn't stop it from happening tho'!

@Angels333 seeing the results of the activity you organised will be a really good feeling for you I reckon. I am sure they will look amazing. Good on you for doing it.

Hugs back atcha @Shaz51 hope the kidney stone episode has passed.

Today I have a GP appointment this morning with my support worker (usually don't have anyone on a Thursday) and no other comitments later which is good.

Yesterday afternoon there was another drama with another one of the women in the womens group I joined (offline) - more alarm for others in the group who are simply not equiped to deal with this sort of thing. The group is not only for people with mh challenges and in no way set up for crisis management ... meant to be just a nice safe way to meet new people and do some fun activities. Don't get me wrong, I do want to support as much as I can, but am finding I also need to have some boundaries about how involved I get in these situations because of how it affects my MH and because I am so new to the group. I am clear that I do not want to be put in the position of being the go-to person for people in crisis from that group. Have shared already with the group a lot of resources and ph numbers, including chat and crisis lines, and also a lot of info about self-care activities. I have now talked with the administrators and they are going to work on guidelines and a 'mission statement' for new people to see while they are deciding whether to join the group.

Ok that's my rave for today !

On a positive note I emailed a few potential new coordinators of NDIS supports yesterday morning and have already heard back from 2 of them. Have to bite the bullet and ring NDIS to find out what I have to do to change CoS at their end, because CoS invoices go directly to the NDIS and not through my plan manager and I need to end one service agreement (with the old CoS) and do a new one with new CoS - not sure if they can overlap or not.

With all the above, plus looming driving lessons and a bunch of other stuff going on in my life I am feeling like I am juggling with too many balls in the air!

Hoping to find my centre again with quiet time this afternoon. Plus all supports for tomorrow have been cancelled (not by me) so I've got some space then too.

Have a calm day if possible everyone and if not ... remember to breathe!
