A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita @CheerBear @Shaz51 hope your days have gotten off to a good start. Mine stretches out before me with no definite plans. Just chores which I'm in the habit of dodging - dishes, washing, window cleaning, maybe shopping. At least I'll do a shopping list including ingredients for a birthday cake for bro and sil - their birthdays are only a day apart. I do enjoy cooking when it's too share with others.

@Mazarita sorry to hear they only fixed one tooth for you. And that you haven't been getting your beach walk but yay for you having a good long walk yesterday. How did you go with seeing the Dr about your results from the procedure you had done?

We went down to the beach yesterday to see how much of a mess the supercars have left behind and it looks horrendous. Huge stadiums and heaps of metal fencing everywhere where there used to be parks and beautiful beachfront walks. Tragic what our council and government approved there for the sake of the $$.

Hello Mazy @Mazarita, Claire @outlander, @CheerBear, @Shaz51, @Faith-and-Hope and Everyone

I'm back, got back at midnight last night and just went straight to bed. The Center of my Universe has gat a charming virus going around and they shared it with me. I didn't realize it was the bug I just feel incredibly tired, couldn't keep my eyes open tired {not reall good for driving 4-5 hours}. I actually pulled up, found an overnight camp spot, but it was like a car park and it was full, so I just pulled up on the road opposite it. I knew for the critters sake I had to stop. Grabbed my pillows went to the back of the car and then I was ill {an Ah Ha moment} - I knew for the critters sake I had to have a nap, but it was the worst spot for it; the street lights were coming straight into the back of the car, and there were people everywhere! I kind of felt weak, I just had to sleep, left eh back of the car wide open, the young fella could have gotten out {his chain is quiet long}, and just crawled in - I still had to force myself to keep my eyes shut and it took me a while to get into sllep. But I did, and I woke back up and I got back home 🙂 It's going to be a real 'take it easy' day today.

Glad you've got 1 tooth sorted out Mazy, I can't believe our public dental system - what they have to wait for the other one to have a toxic absess before they can do anything with it?!? Good old salt water helps keeps those absesses in check for a bit.

Where abouts are you Cheerbear? {you don't have to say} I'd like to go somewhere where they're still knitting blankets - it's gettitng a bit warm here. My Grandmother used to do lace-work, with a needle hook so tiny that if it went into your thumb it was really hard to get it out because of the hook! I would love to see your finished blanket too, if you put a pic up 🙂

I hope the home-front's getting a little calmer Claire Are they officially out yet? I hope you bugs and lungs and feet and everythig are ok too!?! I was aching a fair bit last night, but I thought it was just every day stuff - maybe that's a bonus for getting older and having arthritus - you don't realize your sick until your really sick 🙂

Oh @eth, I'm sorry to hear what they did. It's depressing what human beings do for fun - you can't drop a ciggerette butt on the sidewalk - that's littering; but you can destroy an entire beach for a car show - that's important entertainment!

Well, I'm buggered, but it's good to be back.

Love to you all

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, it's so good that you are inspired by cooking. A nice reason to do it with their birthdays. It's a special feeling when someone bakes you a birthday cake. What kind of cakes do you think you might make? Sounds awful what's been left behind by the supercars. Are they going to remove it? If so, I hope it's soon. Always good to hear from you, sister.

Hi @Former-Member. Niqua, sorry you've been hit with the virus. That drive home sounds a bit delirious, thank goodness you and the critters got there okay. Hope you are sleeping well now and take it easy with yourself tomorrow too. Love to you.

Hi @Shaz51, scottish sister. How have you been? I hope your health has been treating you as kindly as possible. Hugs.

Hi @outlander, it's a relief to hear your mum and her partner and siblings are out of the house now. I'm guessing that means it's just you and your pop now. Sorry to hear there are still troubles, hugs for the tough things you go through.

Today started unable to wake as usual, hours trying to rouse myself enough to dress. Art group was today and the way I was feeling I was sure I wouldn't make it. But right at the time I was due to leave, I found myself just doing it: washing, dressing and getting backpack ready for the day. I walked out the door just as a few drops of rain started to fall. By the time I got to the bus stop the rain was sheeting! Even in the bus shelter I got wet and the wind was trying to blow my dress over my head. But I kept going and got to art group even a bit early. That was great as usual, continued with some detailed colouring-in I'd started earlier, and chatted to two nice women, we were the only ones there.

Then back out and walking, this time no rain. Grabbed a bite to eat and jumped on another bus to my psychologist appointment, pretty much just in time there too. A good session, felt I was making progress. I talked about things that often trouble me but that I don't write on the forum, or talk about to anyone else I think. After that, out and walking again, no rain, and bussed it back to my friend's place, where I was going to help her with an application for a property she was looking at today. But the place was no good, so no need for that. Instead we had our usual chat, often deep, sometimes silly. Then C came around to give me a lift home. And now here. Long raving about daily life, as is my wont.

Hi @everyone, hope the rest of the night is kind, and tomorrow brings good things too.

Re: A long rave

Hello Mazy @Mazarita 🙂 Claire @outlander 🙂 @Shaz51 @Faith-and-Hope @CheerBear {so glad I caught your unbirthday on the actual day :D}, @eth and everybody 🙂

The drive home was a bit delirious 🙂 but I've got to say I'm grateful I'm an individual who drives around with a bed in the back of their Ute, so I was able to just stop and sleep for a couple of hours!;)! . . . and 1 that has an American Staffy hooked up on a chain, who didn't once jump out, but sat up looking very strong and alert while I slept !:)!

I'm feeling much better today 🙂 I've woken earlier than unusual - but that's to be expected considering I slept most of yesterday . . . so the sleep pattern might need a little conscious re-setting; but I'm just glad it didn't turn into a full on stomach bug with all the convulsive trimmings!

The Center of my Universe is running at it's usual hurricane pace! I think my child and their partner are exhausted in every way, physically, emotionally {they've had sick kids, income cuts, teenage drama's - generally the modern young big family stuff}, socially {they don't get much time for socializing, so they make themselves tireder making time for it!}. The stress of keeping up that pace takes it's toll.

Out of the mouth of a babe I heard my youngest grandgirl mentioning an argument between my child and thier partner, I remembered my child had mentioned an argument during a phone call one night; hearing it from my youngest grandgirl so innocently made me think that argument may have been a bit of a big deal. My child and thier partner are obviously travelling along a rocky path right now.

I think it's a real sign when partners decide to argue in a 'public' manner, and they chose to do that while I was there; not loud or physical, but obvious. It's like a way of allowing an opening for others to help by saying something - it is public, like in a longue room; so it's open to everyone there to add to the conversation; and yet it's private, what's being said - and you know it's more like a challenge; it's their home they can say what they like . . . but even in a home, particularly a large family home, there are 'public' places and that's why I see it as a sign.

But I didn't get involved, I helped out with some groceries and a few other items. I even cooked dinner one night! That's me really, really trying to help - I haven't cooked dinner there for years!! 😄 My child {who got the bug the night I went down, but like me after a day of sleeping got a bit better - as did my youngest grandgirl who got it the night I left} and I went to a Super second hand store {which I love! :D} and I found a few treasures there! I got my childs household one of those automatic floor sweepers . . . and it works! 😄 Though I don't know how long it will last with the littlest grandboy {who had the bug the worst, even ended up in hospital for a check up, though not admitted} poking at it {now that he's feeling better :D}.

I wonder if this difficulty rousing yourself has anything to do with this virus going around? it can be difficult realizing your coming down with a bug when you have everyday 'symptoms' anyhow. Art group and even walks on the beach would probably be great places to catch it 😉 Hope that's not the case and it's just everyday symptoms {not that I'm belittling those symptoms at all, just hoping there's no extras}.

Good on you for 'just doing it', letting a bit of auto-pilot kick in and getting out, despite the weather, to Art, your psychologist and your friends It got you walking . . . in the rain no less!, arriving early!, continuing an art project, a conversation with a couple of nice women, a bit of fair weather walking, a bite to eat whilst out! Woo Hoo!, travelling on a bus, arriving on time, making progess in a good session with your psychologist {which I think is an inspiration to others, it shows that if you persevere and find the right match psychology may be an avenue that helps maintain an individuals 'ways'}, more fair weather walking, another bus trip, a visit to a friend!, conversation, enjoyment!!! 😄 You've done well! 😄

I think I'm up for a run into town, check the Post Office, go to the library and re-stock my entertainment and take this poor young fella for a slow and steady walk in the forest {he didn't get one yesterday and we don't go for walks at the Center, so it's been 5 days!!!}. I've got dishes in my sink that whisper to me every time I go near the kettle for a cuppa and the washing machine is full and has the corners of a few clothes poking over the edges, then there's the car that needs unpacking and the rubbish that needs putting into the back to drop off, next trip into town. 😄 So I suppose I ought to get off of here and do some of that 😉

Lots of Love to you Mazy, Claire and all

Re: A long rave

Hi Niqua, again your resourcefulness and ingenuity helps you, along with the critters, who I love especially because they care for you too.

Awesome that you woke feeling better! I marvel at how parents with families can manage with the extreme stresses that can be involved. I'm sorry to hear of the argument, especially out of the mouth of babes. I hope the best for them, and for you. Good on you for cooking dinner. Lovely with the treasures.

I don't think I have a virus. I have been struggling with this heaviness, lethargy, fatigue, depression, whatever you call it, for a very long time. It's just getting harder and heavier as I get older it seems. I have really felt a older every year since about my late 40s, felt an overall decline. That was about the time I had the big crash into sleeping 20 hours a day (with manic music making on the computer in the slivers of other time, then crash again). At least I think that's about how it went. I can't remember most of it. I think it went on for about nine months, could have been longer. I also remember long months afterwards of dragging myself from the bed to the armchair in the loungeroom and sitting there like a zombie in front of the TV all day, or just listening to the wildlife and noise of the day outside, unable to move. Where I am now is a vast improvement on that, from my point of view, though obviously not ideal. Today, for example... after a big day out yesterday, I was asleep most of the day into the mid to late afternoon.

Thanks for the encouragement about yesterday though. The fact that there are days like that in most weeks does hearten me. And that evenings are better. Many blessings. And as I am sitting her now writing, my mood is okay.

I wonder if you got into town today. Same here with the complaining dishes. Washing remains to be done. Thank goodness I don't have a car, lol.

Love to you, Niqua.
