A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eudemonism

I totally get you. I was seeing one Psychiatrist twice a week who elephant dosed me on meds. I put on a lot of weight and ended up in an acute ward in hospital where once I told the Dr's what I was taking I was informed that the doses were too high. Could it be that you need a Medication review? Now I am on new meds but it's taken 3 years to get it right one medication made me sleep all the time. And I'm still not clear in my head. My new psychiatrist is much better, much more compassionate and he is carefull not to put me on weight gaining medication, I'm already overweight! I hope things get better for you @eudemonism and that you can find a solution to your situation it sounds horrible to have gotten to the point where you feel just a part of the system without autonomy.

Thinking of you today,

Re: A long rave

Thanks @Owlunar ,

I'm glad you have been getting good support and that it is helping you through this diffucult time. My presentation went really well, I think one of my hobbies was the main thing that interested them. I had to field several questions afterwards.

I also briefly mentioned my brother and a little of the frustration and challenges that he has thrown up. I had to do an introduction about myself and talk about what I want to do in the future.

It's definitely a relief to have it over with. 🙂

Thinking of you too @Owlunar .....

Re: A long rave

Hi @Gazza75 and thanks for your support too

That must have been an extremely exhausting presentation - talking about sensitive personal issues in public but have been draining but it sounds as if it went well

The issues with your brother are very deep and complex - I have missed some activity on line because I have been interstate and not perhaps reading as much as I would at home - from what I remember you adored your brother but he gave you a hard time growing up and he has a serious accident and needed you during his recovery - sharing all of this must hae been difficult

And telling people about your hobbies - fantastic - and fielding enquiries - well done - our hobbies are an important part of our coping with life successfully - I didn't think much of learning the piano when I was a kid - why me? There were two other kids that didn't have this thrust upon them but now - I am really glad I can play the piano - it has been something that has been a vital part of my life and I am glad of it

Good work

Re: A long rave

@Owlunar, it wasn't to bad really. It's been coming for a few months and I'd built it up in my head more than I should have. My life feels pretty mundane compared to others. I feel more relief than drained. We still have more team building things to come, but, they are on a smaller level rather than with such a large group like I had to do today.

It's been nice keeping up with you during your travels. You paint some lovely pictures with your words and it sounded like you had a well deserved holiday and warmer weather. There's defintely something magical about seeing a sunset or sunrise when your in a plane.

Sharing what I went through with my brother here has helped quite a bit. It was nice to get feedback with some of my emotions and to feel like some of what I was going through was normal. It was the most challenging experience of my life. I certainly have a different perspective on things now.

Hobbies definitely help us cope wth things. I've let mine slide a fair bit recently. The only thing I have kept up with is exercising. I wish I had some musical talent so good on you for learning the piano and also how to read music. It's a very useful skill to have. I've tried to learn the guitar and ukulele, but, don't have the dedication needed. I spend a lot of time listening to music and always enjoy finding new artists.

Thanks heaps

Gazza

Thank you for your tags @Angels333 @eth @Bunniekins

Its also great seeing so many more join this thread with eth's invitation.

I have had an apple and starting first coffee. My son and I just cleaned the stove together, which is really great, that we could quietly work in a small space and get the job done with him taking in a few new relevant ideas without defensiveness.

Interrupted as I post ///

I got quick call from ndis confirming tomorrow and my son gave me a tiny bowl of lovely scrambled farm fresh eggs.

@eudemonism good to see you here. I managed to improve my experiences of mental health serivices by reading how others made things worked for them and so I am doing much better now than when I joined the forum.

I could also get pretty upset and angry cos of all the deaths ... so I do hear you about limitations .... but hope that you get some inspiration to make it suit you better.

Have the best day possible ....

@Appleblossom

Just recently, I've been thinking about, how angry i get...

It's been going on for ages now... and I'd like to deal with it, or get prescribed something for it, because it's really quite stressful to deal with on a regular basis ... i've got plenty to be angry about-believe you me ... I've been thinking, they kind of get a kick, out of making me angry...

Hearing you Eude

@eudemonism

I know some say dont listen to doctor google, but I have found it useful, and found that one med I am on can lead to agitation and anger .... so thats the one I am cutting out first .... slow and steady. I noticed it a year ago, because I was struggling with anger more than was reasonable for current circumstances .... my pdoc agreed (I would have reduced it anyway) but it was good to know we were on the same page.

If your medical team are too lacksadaisical about your care ... start experimenting with other mental health professionals. That is how I have gradually learned ... and it has been slow ... but I am feeling much better this year. Medicine is now such a complicated thing, active involvement of the person being treated helps .... as far as I can see from all the research I have done. Nobody knows you like you.
