A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

You make smile lots @Mazarita ❤ I have sensed for a while that we share some similarities but maybe are at different stages of our journeys. You give me hope in lots of ways. I can also very much appreciate those days, of which mine came to a grinding halt when two lines appeared in the bathroom one morning haha. Probably for the best for me, as my bouncing was a bit out of control at times. Fun though ☺

I'm going on a snapdragon hunt I think. So pretty!

I can hear little feet so I'll say goobye for now. It's been great as always ❤

Hope the day is good for you both Maz and @frog (and anyone reading)!

Re: A long rave

My kids are big @CheerBear 21 & 15. I think I did better with them when they were little. Either way they are very interesting people and I love having them around. Sometimes I think ahead to when it will be just me in my little house. Well on that note I better get going. Wish you and @Mazarita a good day.

Haha, @CheerBear, yes, out of control in a big way here at times (many times!) Lol.

Have a good day, both of you, thanks for the morning chat. @frog

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

I hope you've gotten a little more peaceful rest and found some bargains on Ebay 🙂 {I do the same :)}

Today is the last day I could take the dogs into the forest as they start baiting and trapping tomorrow, but I don't think I have the fuel to do so . . . and 'pay day' is tomorrow. They only state 3 days for this procedure, but I give it a couple of weeks for a few reasons; I worry about animals moving the baits from their stations and that some may still be laying about, I worry that some animals may be poisoned and move much slower - I don't want the young fella 'learning' that the chase he loves so much is supposed to end with actually catching something, and I prefer to avoid them rolling in smelly carcasses! So I'll be looking at less natural walks like the 'off-lead' areas {which the local one involves 2 major roads on the boundaries}, good ol' lead walks {which the little fella misses out on, 'cause it's to risky that I'll get tripped up and break a hip :D}, and the local recreation areas like the sports ovals and racetracks {which I'm really not sure if it's 'legal' or not 🙂 - so there's a bit of rebellious fun :D}.

I'm thinking this might be a good time to go to a local camp spot, if he's got to be 'on-lead' then at least he could be so somewhere different and new. There's a caravan park that has camping on the edge of a Dam and allows pets, it's only an hour or so away and I've been interested in it for, oh - just years, that's all. But the thought of willingly going into a place that's going to have people in it, is something I just can't seem to bring myself to do . . . maybe I can do it for him - and I might actually enjoy the change 🙂 If I could force myself to do it once at least, and the experience wasn't entirely negative, I think it would be helpful for my grander plan of getting onto a mountain somewhere at the bottom of Australia during the Summer heat.

How I wish I could go walking on the beach like you do, I think the dogs would love it - and I'd love them loving it 😄 I really do derive so much joy from their joy, just watching the young fella run makes me laugh 🙂 I often like to lay claim to there joy, thinking it's because of what I've done or where I've taken them, but I know it's not really the case. There are dogs that never get off a chain, lucky to get a feed at all - that find joy in something as simple as a butterfly fluttering past them.

If I could give you a Christmas present it would be a big box of energy. I'd wrap it in gold laser paper, with a big gold bow. When you opened it, it would glow red and it would float out from the box and seep into your skin. It would feel warm and you would feel that warmth enter into your bloodstream and pump all throughout your body. It would settle deep in the core of your brain, where it would mix with your already present intelligence, creativity, kindness and understanding - you would feel truly alive 🙂

Of course if I had something like that, I'd have to pinch a handful for myself! I am Human, that goes without saying, I am selfish! 😄

Lots of love to you Mazy

Niqua

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita ☺ I hope your day has gone well, and those legs have behaved.

I've spent lots of my day in the garden. I had to pick up some mulch and while I was there I looked at the flowers (of course). I've wanted a lavender for a while and after chatting about flowers with you this morning, I now have one. She's a "pink" one. She smells so good and will be a nice memory in the garden. I will dig her up and take her with me, along with the herbs when we eventually leave. I also got our tomatoes (including a yellow baby roma one), corn and strawberries planted. Another pink flower/baby strawberry

So much colour-to-be in there 😊

I have decided to go out tonight and wanted to share that with you, after our coffee catch up this morning. It's with a boy (a grown up one, and I sound like I'm 15 saying it like that haha) 😮😜. That's my adventure for tonight, which I am heading out to begin in a moment.

Hope your evening is good! ❤

Re: A long rave

Sounds like a lovely day, @CheerBear

I had a little inkling your evening outing might be something along the lines of what it is. Glad you are stepping out and taking the risk. Have an interesting and enjoyable evening!

My day has involved mostly sleeping again. But as evening is falling I am feeling a bit more energy and clarity in my foggy head. Have done a personal grooming job I hate doing. Not much else achieved, but better than nothing! Just cruising into the evening now here. Doctor appointment tomorrow, so will be getting up and out then.

Hope everyone here finds some enjoyment in the evening.
