A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Hi @Shaz51, I think your post here might have happened at a time yesterday when the notifications were down on the site. That probably means no-one got the tags. I only just found it when I came online now. Good to see your messages, as always. Hope the doctor can help you next week with your iron levels.

Hi @Former-Member. Niqua. Wondering how you went with the mowing, and how you are in general. I'm writing this post as it's coming up to the pumpkin hour, which means you will be asleep. So this can be a good morning greeting for you. Sending love.

Hi @eth, how was your psychologist session? Am interested to hear your journey with the new therapy.

My daily wellbeing report is: sleepy all day, dividing snores between the armchair and the bed, with quick checks of the computer in the wakeful moments. Then a late afternoon visit to my friend. Then home again for a toastie dinner about 7pm. Since then watched a TV show, and more computer. Yes, I'm still coughing wildly at times, and I will be talking to the doctor about that next Monday. For now, I'm still slowly recovering after a health hit that pretty much flattened me. Still feeling extremely grateful my tooth is temporarily fixed, and that I am overall breathing a bit easier day by day. Some appointments happening next week to get me out of the flat and moving a bit more.

Hi @PeppiPatty, @Appleblossom, @CheerBear, @outlander and everyone, hoping you are all sleeping well now and wake up to a good new day.

Re: A long rave

dear @Mazarita

I like how you write on how you arrange your days. I feel like my days are all melding into one. My son called Mr g and I yesterday

1. Called Mum to tell her that son is vomitting and headaches.....could be his shunt/ could be food poisoning.

and we had the slightly stressful drive to his place, pick him up....casually ask him to stay the night at our place......he immediately agrees......

called oldest son to tell him what is happening.

Phonecall from Mum to tell me to make him deal with his medical stuff himself.

take him to wonderful Doctors and find out what to watch out for. Then he gets a lecture on NO sharing water bottles or glasses because of mengeccoccal disease in Western Australia.

then blooming dealing with Mr g's paranoid behaviour.

I think that he has to have some type of something now he's quit smoking.....I pretty much can't leave his side.

@Mazarita, how is your breathing ?

Re: A long rave

Sounds like it's one thing after another, @PeppiPatty. Sorry to hear about your son. The meningococcal sounds a bit scary. Mr G sounds very hard to deal with at the moment. Warm, calming hugs to you.

My breathing is better but the cough is still troubling my sleeping.

I had some good news yesterday: the lease on our rental unit is being extended another year. We had a scare earlier in the year when the owner put it briefly on the market, then changed his mind. I was worried he might do it again at the end of our lease. Or that he might want us to move because the rents are going up so much around here it's possible they'd make a lot more rent on this place if it was re-listed for new tenants. They have put the rent up for us but still within reach (and below average for an apartment like this). Anyway, feeling my housing worries lift for the next stretch of time is very welcome.

Re: A long rave

Yes, mengeccoccal is a big big worry here for people here in Western Australia.

Especially for males in the 20s age range.....thats what the Gp told our son.

I'm very proud of my youngest son in that he seems to be listening more to his body. Also that he wanted to be cared for. (phew) I feel sorry for a girlfriend he gets because this is something that she must be very aware of.

Thats annoying on your unit,,,,,,,it's like here too.......prices of housing is getting so high.....

Re: A long rave

Yes, @PeppiPatty, housing is tough on a low income. My friend is going through a move at the moment and hasn't found a place yet. I'm with her on the journey and looking every day for her. Really want to see her in a good new place, one that lasts for her as long as possible.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita and all here 😊 Such great news about the lease! I remember the scare you had earlier in the year, and know what it's felt like for me to resign a lease, especially after a fright like that - it's been a big relief. Fingers crossed the health flattening can ease up now and a getting up and about next week feels good for you ❤

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita @Appleblossom @Shaz51 and others who may be around this morning.

@Mazarita the session with the psychologist was pretty heavy ... we are starting to 'map' the traumas and spent most of the session talking about the most recent event. DV. Even though it was 8 years ago it still affects me a lot. I was in tears several times during the session. She wants me to pinpoint the first, the worst and the most recent traumatic events. And has told me that I can expect to feel fairly flat at least a few hours after each session. I am hoping that by diving into this hard work I will reach a point where the cPTSD effects reduce and even for some recovered chunks of memories and to get out of the anxiety/panic state taking over so often. Edit : I should have explained the therapy we are working towards is EMDR.

Glad to hear you've been getting some rest and hoping your cough improves soon and that the Dr can at least give you some symptomatic relief while the bug runs it's course. Really happy for you with the news about your lease.

@Shaz51 I hope you too find remedies to balance your iron levels. Maybe a dietician or naturopath could help after you've had the diagnostic tests done.

@PeppiPatty sorry to hear about your son's health issues. and Mr G's. Sending you wishes for strength and patience.

Hoping everyone is having a smooth start to the day and that things go according to plan for you all.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

I'm glad to hear the day-by-day recovery is slowly making you feel better, and hope when you see the Doctor there is something to relieve the cough with. Fabulous news on the lease renewal 😄 I did get some mowing done yesterday afternoon! Just around the house, I still have the entire backyard and a little outside the front fence to the car.

I'm feeling Ok in general, my visit to the center of my Universe always inspires me a little. I travel quite a long distance to my center and do so about every month - I've come up with a plan 🙂 I've found a spot (just on google maps) about half-way between me and my center, where there is a free camp spot near a river/creek - next time I go I'm going to head there to break the journey, and that way I'll be camping every month 🙂 Just overnight, but it's more than I'm doing now 😉

I slept in a little this morning, just laid in bed and listened to the first alarm, at which time I get 3 critters instantly in my face 🙂 But they know better than to push the point, if I just roll over they lay back down again 🙂 . . . and the whole scene repeats in 10 minutes with the second one 😄 I even got some dishes done yesterday, so todays mission is the washing machine 🙂

Hope you got some peaceful rest inbetween Pumkin hour and now. Streaming the love and healing energy

Niqua
