A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

@Teej, great that you skyped with your friend. I still break out in overnighters at times too. I am getting sleepy but, like you, hyped from the day.

Re: A long rave

The irony is I yawned all the way through the conversation @Mazarita 😳. I hope you unwind soon as it sounds promising you might sleep ok after such a huge day. You've kind of inspired me to try and see my day as just a busy but ok day tomorrow. I have DBT for 2.5 hrs, then my therapy appointment, then cook family dinner and clean my house a bit. This is kind of a huge day for me. It won't be filled with all the fresh air yours did today but mentally challenging and exhausting. Anyway now trying to put a new spin on it 😊. I hope you have a nice restful day tomorrow 💜🤗

Re: A long rave

That does sound like a productive day planned, @Teej. I have laughter yoga tomorrow, just that planned. It's pretty high energy by my standards but only lasts for an hour. Another good activity at the local mental health centre.

Good morning, @eth, @Teej, @Shaz51, @Former-Member, @Appleblossom and everyone,

Another solid sleep here from about 1am to 9am, one awakening, short duration. Feeling pretty tired this morning after such a big day by my standards yesterday. It's a bit touch and go whether I'll make it to laughter yoga. But I am dressed and pretty much ready to go, so I may well get there yet.

Hope the day has started well for everyone here.

Re: A long rave

Hello Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

To plane or to bus, that is a question? If it were me I think I'd be leaning toward the bus option, bus terminals although huge, don't tend to be as big as airports . . . and buses stay on the ground - I'd personally say that's a bonus 🙂 But I don't use buses even, you do . . . so maybe the plane is quicker, and these days possibly even cheaper? I think the change sets a lot of natural electro-chemical reactions going & just change itself does a lot of positive things. I hope looking forward to the 'change of scenery' is a positive force for you whichever way you choose to take it 🙂

Sparkling rubber duckies and to the hospital by quarter to 10 in the morning! I'd say that's something different but on a far more stressful level! It's good that you like your Gastroenterologists {did I Google that right?} I hope your paper-work {aauugghh} is swiftly attended to and you can have this procedure soon {will they contact you via mail?}. How was Art group? It was a big day to start as it did and continue through Art and then social cleaning until 9pm! Wow . . . huge (oo) No wonder your brain didn't want to stop straight away {haven't heard of this 'Reign' show yet} Glad it was an enjoyable day

Yes I survived another tumultuous tornado in the Center of my Universe 🙂 There's quite a bit of strain on my childs relationship and the pace is non-stop - just keeping up with where the youngest grandbaby was . . . and the dishes, for one day {oh, and I suppose climbing up and down from my roof-rack} made my whole body burn a bit, the muscles all just kind of feel a bit frayed! My brain is sort of a buzzing numb. I'm hoping for a do nothing day today, a 'sit and get over it' day 🙂 Which I normally would have had yesterday, but I eventually got out of my chair, had a bath {woo hoo}, got dressed, went into town {collected the rubbish first even!}; willingly sat in the bank waiting to go into their little room and chat with the manager {I think it was?}!! All I did was expain I'd like to help my child with a car and handed over a phone number, really I just set up a phone call between them for this morning. I'm kind of hoping my child will call or text me once it's over, which should be soon . . . and let me know how things went.

But just wanted to say I love you I'm listening and sending you everything positive in the stream

Niqua

Re: A long rave

Niqua, lovely to receive a reply from you this morning.

Brave move with the bank meeting, not something I imagine you enjoy very much, and nor would I. But clearly it's for an important cause and it's wonderful for you to do that for your daughter and family. Such a well thought out form of assistance too, seeing as a car seems to be a central cause of stress for them right now. And there's less likelihood of gambling losses with a car. Sounds like you might have had a bit of momentum happening from your trip yesterday, getting all those things done (including a rubber ducky) on your usual after-trip rest day. Hope you will take it easy and enjoy today. Hopefully aches and pains and numb buzzy brain will settle quickly.

Yes, you are right. Gastro is short for gastroenterologist. The hospital is likely to make contact by phone as they are trying to get me in quickly.

Art group was great, as usual. We made mandala drawings, which we then coloured in. It was pleasant. The class is growing week by week too. We won't all be able to fit in the room soon. The focussed, slightly chatty, mostly meditative energy in the room while we are being creative is very nice.

I think I will have to bite the bullet again and fly down to see mum on next trip. Every other way is more expensive. Perhaps more offputting is just the vast amount of time I would need to be in buses or trains. It's a very long trip by land! I think I'd need to spend half a week recovering at the other end, which is not really helpful. Any way I do it, I am hoping for positive outcomes too. I often have come back from Melbourne energised.

Thank you for your love, dear Niqua, love in return straight back across the wires to you.

Re: A long rave

Hi to you too @Mazarita. Just saw your message. Hoping you made it to laughter group and have had fun. I've been in a funk all day, fighting a cold or flu - perfect timing NOT.

Off to the psychologist this afternoon with PHaMs worker, then a poetry slam tonight with SIL. Looking forward to that and hoping it'll put my anxiety to rest for a while.

Hi @Appleblossom

s to everyone.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, the forum says you posted your message 11 hours ago, at midday. At that time I was starting laughter yoga, yes I made it, glad I did.

I know you will take good care of yourself while fighting cold/flu and understand how frustrating it is to be down with it. My mood tends to plummet when I'm sick too, makes sense. Hope your body is able to gently resist and ward it off. If it takes hold, let it be quick. ox

Wonder how the poetry slam was, that sounds good. They have poetry slams where I go too, though I've never been to one, just to the lower key open mike nights.

Hopefully you're already asleep while I'm writing this. I may watch another episode of Reign and then head to bed. Had a nap in the late afternoon until about 6pm, went to friend's for dinner. It has been a recovery day, though happily I've managed to do some things too. I couldn't manage a beach walk, though I went down and looked over the ocean and contemplated it. At home feet were burning from all the walking yesterday, and today's effort of about one and a half kilometres.

Sending healing wishes.
