A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Midnight to 6am with only a couple of short breaks, @eth, pretty good going! Cheers again about yesterday. How are you today?

Re: A long rave

10.15pm to 2.45am in one stint @Mazarita plus an hour nap yesterday afternoon. Feeling good. Heading out early with sil to drop off car, go for coffee, pick up car and get to living beyond abuse course 9.45 - 12.45.

Yesterday I finished my story and booked tickets for holidays in Darwin and Canberra - big step for me coz I haven't been past the letterbox alone for 8 months. Family will get me to and from airports and in transit I have booked meet and assist with the airlines so all should go well. So exciting. I've earned this treat and been saving the last 4 years so I can do this sort of thing.

@eth, cool to hear you got over four hours sleep in one block and feel good. Congratulations on booking the trip! That is a huge thing, and very exciting. Yep, you do deserve it (not that I think you need to). I admire your capacity to care for yourself with organising assistance during transit, rather than letting the problem deter you, as it might do to others, including me.

Re: A long rave

My friend suggested it @Mazarita and Qantas were really good about it. Didn't even have to tell them why.

Have to go get ready now. Will catch up more later this afternoon if you are around. Have a positive day x

Re: A long rave

That's wonderful that you are writing stories, @eth. Hahaha... these characters that come to us, you know the good ones, because they write themselves... all their dialogue, their voice, their actions, their habits, their likes and dislikes, all of it is there, ready to interact with other characters and make a story happen...

When you get on a roll, the words flow and the pages fill with them... wishing you happy writing, @eth

Hugs and happy vibes beaming to you all... 🙂

Re: A long rave

Hello Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

I don't know how, but I seemed to have missed this post! Well I've caught it now 😄

Not only are you a sparkly duck, but one with fabulous hair and pedicured palmates! {that's a term used for ducks feet :)}

I'm thinking it's time I had a wash too {and the puppies}, I always thought bathing was a bit rough on the skin - but maybe dirt, for too long, isn't so good for old skin either. I always look a bit like a snake . . . well, no . . . I just look diseased - but now I look like a diseased snake! 😄 and it's itchy and I can't help but itch it - so I just keep getting more and more sores - Charming! 🙂 I honestly don't remember the last time we bathed, I think a couple of weeks is a bit of an under-estimation; and I know I'll love it and feel so much better after it! Though I'll have to change the sheets, so I haven't made the bed yet, on account of the fact I'm planning on stripping it 🙂

I've been playing with a liitle idea I got on the last camp trip, setting my bed up on the roof racks 🙂 I have a 3 fold mattress, especially for camping and I make up a bed roll with a mattress topper, sheets and bankets (I usually put my pillows in the front cab with me, as I have to use them the night before and I like to pack and be ready before I go) It means when I get there I have to take everything out of the back to put the bedding in. So I'm thinking, if I make the bed up on top of the roof rack and devise a bit of a home made tent to cover me up there, it will make camping even simpler, and as such, even more enjoyable 🙂 I have a single security screen as a base on my roof rack and the mattress fits nicely on it 🙂 So that bit was easy, I chucked it up there and found that I can climb on via the front of the car. But once I was up there, the first thing that occured to me is 'what's going to stop me falling off the edges?' I don't tend to fall out of bed, so it probably isn't a problem, but if I did it's a lot longer fall than usual and who knows what type of floor/ground I'd be falling on! I found a pair of old adjustable roof racks - they made the perfect bed rails 😄 I have a couple of bendy tent poles, the kind that are in segments with an elastic line holding them together, I also found 4 corner pipes that fit into my hollow original racks; so I made bases to put the tent poles in (crossed over), it really makes for quite the dome tent on the top of my car 🙂 Now I just have to figure out where I want ropes and at what length, and have them permanently fixed in place. My idea is to make the bed up, ready to go, so that when I pull up, all I have to do is remove the rachet straps, climb up and under the tarp, place the poles in there bases, tie a few strings and ta da! 🙂 It'll also mean I can put the puppies in the back, without worrying about thier muddy feet 🙂 It will give me a little exta room for the extra camper I intend to take along with me next time; my cat likes to go camping too 🙂

Streaming lots of love to you
