Caring4Corny

Caring4Corny

I have been sitting on @Hope4me 's lap in her cubby house on her thread, drinking her Milo, playing with her Transformers and her My Little Ponies, having lots to say about myself, but like every self respecting 2nd born barges in and takes over without realising....I'm sorry @Hope4me I was so comfortable in your company I made myself at home, just like an annoying lil sis does. I copied ya with the using the '4' in the title eh, eh!

I began by posting this in the lived experience side of the tracks and then deleted it, realising I am sick of my story, and I am pivoting away from narrative and trying to move into action with caring for myself. It is something that feels very foreign, when your entire identity has been built on caring for others. Its no wonder in my offline life I have always attracted users and takers.

It's like I have no worth unless I am helping or being considerate to someone else's needs.

I have been on the carers forum in regards to both of my parents. Mother with schizophrenia from late teens and a father (now deceased by suicide) with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Depression, Anxiety & SH and both sides of the extended family riddled with Bipolar I&II, Psychotic illnesses, Anxiety, Agoraphobia, a new case of suspected BPD and Major Depression.

But I am not here to talk about or learn about caring for them, I am here to learn how to care for myself, and hopefully lift some of the depression along the way.

I am an incredibly independent and strong women, who was given no choice but to be self contained or perish.

Talking to my sib on the weekend, I forget that some people do not have this capacity and how amazing we are just to survive. We had each other and I think if we hadn't, none of us would be here. We're a bit bruised, and in my case limping and lame right now, but there are full grown adults who disintegrate the second life forces them to stand on their own 2 feet and get through some tough, and soul changing times, so I am beginning to realise that I am not as weak as a lot of other people can be, and I do have strengths even if I can't put them on a resume.

Some days my fathers voice still rings in my head, but I have made big leaps and I have to remind myself to look around at other people. My doc said how on earth I managed to escape a life on drugs, alcohol or ending up in prison is beyond him, but just like Punky Brewster whose parents abandoned her I am still here...

I do feel in a foreign land though because depression is new to me, anxiety is my base camp.

I can't turn my back on my 5 year old self, but how have others began the journey of caring for themselves, and getting over it feeling so alien?

I don't suffer from reactive attachment syndrome and expect a significant other to clean up my parents mess, I am willing, and have been doing the work since I took myself to a clinical psychologist when I was 19.

There is behavioural evidence that I do have self respect and the drive to protect my dignity, I know I have the potential and the follow through in me.....

I just can't shake this depression though. It is like lead.

Thanks for reading

Corny

A gurrrll can only dream @Appleblossom . Furry friends are the best.

I was a meek and mild door mat for years and years @Appleblossom . I will always be sensitive and jumpy to interpersonal stress & strong personalities, but in my own quiet way I am learning to stick up for myself and not be such a push over.

Someone I used to know always said "you are not the boss of me" in an attempt to reverse some of the damage her domineering mother did to her self esteem......so I thought that's great, I am going to start saying that too! It works heaps better with strangers, I find friends or family just laugh at me...in a nice way.

You are not the boss of me

You are not the boss of me

You are not the boss of me

You are not the boss of me

You are not the boss of me

You are not the boss of me

You are not the boss of me

I hope you can breathe where you are @Appleblossom , Sydney is a BBQ,

take care,

Corny

We are worried about Sydney. I will always love Sydney.

I am down south. The weather is fine but we have had more allergies and respiratory issues this year than ever before.

Re: Caring4Corny

I love Sydney too @Appleblossom , but down south is a nice place as well! Sweeping green hills, lovely beaches - but no work

I am not surprised that you and your family have had more allergy and respiratory problems this year. I have a friend in Sydney with asthma that has to stay inside at home some days and can't go to work otherwise they may end up in ER. The smoke haze was really bad yesterday and the fires near Richmond, Campbelltown and the Blue Mountains are blanketing the city with thick smoke this morning.

Australia really needs to up our game with building design, water catchment and preparing for extremes in weather...doesn't help having a climate change denialist as a Prime Minister, or corruption in the NSW Liberal Party giving contracts for inefficient infrastructure.

Its funny how Australian patriotism comes out in thinking that certain things don't exist in our political system like corruption and that we are better than other countries. Better at hiding it! But I was talking to some friends born in Europe and Asia and they said when they arrived and saw the age of the Sydney Ferries, the amount of toll roads, the lack of a coherent underground subway and the light rail they thought this screams of corruption. It makes no sense and when it makes no sense there has to be some back yard deals. My friend works in the criminal justice system and was telling me last week that an American company that was disqualified in the States and has an atrocious record has won the contract to run Parklea Maximum Security Jail......so dodgey.

Until our government brings Australia into the 21st century I don't know what hope we have of being able to tackle health and environmental crises.

That's my morning rant @Appleblossom . I love Sydney but it's design has been neglected for many years with affordable housing especially. It will become like San Francisco where no one in the service and human services industries can afford to live because they get paid so little.

I hope you breathe easy today! Just heard the first siren for the morning.

Hello Miss @Former-Member I hope that you are getting some sleep lil' button

I saw a Burnese Mountain Dog recently in Sydney which is very rare, have only ever seen one other where I grew up in regional NSW, have you ever seen one in real life? Apparently they are convinced they are lap dogs....

Re: Caring4Corny

Its good to hear your opinions. @Corny Everyone puts theirs out there. Yep the water management is atrocious too. I was upset as I did a lot of primary school in NSW. Some of the Murray Darling stuff is so logical. How can they stuff it up? That it has not been managed properly is to do with backdoor dealing. So yes. Corruption is an issue here in Sunny Oz....

Take Care

@Corny

Many moons ago an old neighbour had a Bernese mountain dog, reminded me of a St Bernard without the dribble.

Re: Caring4Corny

They are rare to see in Australia @Former-Member and huge big paws!

Another breed I was realised I have only ever seen once in my life when I was a small child is an Old English Sheep dog...I remember thinking they looked like something out of Sesame Street.

Re: Caring4Corny

Just what I needed @Maggie thank you so much, the pup is gorgeous, if only they were mine!

I had a good sleep last night. I am a little anxious because I have a family meeting today with my sibs and my psychiatrist but its a step in the right direction, hopefully it won't be too triggering but I know it will. Sigh.

I really hope to go home mid/late next week, I just don't know what the doc thinks....I am climbing the walls as you can imagine as I hit 16 weeks in hospital for this year...
