Having hobbies to help with anxiety/depression.

Having hobbies to help with anxiety/depression.

Like crochet, knitting and most craft work, plus writing non-fiction literature. All four mentioned require

the input of using one's hands and this is theraputic for easing depression and anxiety. Do other ladies

find craft work relaxing and a form of mindfulness as one has to concentrate on the activity in hand.? Bimby2

Re: Having hobbies to help with anxiety/depression.

hello @Bimby2,

Hobbies definitely help me with Anxiety and depression. I also like to knit, crochet and quilt. I'm not creative naturally but have taught myself some skills from reference books.

Interested in what it is you write about @Bimby2. I occasionally do some journalling.

Love reading fiction and sometimes write poetry but enjoy these most when I'm in a fairly stable mood.

I think my hobbies help me because patience is required and they can distract me from my negative thoughts.

I'm currently trying to decide whether to give away some garments, beanies and blankets to a charity.

Which means deciding which charity, for which I will have to make phone calls and probably have to leave the house to drop them off. This is daunting for me because of anxiety, but hopefully I can meet the challenge. I also worry that knitted items are good enough for someone to want them.

My hobbies get me through the day and are balance with domestic duties.

Hi @Bimby2

Such a great question. I saw that you posted in the other discussion about hobbies, which is excellent.

For me I LOVE colouring. It seems it's all the craze now - and I totally get why. You can just think about nothing, enjoy the colours and the challenge and feel fulfilled once you have finished a picture!

I do have a bad habit of starting and not finishing though 🙂 I'll have to work on that 🙂

Looking after ourselves

Thank you NikNik for your kind comments about colouring -in and yes, it does allow oneself to

get involved without too much ado in a hobby that we can see our efforts rewarded. Recommended

for anyone to take up this hobby and get enjoyment from same. All good wishes to each forum member.

Re: Looking after ourselves

We've got a beautiful colouring in book on our kitchen table at work. It's quite in demand! It's probably the closest I get to being in the state of 'flow'. Very tranquil.
