Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

Sometimes when we have navigated the reality of complex trauma, mental health diagnosis (or even the challenges of being a mental health carer), it can be extremely easy to forget to direct unconditional compassion towards ourselves.

Many people are familiar with the voice in our heads that can ruminate heavy and unkind words towards oneself, sometimes over the course of so many years that we don't even recognise it. The output of this can be lower self-esteem; most definitely a common symptom during mental health recovery.

Join @Former-Member for this Topic Tuesday as we soundboard ideas around improving our self-esteem whilst living with complex mental health challenges

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Alright good humans 🙂 Thank you for being so authentic and real so far.

Moving onto Question number 3!

Self-esteem is a crucial element in our mental health and overall well-being. As adults, we can explore our self-perception and the way in which we view ourselves ongoing.

We can develop healthier self-esteem by questioning whether our internal reality matches the external, much like a lot of the strategies one would learn in Cognitive or Dialectical Behavioural Therapy 💪

Feel free to share some ways in which you have “cut yourself some slack” and minimised the negative self-talk that occurs during an experience of low self-esteem?

I try to remind myself of positive feedback @Former-Member That's hard work.

Like when I said (to psychologist) that I feel like a total disppointment (to everyone).

She said: "You're never a disappointment. I'm always impressed by your tenacity" (that was lovely to hear).

Adge

Re: Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

@Former-Member I stil have not learnt. I often feel that what is inside in no way matches reality, but I cannot separate the two. I feel that when the outside reality does not match my internal ideas, I retreat because I keep thinking I am going to say something that does not match the situation, or take what they are saying and totally misinterpret it. I never learnt how to make the internal and external worlds come together, so I just go back into what is inside because that seems safer somehow
