EMDR - Has anyone done this

EMDR - Has anyone done this

Hi all, i have had 1 session with a new psychologist who i like, but she has suggested we do a number of sessions of EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming. Apart from the cost factor which i rly cant afford, im pretty nervous about the whole thing. Supposedly it desensitises u to past trauma and its affects but things like this rly scare me. As any of u that i hav bn communicating with know i am going thru an extremely difficult time right now and im not sure that digging up or re-experiencing past traumas is the best way for me to go right now, even if the idea is to reduce the traumatic nature of those events. Im scared enough of the trauma and torture im going through right now! Id rly appreciate any feedback from anyone that has had this type of thereapy. I am seein her on monday and we are supposed to be devising our treatment plan so i need to make a decision by then. I have tagged some of my forum friends in but please feel free to tag anyone else in that u think might be able to provide some feedback.

Re: EMDR - Has anyone done this

@Former-Member I was typing my post when you sent your last one. I think multiple traumas and complex PTSD are probably different for everyone. My traumatic events started when I was a young child and have continued over adulthood too and several times I have not been able to process anything at the time. I've been frozen and dissociated while the event happened, then in a flight state afterwards which has also triggered bipolar mania and psychosis at times. And then resulted in me being hospitalized several times. Lots more I could write here but I'm running out of time this morning.

Re: EMDR - Has anyone done this

@eth haha yep its a bit hard to keep track of these trails. Glad u got it tho.

Yes writing is incredible therapy.

I wrote my memoirs when i was pregnant. Or rather it just came out. Think i needed to process a lot before having my son.

I actually grieved really well so dont appear to have any grief issues. I wrote baby songs before i knew i was pregnant with the baby that died. Quite bizarre. I also linked up with grief organisations like Sands so got to speak with a lot of other women.

Think the last of my grief came after i gave birth to a live healthy baby. Lady next to me didnt know why i was crying my eyes out but the midwives did. They were superb. Thanks for suggesting it tho but think im right with that trauma. Processed it well. Was really odd cause i couldnt do much couldnt sing or do any music so i crotcheted. I made a whole queen sized blanket then learnt a really tricky stitch pattern & made a single bed blanket. So i clearly do creative things to heal. Guess im very lucky to b very creative.

I find it interesting the pattern of my life with men tho & im hoping the EMDR helps with this issue.

Yes i gave my timeline of events to this Psychologist. He was very impressed with it. Said really helps. So we can get straight into it. Think it was therapy just writing that. If he needs more details hes welcome to read my memoirs tho i think the timeline is all he needs.

Thats incredible what ur doing with all the writing. Nice way to meet like minded people. The trauma writing sounded extremely interesting.

I really think its great if u can try to process a lot of the traumas in your life. Sure u need to have stuff in present time , a life basically, hobbies etc but its interesting to piece your own life together so it all makes sense.

Thats what writing my memoirs did for me. I think because ive been able to write my memoirs ill b able to address my past thru EMDR.

I couldnt have yrs ago. I was a total right off. Id lost every scrap of confidence & self worth. Had absolutely no voice. Really battled to stay alive. Threw everything i owned. Just had no reason to live. Certainly wasnt able to b around anyone cause everyone triggered me off. A total hermit i was. My first job was actually singing for people in nursing homes. Paid jobs. Govt cut funding so jobs ceased but it really helped me develop confidence. Next job was working as an extra on tv. That also developed my confidence. Once again creativity helped me. I did quite well with little acting jobs in Melb. Then i decided i wanted a regular bit of work so i chose lollipop job cause i knew id b on my own so no1 could hurt me trigger me off.

I spent 8yrs fixing my physical body in gyms. It was hard because i did get sexually harrassed & then later severely bullied. Its amazing i continued fixing my body with all i was put thru. Jealousy it was. Ive had a hard time with jealousy in my life. Cause my mother was violently jealous of me. Cause im so sensitive i pick up on others emotions. Ive learnt its theirs but it hits me so hard when they project their neg emotions at me.

So im not getting any of this since ive moved to tville so thats good.

Im hoping to get involved with musical theatre here but im just not feeling confident enough with it yet.

Ill stick with teaching exercise classes for now as its building up my confidence.

Its amazing how emotional & physical abuse continued can totally destroy u.

Certainly did with me.

U can have all the talent but if u lack the self worth & confidence its really hard to take the talent anywhere.

Its a lot of work rebuilding yourself back up.

The average person just doesnt appear to have to do this

Think ur right seems to affect people differently alright. Ive been able to narrow mine down i think to where its all stemmed from so im hoping the EMDR can get to my root causes. Gosh i hope they look after u well in hosp. I didnt have a good experience in hosp. The trauma can definitely set off the moods that ive noticed.

Re: EMDR - Has anyone done this

@eth thats not bad then $50 if u get results. I dont think theres many therapists in tville that do it. Ive only just found out about EMDR thru another therapist. Hope ur session was ok.

Re: EMDR - Has anyone done this

@Former-Member We just talked today, some about current challenges and graded exposure methods, and some debriefing from the last 2 sessions which were particularly intense. She was checking in with where I've been at since doing them. What differences I've noticed. Which I've mentioned previously here. Too tired to go into the details of what it was about specifically.

My psychologist is training to be an EMDR teacher and we've filmed a couple of sessions for her supervisor ( which have been destroyed since and transcripts are anonymous). I didn't mind because if what I've been through can help her to teach others to help more clients then it's not all completely pointless. I feel good about helping contribute something to the body of knowledge.
