The Sleep Demon

The Sleep Demon

I read some much about people struggling with sleep I thought I would start with The Sleep Demon as the title of the thread - and I am feeling absolutely positive that this will draw water - I really am

Some having trouble sleeping, some can't stay asleep - others sleep too late - some fall asleep watching TV and so - too much or too little or enough but at the wrong time - we could start an academic argument on this subject

Which means we discuss this openly and honestly with no criticism - we get enough of that from the media and our doctors - heaven knows

So - where do you fall in - I have no pattern - sometimes I wake up too early and then that afternoon I will fall asleep watching TV then I will be awake through midnight and eventually finally sleep and even get up and answer the phone when Telecross gives me a friendly phone call to help me start the day - and see that I am okay - and I can get back into bed and go right on sleeping

I asked my pain specialist if I could have a small amount of temazapam just to sort this pattern out and she told me the rules of good sleep

Get up at the same time every day

Go to bed at the same time every day

Don't nap during the day

Don't read, watch TV or play puzzles or use the computer at night.

D'uh

I told her this is boring - and it is - I fall asleep watching the news - my stars - I can't stay on my feet all day - I start walking into walls -

So I use the time when I am awake and fill those hours reading, doing puzzles, watching TV or using the computer - and as I live alone - really - does anyone care

And I am sure I get enough sleep - knowing we need sleep to organise our brains

So - as someone in the Night Shift Forum brough up the name The Sleep Demon -

Where are you and what do you do?

And this is Decadian - waiting to see if there is anyone taking this subject up.

Ah hah @Silenus

It's nice to know that someone's taken the time to listen to me!

Very few of my friends IRL would recognise me now. This latest med (low dose too) has allowed the real Kurra to emerge. Sociable, chatty, genuine smiles and no longer any need for my survival mask. Every day is an absolute pleasure and joy. Above all an ability to sleep!!!

Re: The Sleep Demon

I hear you all. I get very little sleep which has caused some problems in the past including a trip to hospital as my mental health plummeted. Currently, I go to bed at 11pm every night and am asleep by midnight, but always seem to wake around 3am for some unknown reason. It then takes quite awhile to get back to sleep, but mostly I don't so am surviving on three to four hours of sleep per night. I've recently been changed to an "activating" drug (voices) but that doesn't seem to have made the sleep situation any worse. I'm still waking at 3am or there-abouts every night. It's really frustrating and I feel for those who cannot get a good nights sleep.

Kind regards,

Ellie.

Re: The Sleep Demon

One aspect of too little sleep is that it can be exhausting. Sleep deprivation is a cruel thing.

But there's another aspect of sleep disruption that is important, especially for bipolar peeps...

Well...

Silenus can now well and truly confirm that lack of sleep and disruption of sleep patterns causes his hypomania to sky-rocket...

I flew from a major city to a major city to attend my lovely partner's son's bucks weekend. I took pride in ensuring the fine lad was kept lubricated throughout the night, and kept safe and all the rest of it...

Consequently, I was last man standing after a 26 hour non-sleep period. I had been observing my energy levels on the rise while everyone else's energy levels were dipping. At 7 am, after an all-nighter, not even the substantial quantities of alcohol I consumed were doing anything to slow me down. I was ready to keep going and going...

That was the story of my life, back in the day... too much work or play makes Si a high boy...

So I forced myself to lie down for an hour and a half, and roused 5 minutes before my alarm was due to go off. I've now caught a flight back home, and am ever so bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Forcing myself to stop hopping around everywhere and talk a million miles an hour. So profoundly not tired...

33 hours awake...

This is the danger. Paradoxically, lack of sleep makes me high and hypo, which used to feed back into itself, as I then would fall into an extended pattern of way too little sleep, heading higher and higher... oh Icarus, stop your flapping, child...

Thankfully, knowledge is power, and instead of running with it, I am deliberately putting the brakes on. I will go to sleep at normal time tonight and see how it goes...

Hugs to all who are toyed with by the Sleep Demon...

Re: The Sleep Demon

@Silenus, wow, that's a long time without much sleep at all. Up until I put a stop to it in the past year, I was having 18 hour video editing binges on a fairly regular basis. But the medications I take do help to level things out even when I miss sleep, putting a 'ceiling' on the highs and a 'floor' to the lows. I decided to go with meds because I just couldn't live with being tossed around to the extremes like a rag doll any more. I admire your courage in treading this bipolar path without medication and just your own insights and discipline as guides. Take it as easy as you can today. Sometimes when I'm feeling hyped up, I consciously move slower around the place, to an almost exaggerated extent. It's kinda funny to do it, so there's a bonus to that too. Breath focus too if you can keep your mind on it. Basically anything to slow down the nervous system. But I know you probably already know most of this unasked for advice. Bla bla bla and the rest of it. Good on you for looking after your partner's son at the buck's night. Hugs!

Hi @Silenus it's a known trigger for me too. Hoping the hype doesn't last too long and you are able to rest again tonight. You have amazing insight into what's happening.

Re: The Sleep Demon

Hi @Silenus

That must have been some party - but you were in the control seat, obviously someone has to be.

But what a marathon - a massive all-nighter and then - zoink - toyed with by the Sleep Demon again.

You can never tell what the sleep demon will do to you - the opposite can happen

After 2 sleepless nights - or was it three - with no day time napping - I had the other side of the beast - I couldn't stay awake and the weekend passed with me falling asleep at the drop of the eyelids - and feel as if I lost two days.

I remember the days back when I crashed to sleep as soon as I got into bed - slept through and then woke up early and got up at 6.00am to get to work at 8.30am and life was go go go go - I was a busy person then,

But before that - when my second child had infected tonsils and would wake us up chocking I don't think I got a full night's sleep for 5 years

That Sleep Demon needs to be fed and housed, given priviledges and if it doesn't have a warm bed - it's wants a comfortable chair and it loves our favourite programmes on TV

At least I feel as if I have filled my sleep quota for now - and let's hope life can get back to enough sleep at the right time

btw - I was answering you @Silenus - how did you sleep last night?

I hope everyone got a good night's sleep

Re: The Sleep Demon

Hi @Mazarita @eth @Former-Member @Decadian 🙂

Thanks for the words of wisdom. Contrary to popular belief, I don't always take the wise considered path... hahaha... so any of your own knowledge and experience is truly appreciated.

I went to bed at normal time - 10:30-ish. I only overslept an hour and a half this morning, so I think I've managed to avoid throwing my sleep patterns out, which is good...

Unfortunately, before I went to bed yesterday, I waffled on a lot. I was talking in generic terms about suicidal ideation, and appear to have triggered my lovely partner's brother-in-law's childhood trauma...

Stupid talk-too-much Si...

That's one of the down sides of my hypomanias...

It was written on about 80% of my school report cards from primary school to high school... "talks too much"...

Will see tonight if I need to make amends or just leave it be for fear of making it worse...

Gently treading, I turn sometimes to see footprints too deep in the soft sands I walk in. I trust to the tides of fate to come and wash away my presence...
