Why do people join forums?

I have joined a few forums in the past 6 years since being diagnosed with BPD, depression, PTSD. I was on one well known forum but was 'not allowed' to go back as I was on there too often. I still get angry with that decision, I tried to explain it was my BPD behaviour, it was my depression, and anxiety seeking out help but they refused and have 'banned me'. To me that was a kick in the guts, an abaonded I will never forget. How can a mental health forum a well known company ban someone who was so vulnerable and needed help, support and advice from others. I feel so betrayed.

I am totally blown away by the amount of people that are suffering from a mental illness/disorder.

But the fact is that if we didn't have this fantastic forum we wouldn't be able to chat to others who are in the same boat as I am; to be able to get some support, advice and even a virtual hug - it means so much to me and I am sure to others as well. We all understand the struggles, the pain, the hurt, the abandonment, the tears, we get it.

For me, I struggle so much to talk to my husband with indepth conversations about my mental health. I struggle with talking to him about my personal issues like depression and how it feels for me; my self harming episodes and my suicidal ideation. I guess my husband doesn't understand because he hasn't been there, he doesn't have depression, he wasn't sexually abused as a child; he doesn't know what to say.

But being on here I can talk to others because I know that some of you (if not most) can understand what we are all going through.

And by being on here and supporting each other we care, we all want to feel better, to be able to work, to be able to get out of bed each day, to be able to see that we have a purpose in life.

I am just so glad that I am on this fantastic forum. For me it is a 'release' of my emotions, my hurt and pain. And I can talk to others and don't feel so alone, abandoned or rejected.

Re: Forums

Nobody in my real life (apart from professionals) knows about my MH issues. A handful of people have a vague idea that I do have MH issues but I prefer them not to know details. I guess that coming here lets me be open about that part of myself, which is a nice thing.

Re: Forums

Hi again @BlueBay

I read the whole thread but decided to come back to the top to reply to your original post

A lot of what happens in websites and groups relies on the commitment of the Leaders or Managers - I have had trouble in some groups - on different subjects - and there needs to be very strong people to run a worthwhile forum - and one with well defined rules - which I admit I don't read very well

But when it comes to Mental Illness/Disorders - it does strain the system if the management does not define what is too much for THEM to handle - other sites are well-moderated - and even so - when I have read the rules because they are few and clear - have to make sure that their membership can handle the traffic

And although it has hurt you, it has hurt me - a show of hands might indicated most people have had a brush with a website of support group somewhere along the way and it's possibly because they could not handle the traffic - basically

So I have found this site very open - and I can't see that anyone is in a place where they are straining the system - perhaps the managment in the site that banned you did not understand venting - I don't know - but yes - it does hurt and why have a site/group for mental illness/disorder if they are unable to define venting or asking for advice - or just telling their story

Many people with ideas of self-harm, or depression, or anxiety etc - are in a place that the majority can't handle - and as a bereaved parent I have had a lot of things said to me through the years - and oddly - they are very similar to the strange, unthiking things that are said to people with chronic pain - and now I am learning - with trouble just facing the world

And who dares say "no entry" because you say more than someone else - they have yet to learn - and in saying what they do - imo - tempt fate

I can't help with your husband but as for websites - you have this one and I am thrilled I have been able to open up and talk about the things that bother me - PTSD and flashbacks etc - and I am among friends with my Life Line calls -

But here's the most important thing - you and I have spent time together in your thread "having a bad morning" - I can assure you - I have never felt it too hard to respond to anything you have said

And this is an important topic - and as someone who has been told to leave myself - quite a different story - I think this thread will draw water
