Why do people join forums?

I have joined a few forums in the past 6 years since being diagnosed with BPD, depression, PTSD. I was on one well known forum but was 'not allowed' to go back as I was on there too often. I still get angry with that decision, I tried to explain it was my BPD behaviour, it was my depression, and anxiety seeking out help but they refused and have 'banned me'. To me that was a kick in the guts, an abaonded I will never forget. How can a mental health forum a well known company ban someone who was so vulnerable and needed help, support and advice from others. I feel so betrayed.

I am totally blown away by the amount of people that are suffering from a mental illness/disorder.

But the fact is that if we didn't have this fantastic forum we wouldn't be able to chat to others who are in the same boat as I am; to be able to get some support, advice and even a virtual hug - it means so much to me and I am sure to others as well. We all understand the struggles, the pain, the hurt, the abandonment, the tears, we get it.

For me, I struggle so much to talk to my husband with indepth conversations about my mental health. I struggle with talking to him about my personal issues like depression and how it feels for me; my self harming episodes and my suicidal ideation. I guess my husband doesn't understand because he hasn't been there, he doesn't have depression, he wasn't sexually abused as a child; he doesn't know what to say.

But being on here I can talk to others because I know that some of you (if not most) can understand what we are all going through.

And by being on here and supporting each other we care, we all want to feel better, to be able to work, to be able to get out of bed each day, to be able to see that we have a purpose in life.

I am just so glad that I am on this fantastic forum. For me it is a 'release' of my emotions, my hurt and pain. And I can talk to others and don't feel so alone, abandoned or rejected.

Ahhh Bella 🙂

I'm the same 🙂 I am too huggy, I think, but...my grandchildren race up to me as soon as they see me, (have to brace, otherwise 3yo would topple me) so guess it has its good points 🙂

And, sometimes I hug people who appear quite sad. A fellow looked so sad, and I gave him an hug, and turned out his wife had passed only a week or so earlier, and family were quite distant. He thanked me, and actually looked happier and smiled 😉

Hugs to you all 🙂 🙂 🙂

Re: Forums

I joined this forum back in June last year because I had become so housebound I couldn't even get myself out of the flat to a doctor to renew essential prescriptions. Things would have become very ugly if I'd had to go through sudden withdrawal from three psych medications at once at that time. This forum was the first step in slowly coming out of the bad state I was in to the improved place I am in now, and has been an important part of my ongoing support structure ever since I arrived.

From what I know of this forum, let me reassure you, @BlueBay, that you will not be banned for too many posts. Like @Appleblossom, I've been a very active member here, clocking up over 2000 posts in less than a year. There are others who have posted much more. In fact it was simply because members like us were so active that we were asked to be community guides during mental health week last year, to help with the influx of new members back then.

Sending good vibes to all. Again, hooray for huggy forum people! (((hugs)))

Re: Forums

Hi @Mazarita 🙂

The BlueBoard forum was the same for me at a very difficult time in my life. The support, knowledge and friendships I gained and shared saved my life...

These online communities are amazing places...

Hahaha... I think I've got over 8,000 posts under my belt in the 4 years I've been a BlueBoard member.

Sometimes it can become addictive. At one point I had to pull back for a while because it was consuming my life to the detriment of my lovely partner in the Really Real. Nawty Si... 😉

Re: Forums

Hi @Silenus, agreed that it's worth reflecting on addiction with forums. I spend a lot of time on the computer in general because most of my creativity is tied up with it. It all adds up to something that has a role to play in my tendency to be housebound. On the other hand, there are the benefits of the forum, the different ways we can help each other, even just with simple companionship when feeling isolated. As always, finding a balance is often a challenge!

Re: Forums

Hi @BlueBells

You may have seen the Community Guidelines floating around - if not, you can find them here

We always notify someone when they have breached guidelines and we work with them to assist to get their post to a point where it still conveys their message, but doesn't break guidelines.

It's pretty hard to get banned on here - it has to be some pretty intentional guidelines breaking to get to that point.

Hope that clarifies!

Thanks for the reply, NikNik 🙂

So...too many posts won't earn a ban, then?

Hey Si, you are safe, then 😄 😄 😄
