Exo's Exposé

Exo's Exposé

Looking for somewhere to hide in the Forum, no offense to anyone, I'm just kinda used to my own space - it feels safer to me. I often feel like I'm 'butting in' on other threads, I want to say something but it isn't 'in-line' with the current flow of conversation.

It rained here yesterday, dogs & cats weren't falling from the sky, but the grounds wet, there's puddles in my driveway & it's soooooooo sooooooo much cooler 😄 Guru Google even promises more!! After this weird wet stuff stopped dropping from above, I took the dogs for their walk, I do this almost every afternoon, but after a storm with close lightning strikes, my main purpose is to check the fence is still upright everywhere. I'm happy to announce it was all in tip-top shape 🙂 I noticed new puddle spots all the way around, I was sad that some trees had to be pushed over for the fence line, but the dip of their absence looks quite beautiful with a drop of moisture shimmering within. When I had completed the usual circuit I by-passed returning into the house-yard & wandered through to the dam. I think I may have been a little rain-drunk, I was hoping to see water in it, there wasn't any. I even went & stood in the very center of it's base, I think I was expecting to sink in mud - I didn't; but the cracks are gone . . . & they were huge. So if the Guru comes through with it's promise, there may yet be a puddle for my Staffy to play in 😉

I've decided to leave my camping trip to the beach for another week, rain wouldn't stop me - it rarely rains 24 hrs a day, but storms have - they often have devastingly strong winds that can break off & pick up reasonably heavy objects, that become dangerous ammunition. I've been emailing with the owners of this place, I'll still be in the off-peak season if I leave it another week - though I worry being so close to the Easter holiday, there's a more likely chance of more people. I keep telling myself I've just got to 'get over' that, that that would be all part of the experience - but I know I'm lying to myself. I picked this spot mainly because of the dog-friendly off-lead beach, but also because on the satelite view of Google maps I could see that there's no towns around it. It's one of the most isolated camping parks I've seen {that's within 5 hours of home, well - maybe just a little more}. It also admits it has old amenities, I saw negitive feedback about the place for those reasons - I think if you want to go to a resort . . . that's where you go - not to a place that describes itself as a rustic, old fashioned bush camping park 😉

Re: Exo's Exposé

Hi @Exoplanet sorry for the rant in that last post to you. I have been getting triggered by the kind of repetitive standard advice that seems to be given so much here at the forum now. It's just that I feel that almost everyone already knows what we should be doing through it appearing very regularly in news and social media year in year out, and also getting it a lot from people I encounter in real life over time.

But how do you climb that Mt Everest when there is no motivation. For me it has been a recipe for greater feelings of failure.

Anyway, hoping you do go on another trip before too long. I know they involve high anxiety for you, but it seems to me that they have in some way been very rewarding as well.

Off to meet pfizer number 2 now. Wish me luck.

Re: Exo's Exposé

Hey @Mazarita. I'm sorry to hear that you have been feeling triggered by the advice provided here on the forums. It's such a wonderful space full of people wanting to share their experiences and support others but I know people are all at different stages of their journeys and sometimes we are in need of more of different supports from the people we reach out to.

Please feel free to email the forums team directly (team@saneforums.org) if there is something you would like to point out or discuss with us around the support here.

Best of luck for the vacination! 🌷

Re: Exo's Exposé

Gidday Mazy @Mazarita ,

I'm guessing you've had vac number 2 by now, so wishing you luck would be kind of null & void . . . instead I'll give you congrats 🙂 It's all done & dusted 😉 You've done your bit & once the majority of us have finished doing our bit, . . . you'll be able to see your Mum again & I won't have to worry about getting a fine because I haven't found out that some place is locked down, and so forth. I'll also be able to head down from where I'm at, although I know the center has a lot of beauty & it does have places with water - I don't have the right type of car & havn't for years now & I'm just too old & broken to get myself out of tricky situations now 😄

You go ahead & rant away girl, all part of what this sites about - getting stuff out. I hear you about the mountain, bugger the mountain - how do you do the dishes when there is absolutely no motivation! 🙂

Lots of love to you Mazy, & care, I hope you haven't had any reactions & are feeling fine

Hi @Exoplanet

I too had my second jab on Wednesday this week so I am pleased to say that I am fully vaccinated. I have done my bit towards herd immunity. Hopefully if I get the dreaded virus now it won't be as severe and won't lead to death but I guess that remains to be seen. I wouldn't like to actually test the situation. Hoping all is well with you xxx

Re: Exo's Exposé

Hi @Former-Member, thanks for your kind words. It's not just what I see around the forum fairly regularly. It's that I observe many of us with severe, complex and chronic mental health conditions are often not helped by the standard advice we repetively receive, year in year out, from many various sources, including social and news media and people we may meet.

It seems to me that most of us already know that eating well, sleeping well and getting exercise is going to improve physical and mental health. I imagine there are very few people in society at all that do not know this. It is very widespread advice.

But those of us who experience that kind of bottomed-out depression characterised by lack of ability to feel pleasure and barely a desire to live - it's almost impossible for many of us to engage with the 'good for you' advice when in those states. It is hard enough for people without mental illness to engage with the fairly strict disciplines that are advocated, let alone someone in a state of mental collapse.

For me personally, that kind of advice has become a trigger because, unable to find the motivation over many years for what is advocated, I have experienced worsened feelings of failure and that it is my fault the advice isn't working for me. It becomes even more of a trigger when I keep hearing it over and over.

I was granted NDIS earlier in the year and have taken on the researching and booking of my own activities. I have been looking for and finding left-of-centre activities that are primarily about nurturing feelings of pleasure in me, whether or not they are directly related to functionality, diet, exercise, sleep.

I'm finding these things that are for me primarily about growing pleasure are much more effective at improving my quality of life in a way that doesn't involve gargantuan efforts almost guaranteed to lead to collapse again from the strain. Curiously, I've also noticed that as the feelings of pleasure have been growing in me, I am automatically finding myself eating better, sleeping better and actually wanting to do exercise, almost without even thinking about it.

Overall I guess I'm saying that people feeling no pleasure at all may need pleasure therapies first of all. At the least I feel there needs to be some more creative approaches to mental health care than repetitive advice about eating, sleeping and exercise.

This post is not an attack on the forum. Having been here six years, I have witnessed and experienced the great value of members sharing and supporting each other. I often sing the praises of this aspect of the forum to mental health professionals and others I encounter offline. Real people experiencing severe and complex mental illness have a lot to teach each other and it's this aspect of the forum I find most valuable, a gift.

Re: Exo's Exposé

Hi @Exoplanet, yes I had vax number 2 on Thursday. The side effects have been considerably worse than after my first dose. I've been in severe pain not just from the orange-sized hard lump that came up at the injection site, but the whole upper left quadrant of my body and neck, front and back. It seems to have flared up my fibromyalgia pretty badly.

I decided to go out anyway today with my support worker, a lovely longish walk on the beach. It took my mind off the pain a little but I felt pretty sick when I got home, probably was a bit too much really. Fortunately it's starting to ease now, sigh of relief.

Despite the pain, I still feel like I've done my national service by being vaccinated, and that feels good.

Hoping your next trip comes along ASAP.
