A new start (kind of)

A new start (kind of)

Hi @Shaz51 @Zoe7 @outlander @TAB @Sam3 @utopia @Faith-and-Hope @Appleblossom @oceangirl @Sans911 @Snowie @Former-Member @soul @BryanaCamp @Former-Member @Bunniekins and whoever else is there in forumland

I have tagged some of you because we are speaking lots and some others haven't been around for long. If it's too much for you then that's okay I respect that. I won't take it personally.

I have decied to start up a new thread after my psychiatrist appointment today. Off to a new start.

Simply put, he made the point that I am pressuring myself to do stuff far more quickly than what I thought I could. When this approach fails, it feeds back into the loop that was there before (the "i am not good enough", "I have limited time", "I have wasted my life" etc).

He said it was good I didn't go to hospital and avoided ending up there. This doesn't help. What does help is changing the approach etc.

It was a good appointment. I see him again in the morning and then maybe someone else next week.

So it's not entirely hopeless or lost now.

He thought that pressuring myself to go and get this visa would be the wrong decision, given my state of panic yesterday and also this morning.

He said that I need to hold off on pressuring myself. By saying "okay now that I am in Australia for a bit longer, I need to go and find a job quickly" because this is simply unhelpful. It's the wrong attitude and will only feed back into those loops.

So am I feeling more settled? Yes. Do I know what is next? No. Does this bother me? No.

I see my psychologist tomorrow afternoon. I will get something from my psychiatrist in the morning about all of this I think, which he said he can send off as part of the extension on the visa (which lasts for 2 years anyway). It's just a case of extending the timeframe for when I can receive it.

This would effect my chances of working in defence, mi6 etc but these are already off the table for me given my history anyway. The same is the case for the military and police. It does seem like some things are cancelled out because of my MH, but maybe they are things I was never keen on anyways.

That's a side issue for now.

Going to the UK - still a goal. It's a case of how I get there and WHAT I do when I get there. We have established that rocking up with no job or place to live is too chaotic. Especially based on my experience and degree background and skills. But the UK is a goal. My Psychiatrist said "Poland is always there" so I think it might be worthwhile sending them an email asking if I could be either placed on next year's list OR alternatively get some of my money back given the circumstances. Again, not my concern for now.

My concern at the moment is explaining all this to dad. My Psych spoke to my mum today too so she is in the loop. I think he will understand, he wants what is best for me. It takes some adjustment and time. But this is life and how we live it.

THanks forumites. See you a bit later today

Edit: I heard today that one of my old tutees that i helped in 2017 is working and is at uni. Doing well and studying. I joked that we should meet up for coffee and then i can get a job at the same place lol. So today has had a silver lining. This was the student who nearly quit school. But I can only take as much credit for what they achieved. Most of it was them

Re: A new start (kind of)

I’d love to know what the content of the sessions are if you’re willing to share @MDT ?

My year 12 child recently delivered an oral presentation on anxiety & depression to fellow high schoolers as his chosen assessment topic to encourage them to care for their friends and/or seek help if required. Not sure why he came up with topic & choosing to believe it has nothing to do with my depression & everything to do with his caring nature!

Hey @MDT Wondering how your day has gone - knowing you might not be home yet but getting in early here. I had a good day - kept busy and that makes the day go quicker

Re: A new start (kind of)

hi gang. Good to be on this thread with you all.

Hey @MDT you have actual, real paid employment!!! WOW. How did you go today?? I'm sure you were totally excellent. Love what you wrote earlier about one step at a time and not over-complicating things. I have two degrees, one with first class honours (I was academically strong & have the huge HECS debts to prove it!) and I have been unemployed for 7 years (due to mental & physical illness) and I will be very lucky to get any paid employment in my current career which is an entry-level role that has nothing at all to do with my degrees. You, on the other hand, are seeking & got PAID employment in your filed of expertise that you will be able to put on your CV and move on from there like a champ.

Hello @Zoe7 hope your Wednesday was helpful and supportive and that today went well. Your energy and commitment to the kids & colleagues at your work amaze me. Only one more day to go then it's the weekend.

Hi @TAB great you went for a walk & glad a Centrelink payment is in place - would you qualify for DSP or what I guess is now called NDIS? I dunno, you sound like a real hard worker but you gotta look out for yourself & put your well-being first. Have you rescheduled for your dental health clean? (I will keep nagging you till you do!)

I'm feeling a symptoms spike since contact with my very mentally unwell brother. He's overseas & I tried so hard to tell him how I'd gotten on top of my mental health horror by seeking successful treatment (it took > 12 motnhs, like most people I'm sure) and all he responded with was "Can I see your pictures?". I was horrified & so frustrated that I've had to up my dose of anti-psychotics (it's ok, this is the arrangement I have with my pdosc, to up dosage when external stressors cause symptom spike). The pictures he was referring to was just that I told him it was so hard to communicate my MH symptoms to my psychologist & psychiatrist that I drew them 'cos I couldn't understand their MH lingo. I said "no, that's private" because they are! I was just trying to illustrate that I went to great lengths to communicate my suffering to my psychiatrist & that it resulted in successful treatment from him - i meant, "if I can do it, you can do it". It is so frustrating as now he has gone incommunicado, like usual. He's had no sleep for who knows how long and 'cos he's overseas there is nothing I can do. To compound this, my older sister, bless her cotton socks, has told our brother to just eat right, exercise & spend time with friends!! SHe has no idea how serious MH is and how you can't do any of those things when you're unwell & they don't help anyway, it's way more serious than that.

Sorry to rant, I'm all frustrated & pent up over it. I gotta go to a friend's birthday dinner tonight. Yuck. Everyone there will be full-time employed & with no mental illness. I'll have to act enthusiastic and "normal". I'm going because it's best to maintain friendships & I've put a lot into this friendship & don't want to flush it away now just 'cos I'm tired & wigged out from my brother.

Re: A new start (kind of)

have just done quick, dodgy wardrobe, hair & make-up to make myself look like a normal, employed friend. Am having a beer to settle my nerves. It is so hard doing this on a week-night. I usually like to keep my socialising to weekends.

@MDT sorry to sully you're "off to a new start" thread my my cr*p. And on your first day of awesome paid employment too - you don't want to be drowned in my crazy. You're a highly functioning guy & I so admire your determination & gusto in getting work & dealing with everything you are.

I didn't know where esle to post. And I didn't know who else to tell about my very mentally unwell brother. I saw friends last night for dinner & they were so lovely, sweet and highly functional. I couldn't just come out with, "well that's nice but my brother is stark, raving mad and I am disturbed by that because I am too! SO how about some salad?"

Re: A new start (kind of)

hi @BryanaCamp sorry about your brother. my sister has brother problems sometimes, so now she just ignores me haha

yeah, I got Honours 2a cos well, I was on wrong side of fence with lecturers, they said if you are going to argue 'the other' side, its got to be better than arguing for well what everyone else likes to believe lol and yeah still owe Help payments from like 20 years ago now ugh HECS paid off years ago. think DSP and NDIS unrelated. but was pursuing DSP with some hope 12mths ago til went back to work. At least its like $150 a week more than newstart so now that I dont smoke I could just about live on that. with newstart there needs to be other income or spend savings or both as most of payment goes on rent

Re: A new start (kind of)

We have a long weekend here this weekend @BryanaCamp so very much looking forward to that extra day off. I have a big decision to make as to whether I continue with DBT after the current module - I am presently leaning towards doing one more module then finishing up but will think about it a bit more this weekend.

It is tough when you have a family member unwell as well as yourself ...and your sister not getting it at all It is hard for those who have not been through it to comprehend just how much MI affects every aspect of your life. You also have the right to keep things to yourself and if your brother can't handle that then that is his issue not yours. I know it is hard not having that comunication when he is so unwell but you have to look after yourself first.
