Something’s not right

I’m sick of being crazy

I’m sick of being crazy

A little about myself, I have spent most of my adult life in and out of hospital with a number of different diagnoses which never quite fit the bill, 2 years ago I was diagnosed with BPD which I think has been the closest fit for me so far. Since this diagnosis I have been seeing a psychologist on a regular basis- in November my free visits ran out so I have to wait until April until I can get more free visits. This hasn’t helped, I’m currently getting Centrelink (unemployment) I really want to work however something flared up and sets me spiraling all over again when I start working- long story short I have been working with a job search place trying to get ready to work again (Centrelink want me applying for jobs until I am employed working 38 hours a week)

i have tried my best to just go with the flow but today when I took my son to school I had an absolute meltdown over nothing and have been crying for the past 9 hours. I went to my doctor and told him I wasn’t coping but he could only suggest more medications which I just don’t want (and can’t afford)

if I don’t meet these job requirements I will lose my only income. I’m a single mum and I just want to be normal. I am so so so sick of feeling like this. I can’t take it anymore. I thought I was doing so well and as soon as I try to be a normal adult I break down. I can’t be crazy anymore- it’s going to make me homeless if I can’t get a job and work. I just don’t know what other options I have. What’s wrong with me? I want to work, I want to be normal I just don’t know what else I am meant to do. I don’t want to be this way anymore.

Hi-LonelyGirl
I can relate-my doctors have not given me any support even though I have been going in constantly in the lead up to Xmas begging for support & telling them I am not coping-they just offered medication also which I did not want- I needed practical support- I found through my own research a mental health support service called Mh Connext- you need to get a reference from your doctor- but I was told it is a new service & not many doctors know about it- you can choose from phone support/ or in person support- I have phone support at the moment & they helped me survive the holiday period- they talk through your problems & help you find solutions, do all the running around of finding services & even call on your behalf- also I'm pretty sure?you can apply for disability support if you have a diagnosis of mental illness, preventing you from working-which is something, I would think, the nurses from Mh Connext would be able to help you with - I am not looking forward to taking my daughter to school next week as I find being around people really really difficult- especially in the bitchy/cliquey school environment- where the parents can be worse than the children with bullying & exclusion in my experience.
Try &google MH Connext- let me know if you don't get anywhere ' I'll try & find their number- I have found them really helpful & caring 💖

Thank you so much for the advice, I will look into it now. It’s so refreshing to hear I’m not alone on this, yes the school seem to flare up a lot for me as does Centrelink.

Re: I’m sick of being crazy

I feel for you both @lonleygirl @Serenity1

I am currently unemployed too and it is extremely difficult to cope with. I hear you @lonleygirl on centrelink. It is such a stressful place and I have been homeless before too when they have cut payments off.

I have never heard of what @Serenity1 suggested but it sounds like a great suggestion. If you are open to contacting charities many christian charities have been helpful to me in the past, even if they could not help me they could direct me to who I needed to talk to. Every charity from Mercy care to the jehovahs witness doorknockers have been a brilliant support and comfort to me. They are another option if you are interested. I understand how difficult it can be to do that though and hope your situation improves soon.

Have you thought of child care work? They are so often looking for workers and pay quite well. Its just playing with kids all day and very little pressure.

Apologies I got the tag wrong @LoneyGirl

Re: I’m sick of being crazy

I will try to reach out to some groups, I am really just not able to work right now, no employer will keep me on when I have ‘bad days’ and can’t go. I’m too unreliable (unintentionally)

i feel like I’m marching to a different beat and because I don’t quite fit into mainstream I am being punished. It really just puts my progress waaaay back and it’s so frustrating.

@LoneyGirl

Go and speak to a social worker at CentreLink. We don't all fit into their neat little criteria lists. That's where the social worker will help. Don't worry if you cry. Take a letter with you from your psychologist or psychiatrist stating your diagnosis. Explain to social worker your stress levels are out of control. That 38 hours a week scares you. That you are struggling to stay on track as it is, without the added pressure. She should be able to help you .

Re: I’m sick of being crazy

I hear you too,re centerlink. They have a very unfriendly attitude towards every one. If the Government really wants to help people with a mental illness they should over haul center link, get rid of all of the judgemental unfeeling ignorant people who occupy positions with in its organization. Provide us with mediators educated in mental health issues, to accompany us when we have to front up to center link . It would be interesting to know the statistics of suicides that could be directly linked to center link visits. I wonder do center link workers sleep soundly at night ?

Re: I’m sick of being crazy

I abhor Centrelink, I become nervous just going into the same building (which is difficult because it also houses the ndis). I’m on dsp and don’t have to job search but boy was that a struggle to achieve. I basically had to have an appointment with a CL representative while I was involuntary in hospital to prove to them I cannot work due to illness. I then have developed this paranoia that my pension will be taken away from me and I will have to pay it back. Scary stuff!

Re: I’m sick of being crazy

@LoneyGirl Hi, this is my first post on this site, so bear with me if I don't write the correct way...

Regarding your free psychology visits; are these through a GP mental health plan?

If so, they renew per calendar year, so if your last one was in November last year, you are eligible for more visits.

If the renewal or review of you plan is not until April, you can have a review earlier in special circumstances, which I believe this is.

Especially if you have found a psychologist that really works for you.

Have you close friends or a SAFE place you can go to? A safe place where you are protected from people you don't know, with a person you trust, someone you can just BE with, like a good friend? This can help me, even if they're doing their own thing, I just feel their presence and it calms me as I trust them.

I know you don't want to take more medication, as it can be expensive and is not the solution, but have you thought of an adjunct to your current medication, just to take the edge off, so you are better able to work through the stressors?

Re employment; what are you experienced in? Maybe just start with casual work if easier to find. Centrelink can be so difficult, but if a little work helps you, forget going for the full-time job for now, it would be too stressful it seems anyway.

Just my thoughts, sorry if no help. I feel like an alien sometimes, but I try to focus my mind back to when I feel human, and a non-crazy human! You can do it!!!

Re: I’m sick of being crazy

You are so right, just the thought for going into Centrelink sets off my anxiety. It’s so awful being treated so poorly- especially having BPD- I already hate myself so they don’t need to hate me too. I’ve linked in with a social worker who I am hoping will advocate on my behalf. In the meantime I’ve been cut off from my payments because I didn’t apply for enough jobs- they just don’t get it- needless to say I totally drowned myself in alcohol over the weekend which didn’t help anything (it never does) feel like I’m going backwards
