Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

@Silenus - a question if I may? I have episodes where everything I think is in forced ryhyming poetry, often pentremetre but sometimes not. Some of the rhymes are excruitaing or very slim indeed... But my brain latches onto this way of thinking.

Going to the shops, or talking on the phone becomes quite a challenge as I have to pretend I am not speaking/actually thinking in forced poetry.

Does this happen to you? I noticed a lot of your poetry is rhyming and rhythmic - if not exactly pentremetre. Do you get stuck in times when all your thoughts are in poetry modalitie? I ask because I have not ever met anyone else who has this form of whatever it is...psychosis?

Thinking In Rhyme

Whenever I'm hypo, I talk and write in rhyme,
I can't turn it off, always keeping time

All the bloody time
It really is a crime
Especially when I'm high
The rhymes come out and fly
It's compulsion at its worst
With rhymes at every burst
It's compulsion at its best
As I rhyme at its behest

Yeah... I can't control it when I get like this
I think it's a hit that others think a miss
It's a beat of my heart and a rhythm of rhyme
Words all entwined, and each in their time...

Hi @Former-Member 🙂

I'm really well at the moment... after 3 months depression followed by a mixed episode followed by a touch of rapid cycling...

Now I'm hypo hypo hypo, channelling all of that energy in writing...

It's intoxicating... but I'm keeping one foot gently on the brake... from my past experience, it wouldn't do to fly too high...

Sun block with SPF 1 million wouldn't be enough to stop the burn if I really spread my wings and fly... hahaha...

I've had a fantasy novel parked for over a decade... I wasn't ready to write more...

Now, I've got 3 major story arcs and most of my plot devices and characters sorted... 3 days of compulsive typing and inspiration...

I love this phase of the creative writing process... it's magnificent...

Sending salt-encrusted hugs and happy happy vibes your way oceangirl73... 🙂

How have you been?

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Okay, so here I go again, heading skyward in that relentless bipolar way... time for another poem, methinks...

No How

I'm heading towards the sun... Icarus flies again...
It gets exhausting, don't it? This constant need for awareness and mitigation of whatever mental state is in the process of going batshit crazy...
Bipolar...
Too high? Put the brakes on...
Too low? Try to survive it and live another day...
Too afraid? Tell yourself comforting bedtime stories until the Boogey Man goes away...
Too OCD? Repeat...
Too high? Put the brakes on...
How?
Learn how...
Apply how...
Then reach a state where that "how" doesn't apply...
Learn new how...
Apply new how...
Develop no how...
Know how...
Hahaha...
Repeat...
