Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Poem - I Dreamt My Dream

Sometimes, my poems pop into my head in a way that evokes the beat I am hearing. There is a music to words. And then I sometimes like to get playful and see where something takes me...

I sometimes wonder whether we are just dreams that the Universe has...

Cheers peeps...

I Dreamt My Dream

I dreamt my dream
As I drained my dram;
The dram dreamt itself full
To avoid feeling drained;
I drained my dram
As I dreamt my dream.

The Universe dreamed
That I existed;
I dreamed back
And offered thanks…

Poem - Now And Zen

I have gained much from the wisdoms and philosophies that I have been exposed to over the years. I tend to graze and pick at the various religions and belief systems, and find what resonates with me at a deep level. Buddhism has been an important part of that journey for me...

This poem is a doff of the hat to Buddhism and beyond...

As Krishnamurti would have us believe, or would dare us to explore for ourselves, truth is a pathless land...

Now and Zen

I searched high and I searched low,
I visited places I wasn’t meant to go,
I looked ever farther and farther afield,
Trying to find out how to be healed.

I explored the faiths, the sects and the cults,
Listened to mystic mumblings with similar results,
The spires and minarets always pointed to The Sky,
But every time I asked It, I got no answer why.

I turned to books for guidance, looking to a groaning shelf
Stacked with dusty suggestions on how to help myself,
And while it all made sense, and my head it often nodded,
Not much truly stuck with time, unless I was often prodded.

I turned my face towards the bright light of the East,
Philosophies aplenty and spirituality on which to feast,
The Buddhist in me is truly loving Now and Zen,
I believe it’s the closest to an answer from the world of men…

The answer IS within ourselves – we’ve had it all the time,
But we’ve got to start at the bottom, and it’s one hell of a climb,
Everyone is different, and the answers are never the same,
But to never go searching for wisdom is truly a terrible shame.

Why thank you, @eth...

Funny how you can spend a lifetime looking for happiness and healing from self help books, religions, philosophies, gurus, teachers, masters...

...and then you come full circle, and find that it's all been within yourself the whole time...

Truth is indeed a pathless land...

I had to travel a lot of paths before I realised this fundamental truth about truth... hahaha...

The source of joy, peace, love, compassion, laughter... it is within. No other can tell you what is right for you...

This truth...

It is a powerful, and some would say scary, insight...

Empowering...

Re: Poem - Now And Zen

Our son has just told us that his girlfriend of 3 yrs has decided to split up.

I am so shocked, upset and feel so sad for my son.

This is for my son.......

My dear son

I feel your pain

of what you just told me

that you are alone again

I always thought that you

would marry this girl

but things happen in life

and it's not meant to be

I hope you learn from this

and not be used again

you did so much for them all

it's just not fair

my heart is aching for you

to see you sitting there alone

and sad

you deserve happiness my love

i hope that one day soon

you find someone who will love you

for who you are without judgement

or being judged by her parents

and want you to be someone else

i hope you live your dream of being

in the police force

i really hope this dream is granted

and you succeed in every way

i know it's hard for you now

but with time things will be okay

and you will see you for who you are

and not what others want of you

you are the most caring son i have

always on the look out for me

and so caring when i was in hospital last year

wishing and sending you all my love

peace and happiness and i hope

this time at present is not too hard for you

you don't say much

but i can see how hard this news was for you

i am aching for you too

i love you

Mum xxxxx

That's so beautiful @BlueBay

Sometimes the end of a relationship, even if it appeared to be great or right from the outside, can be a wonderful thing. Once the pain passes, each of the two can pick up their pieces and move forward in ways that we often cannot predict or even imagine...

When my 10 year marriage ended, I thought my romantic ideals of a loving life were over...

But my lovely partner and I - we have found this wonderful thing called love... out of ashes, love is reborn...

Your son will find his way to love again. Life is a journey...

Sending hugs...

Hi @BlueBay

I have only just come online and started to go through posts this afternoon.

What a warm and loving poem. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I am so glad you are there for your son, to comfort him, and stand by him.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

@Silenus. I really connected to your poem Now and Zen, specifically that I am at the point where I am wanting to heal from becoming so broken. I know that I have to find the strength within to find 'me' in all this mess. You keep inspiring me. Thank you💜

PS one day I would love to pick your brain on some things. I have about 100 questions though😜
