Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Hi @BlueBay

It sure has been a while. I have had a good long period of relative stability, which has been a pleasant experience.

How have you been? Hugs and happy vibes beaming your way...

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi, @BlueBay. so sorry to hear. I know from personal experience that financial stress and family stress combined make for a very challenging environment. During such times my physical and mental health would suffer sharp downturns.

Here's hoping that the eternal swing of the pendulum will grant you better times.

I'm so close to drowning

But I'll keep treading water

Telling you I'm fine

While praying that you save me in time

Ask for help

It is what we are always told

But where is my saviour

When I'm being pulled under

I'm raising my hand

But it goes unnoticed

Voices in my head keep yelling

See your just not worth it

Don't trust in love

Look at your life

Those that say that they love you

Reassuring you it will be alright

Are also the ones who keep you under the waves

So even though I'm so close to drowning

I'll keep treading water

I'll keep telling you I'm ok

While silently praying

That you'll pull me out of these waves

I tell you I feel so low that world would be better off if I wasn't here

But as usual you dismiss my pain telling me I'm exaggerating

Cause no one's pain can be worse than yours

Cause no one's trauma can compare to what you went through

You always gotta make me feel bad

Always making me feel guilty for being low

Never believing I suffer too

Cause all attentions gotta be on you

Then you complain when I push you away

Refusing to depend on you

Like a daughter should be able to

If you don't focus on the negative you won't be depressed

Talk to a different dr I never saw the signs for you to have that diagnosis.

You don't know what true childhood trauma is

But the thing is your so wrapped up in yourself

How could you possibly know what I've suffered

Claiming your a good mum

Do you even know the definition

Now because of you I lock my pain and suffering away

Refusing to seek help I need

Because you always dismissed my needs

I prefer to help those around me

Even though I'm drowning

You made me this way

I believe my feelings are invalid

You claim I'm your daughter

Your closest treasure

But you don't even know me

And now you say I'm the reason

Yes I still call you mum

And my son talks with you often

But we are just mere acquaintances

Blood does not make you family

Trying to sleep

But my head is buzzing

Random thoughts...

Pushing anxiety buttons ...

Uh oh...

It's the insomnia demon

Some days are just harder than others

But we we somehow survived whatever life throws at us

But what happens when bads days turn into weeks and then months

How do we cope with no light at the end of the tunnel

How do you turn darkness back into sunshine and colour

How can you focus on positives you can't see

But everyone just says I'm overreacting

But they clearly ain't stuck in the same tunnel as me

Because they can't hear my screams

Or maybe it's just the screams in my head

From the demons that haunt me

But even when it silent I still hear my thoughts echoing

I retreat inside myself to try and find relief from this torment

Every time I slip a little further from reality

What's happening to me

Will somebody help me
