Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

it is nearly a year

i tried to take my life

i always live in fear

and feel I'm not alive

i wonder how it'd be

if I wasn't here no more

i think I would be free

and no pain to the core

i wonder how it'd be

for the ones I left behind

I think they would believe

I'd been out of my mind

some would've moved on

some would still be in pain
some would take so long

and cry forever in the rain

i don't know how I feel

'bout living another year

i think I must believe

one day there'll be no fear

@Former-Member @Maggie hey friends, this afternoon,

I read your poem

Knowing myself

Feel this way daily

Then always

Reasons to stay here

Yet I kind of know

The pain will always be here

Because blood and flesh

We are weak inside

There was one love

In my young life

My grandfather

Held me so tight

My parents give me so much grief

My brother gives me more pains

Then there was one cousin

I lost him at thirty seven

To a head trauma that took his life

I hope I get by

Day after day here

Until that moment

I close my eyes in bed

Oh Lord, I finish my duties here

So friends

Hope we make it through together

it's peaceful here

at the bottom of the ocean

i hear the air bubbling

i see the sun shimmering

i feel the sand under my feet

i taste the vomit in my mouth

i smell

nothing

People see me, yet I remain invisible. Because they never really see me. The real me. The sad, the lonely, the scared, the angry me. I hold it all inside even when I don't want to anymore. Even when I'm desperate to tell you how sad or mad I am. Even when I can't be safe anymore. I say nothing. Because they never ask. Not once, and definitely not twice. Their own feelings are more important than mine. Their voice is more important than mine. Their pain is more important than mine.

They never ask because I smile, I laugh, I get up & show up each day. And they never ask. They don't ask because they don't see. They don't see because I am invisible.

I have so much pain

Inside that I can't settle

Then my loved one looking from above

I don't know if I can bear tonight

The heavy screaming ugliness

You have no idea what it's been like the past two weeks

my emotions have been everywhere

but you haven't even cared enough to call or visit

you've never cared about me or your grandchildren

Msybe when I was born 10 weeks prem I shouldn't have lived

is that what you wanted

never taken an interest

it makes me angry

it hurts

I never forget our hot water unit broke

with three children under three and no money to buy I asked you to help

your answer was no

how could you

I'll never forget the stupid childish things you did to me

like leaving your grandsons present at the gate

couldn't even give it to him in person

I just don't understand

I don't get it

I don't think I can ever forgive you

today I'm angry

if it wasn't for dad I wouldn't be talking to you

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

How stupid am I

always in the wrong

never can I achieve

it's just not right

talk to people

listen to them

take this take thst

well I don't care anymore

its so difficult at times

people don't get it

BPD is the worst

I have ever seen

control your emotions

well what do they know

you need to let go

if only it's that easy

I'm a failure in everything I try

I'm stuck in this hole

and each time I try

I get pushed further down.

this is me .....
