Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

I feel so empty inside
words can not describe
all the time we fight
nothings ever right
I hurt my self to ease the pain
you look at me and think im insane
if you look at my scars you wil see
but you still wont see me
I cant deal with life its getting so hard
im broken and scarred
everything I have done wrong
I thinks its easier if im gone
im your greatest regret

this one is in regard to my mother

A letter to my borderline

My dearest borderline
you are so asinine
you pillage my thoughts
and defile my mind
the things you make me think
dammit, they're so unkind

you take all that is so precious and good
stuffing it under your collar and hood
replacing all that with vitriol and hate
isn't it enough that I don't think I'm great?

spiteful tones spew angry lava
with undercurrents of imperfect drama
whispers over and over in hushed tones
you'll never be enough, you'll always be alone

labels,codes and definitions give a name
but all they do is create more shame
if that isn't enough, I am moody and dark
yes I can be a bitch, no I don't have a heart

I am attention seeking for the 22nd time
hard to control and definitely maligned
crisis lines have heard it all before
my suicide calls are a terrible bore

days are frittered away in silence
and nights are so long, my mind so defiant
the child inside cries and cries, silent tears
no one knows this, no one hears

so what is left for me to bear?
my dearest, darling borderline
you've torn me up, and laid me bare
there's no more to give
nothing even left to share

what is left in this life?
it's a mess, I am in strife
can't bear this way of living
I am giving in and letting go
going to the place I know

Medication Trepidation.

High dose.

Low dose.

A normal life is what I miss the most.

Hi @Sans911 and @outlander.

Your writings are beautiful. They capture so perfectly the rawness of your pain, your struggles, your frustrations. Thank you for sharing your words.

In writing these words, we help ourselves by getting them out of our head and onto the page. We also help others who are going through similar experiences as ourselves.

Together, We Are Alone

Together, we are alone,
Whether we soar or sink like a stone;
Alone, we are together,
Thrown a rope at the end of our tether;
Blown out of the zone or under the weather,
Together, we are alone.

I relate to that especially in our relationships on the net, @Silenus. That poem has an ace rhythm too. Smiles and good vibes your way.

Hi @Former-Member, I relate to your deft poem too, and like how short it is, yet conveys exactly how we can feel about taking medication.

I'm appreciating reading all the poems here. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

My latest poem, seeing the light of day, composed with cold clumsy fingers... it is dedicated to my love, whom each week I must leave owing to work commitments in this country of ours that is too big by far...

~~~~~~~ ♤♧♢♡ ~~~~~~~
The Light of a New Dawn
The westering sun kissed the hill in the morning,
Kissed it goodbye at a new day's dawning,
"I'm off on my journey traversing the sky,"
A morning breeze uttered briefly a sigh.
"I'll see you tomorrow with another kiss,
Even though I must go, it's you I will miss,"
The hill remained standing, rooted to the ground,
Stoically silent, not uttering a sound.
In twenty-four hours the ritual is repeated,
As dark hill by light is lovingly greeted;
Me, the wondering witness, feels the growing heat,
I'll be here tomorrow when sun and hill next meet.
