Decluttering and home maintenance

Decluttering and home maintenance

When MI crisis happens, keeping house can take low priority. But having a messy house can further dent what is often an already low self esteem. Build up of grime follows and rodents have a field day in inaccessible places.

Getting that 2 minute job done (that has been annoying you for years) can lift ones spirit.

I have slowly been decluttering and tidying up our house. The progress made thus far has been achieved primarily by persistently dealing with one item a day.

What has often kept me going has been the encouragement from others @Faith-and-Hope, @Smc @Determined @Shaz51

This tip passed on to me today. Hang all your clothes in the wardrobe with the hanger back to front. As you wear them, return them with the hanger the right way round. In 6-12 months review all items that remain on back to front hangers with a view to donating/selling them.

Thanks @Former-Member @Eve7. @Determined. And well done @Shaz51 👍
Fully packed the car for my X5 day roadtrip tomorrow. Off to see my fav aunt on Sth Coast NSW, then travel Nth to my new home in SE QLD where I believe I need to 'self isolate' for 2wks.

Had to 'declutter' the van. Gave neighbour 2drawer file cabinet, basket + tub. Local scavenger came by several times to collect anything new I wanted to throw after reading the roadside yesterday. Gave her two more bags. Paid another neighbour to take to tip stuff left on curbside pickup and take bins out bin night. And a third neighbour gladly received all my fridge freezer food + It's going to be going in peace.
The amount of 'stuff' I've thrown away this last 2wks has been quite the eyeopener.
Thanks for listening. 💙

@Former-Member Self isolation = opportunity to unpack 😁.

Has a date been set to get stuff out of storage?

Hey @Former-Member, well done, that was a marathon!

I love it that you're going to spend time with a favourite rellie before heading to your new home. That sounds like a great way of recovering, and it'll give you time to let go of the old home ready to move into the new. 🙂 QLD should be lovely, and worth the two weeks Iso.

And me..

With the trip up to Mum and Dad's place being short notice and emotionally stressful, we decided to all travel in my sisters' car, so she and my Hubby could share driving if needed. That meant the car was very full, so there was no bringing stuff home this time, with the exception of a couple of small oddments, and a few "new second hand" clothes that Hubby and Younger Daughter badly needed.

While there... I managed to sort through a fair bit of the clutter that's been filling up the kitchen benchtop, so we'll have better space for food prep and other tasks next time. About half the papers I went through went into recycling, plus some other oddments (unwanted jars, bottles, containers), plus some bin stuff, plus a few things added to the "rehome" box. And I got some weeding and pruning done in the front garden so it doesn't look too unloved, and stuck a few seedling/division plants into blank spots to discourage the weeds fro regrowing.

I think the fact that the house isn't sold is bothering Mum, but really, none of us have the time or mental energy to go any faster than we are.

Back here- Hubby got up on the roof yesterday to screw down a loose bit of tin and some of the ridge capping. Found out that the possums had been using the gap as their "back door", so that's not happening any more. But we still need to deal with their "main entrance". We know where it is, but the fact that we have to wait until after dark, when they've left for the night, makes it a somewhat daunting job. Up a ladder, at night, in the cold... yeah. We'll need to see if we can do as much prep work as possible so that it's straightforward enough to safely complete.

And Younger Daughter is really keen on a school holiday building project. She wants to make herself a little backyard cabin. Kind of a teenage cubby house. The space she was planning on wasn't going to work, but then she twigged that the spot where our semi-portable chookpen was would work better. So this afternoon, the chooks have been relocated as "Step One". And Hubby attached some planks under the automatic feeder so that it would sit level on the ground, and hopefully not jam up as much as it has been.

Younger Daughter was hoping we could shovel out the bedding left behind this afternoon too, but nope, I'm too tired. Tomorrow. I want to make mounds of the bedding in spots where I'm planning on planting some fruit and nut trees- a couple of plums, a couple of hazelnuts and a pear. I also have a cumquat on order, but not sure if that'll be going in the ground or staying in a pot.

Pleased that Younger Daughter is checking things out and making proper plans for her cabin... and also asking us for advice. 🙂 But she wants to do most or all of the actual work herself, along with some schoolfriends. Is good learning experience, and having an achievement like that would do her good.

Haha @Former-Member that pretty much describes my unpacking 🙃. Frypan chord, DVD remote :face_with_rolling_eyes: Why didn't I think to pack them together? Grr lol.
Gosh I got rid of a lot of stuff. Bit of a cleansing I guess. How are you doing? Haven't got much to give atm but hope your good 💙

@Smc you sound so productive with your parents home, and busy parenting... take my hat off to ya 👍

You'll get there @Former-Member unpacking a bit at a time.

Going slowly here , just an occasional item goes out the door without any incoming ... feeling like I have a good system in place in relation to managing clutter ... it feels good 🤓.

Next step is to work on outstanding projects (like finishing framing some photos and putting them up) as well as getting suitable storage which will gradually happen as we renovate.

Now I need to find a cleaning schedule that works...
