Decluttering and home maintenance

Decluttering and home maintenance

When MI crisis happens, keeping house can take low priority. But having a messy house can further dent what is often an already low self esteem. Build up of grime follows and rodents have a field day in inaccessible places.

Getting that 2 minute job done (that has been annoying you for years) can lift ones spirit.

I have slowly been decluttering and tidying up our house. The progress made thus far has been achieved primarily by persistently dealing with one item a day.

What has often kept me going has been the encouragement from others @Faith-and-Hope, @Smc @Determined @Shaz51

This tip passed on to me today. Hang all your clothes in the wardrobe with the hanger back to front. As you wear them, return them with the hanger the right way round. In 6-12 months review all items that remain on back to front hangers with a view to donating/selling them.

@Former-Member, Something I've found on previous house moves is "everything in boxes without sorting" can be a total trap, OR it can be used to your advantage.

We've had some moves where the assorted boxes pretty much stayed that way.... and we've got assorted boxes here, which are things that have been put aside and not gotten back to. But I have managed in the past to have all the mixed stuff boxes neatly in one place, and I'd reguarly pull out one box with three empty boxes nearby- keep, donate and recycle, plus a bag for the total rubbish. Then the much smaller "keep" box is the only one that had things needing a long term place.I got through quite a lot of sorting that way without it ever being an overwhelmingly big task.

All the best with the move. 🙂

"new digs" @Former-Member ? Thanks - I can do with all the help I can find. Just stufffed myself with comfort food ++++ 🤭🤫 to keep me going but backfired re syncope... so laying down again 😕 Raced out the door re inspection (prospective tennants)... only to find its tomorrow not today... getting ahead of myself (starting to fluster). Have three days of inspections booked so far, before I go.
Just bought in load of washing (curtains to fold and pack)
Cleared linen cupboard. Filled another garbage bag for charity.
Decluttering is a cleansing 🙂

Living out of boxes now.

@Former-Member new digs = new home

@Shaz51 bless Mr Shaz helping your Mum even though his feelings towards her may not be overly charitable at present.

We moved some items into the cupboards in the shed today, another box emptied.

We are trying to sort out our rainwater overflow which was not done properly. Have had to take a breather as I am getting a little frustrated. Mr Darcy cannot see what we are doing, his last eye test was fine and he was given the all clear to drive but sometimes I wonder if he has trouble differentiating things of similar colours or when contrast is poor.

Hi Peoples.

I'm still busy outside, shifting tree chips around. The woodchip base I'm building up around the clothesline is coming along nicely. I'm doing it in "bites" of maybe 1m square or so at a time, and properly getting out weeds before laying the woodchips so that it's off to a clean start.

Digging down just outside of the "circumference" of the clothesline today, I struck concrete. It seems to be an old path to the clothesline, buried under about 20 cms or more of soil. I could just infill on top of it with the woodchips, but I'm wondering about making use of it as a nice solid base to put in a garden pond. It's right next to a watertank we put in, so water supply would be no hassle. Will mull over that possibility a bit.

And the two sections of fence that had to be taken out to grind down the tree stump were replaced today. It looks like the guy's done a good solid job of it. But the yard looks like total chaos with all the stuff we had to move out of the way, plus tree bits of assorted sizes, from full trunk down to sawdust and everything in between. We'll get there, and the end result should be worth it. 🙂

Oh my gosh, you guys are so industrious 🏆🏆🏆 I've got 4 days till removalist 😲 so less sorting more packing. Gumtree lady coming to buy wardrobe tomorrow 😁 (have built-ins in new place). Well, pain tabs kicking in so need to do another couple hours before bed. Another inspection tomorrow too.
Darcy,vuopevyou get that water problem fixed. Lots of teething problems with new places. Great you have storage cupboard set up. I'll do the same in my lockup Garage xox

@Former-Member

Having to pack everything is a hard slog. Hope you managed to get a bit more done this evening. I did find packing up for our last move a little easier having containerised a lot of items whilst decluttering as I did think a move was likely. Still had plenty that needed sorting & putting in boxes, especially kitchenware/ books/ gardening gear/ pictures & photos etc.

Didn't get the down pipe finished today, will try again tomorrow.

We did have builder come and do some more work on our porch fill in/ front entrance make over. It is now at lock up stage and far more user friendly than from when we bought the place.

@Smc

It was chaotic at our place for a while and after plugging away for what seemed like ages I noticed that one area of the house started looking just that much better, then another which encouraged me to continue. I was not able to focus on a specific area and was all over the place doing a bit here and a bit there. Mr Darcy was a lot more ordered and once he could see that things were improving would help me work in one room or on one job until it was finished even though at times I was still a bit haphazard in my approach.

@Former-Member, We've found over the years that Hubby finds the sorting side of cleaning up bewildering, but he's good at cleaning up aftewards, so I end up doing the main sort, putting the things he needs to deal with in one place, and he follows through with the broom/vacuum/rake. You learn each other's strengths and weaknesses, and work with those

@Former-Member trust the packing is progressing.
