Something’s not right

Dispensable Me.

Dispensable Me.

I many ways it is a little bit of a miracle that I am still here. I have somehow managed to claw myself out of what was a terrifying psychosis, pretty much all by myself.

I've lost a lot of time. Fallen behind, and had to let go of hopes and dreams for my future, will never realise my potential, all of those sad things that complex mental illness takes away from you. I've had some pretty scary experiences in my life, but that is up there with one of the scariest.

I had the help of a wonderful shrink that chose not to drug me, believing the results would be minimal if not zero, because in his experience severe early life neglect and trauma don't respond. I won the lottery with him. Next May I haven't been on an anti-D in 5 years. And the anti-psychs are only on an as needed basis for chronic insomnia. I'm happy to take meds if I get results, but I didn't, they made me worse, some even made me very suicidal. I just finished Edward Bullmore's The Inflamed Mind, and maybe that's why I have had such extreme and terrible reactions to the meds. I'm just one of those people that don't respond.

Compared to so many other people out there that simply have absolutely no choice but to be drugged against their will, they have their liberty taken from them - I am blessed. I don't really have much to complain about. I should be grateful and just get on with it.

But it's the familial and social that derails me. Doctors can't write a script for close relationships. They can't offer you a bottle of a regular sex life, hugs, cuddles and affection. Someone that understands you, and wants to stick up for you. They can't give you a new family or a loving partner.

I have absolutely no sense of belonging in my life. From what I've read chronic feelings of emptiness are common in people that have experienced severe neglect. Especially from their mother.

I just don't feel any sense of belonging and closeness. Even to my family. They make me feel dispensable and like an operational function.

I have been running my life like a military and a monastery, to try and get well, I am that strict with how much I expose myself to unhealthy habits that trigger my broken biology. But last night I got home from my shrinks and I got blind effing drunk. And it felt bloody fantastic.

I just feel that some holes and hurts can never be healed.

I'm a romantic in many other ways. But not when it comes to the affects of a life of rejection, when you are an inherently affectionate person - the damage just feels permanent and very personal. Like my outside world is mocking my inner world. And on purpose.

I think that my early years changed the architecture in my brain and it will always be a vacuous hole because I am perpetually exposed to my familiy's aloof, stiff upper lip, no hugs, coldness. I was the Black Baby, the polar opposite.

I made the silly mistake of reading the news again. And the story of the little girl at the dance studio was very triggering. The thing that made me the saddest was the police commissoner's impassioned rage and determination that he should rot in jail.

I can't imagine one elder in my family let alone a parent being passionately outraged when it comes to my own story. I didn't even get one hug. Not one. Not one single person in my family embraced me.

It's just soul destroying.

Re: Dispensable Me.

Hey @frog,

I'm sorry you experienced that. It's so awful. And something that is extremely difficult to create on ones own. It took me many years to stop attracting people into my life who replicated the same way I was treated at home. I recreated familial patterns in friendships and the women I was drawn to. Almost like I expected people to treat me like dirt or with indifference.

One thing I find for myself, and other people who've had similar experiences in early life, is that we are subconsciously attracted to people who are incapable of meeting our needs.

We repeat the patterns.

It's taken me many many years to get to the stage where I can ask for my needs to be met and feel like I am worthy of that. I have also realised that if I was to settle down with a partner one day that they must possess certain personality traits and that I am not being demanding or fussy in needing them. I need physical affection and closeness and intimacy, and it's OK that, that is one of my highest needs. I actually begin to start to feel unstable if I am being rejected with a fair bit of regularity or find myself in a situation where I thought someone would be very warm and affectionate, but they're not, or only are to reel you in, and then the veil comes down. I know that sounds sooky, but my doctor said given my childhood and innate personality it's OK to want and need that and I'm not to let anyone shame me for it. He said he thinks it a miracle I'm not cold as ice. I guess I've just had so many people put me down, or I haven't been the best judge of character. I hope to get better at judging character.........but it's brutal out there.

I would looooooooooooooooove a dog, but I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and can't get one.

I also love the outdoors Frog.

And thanks for letting me off the hook with all my self discipline every now and then. I'm still human. I went for a really long walk today and am sore.

Take care Corny

Re: Dispensable Me.

Thank you @Appleblossom for your very sweet message.

I have read a lot about attachment and early life trauma. I agree with you. It's a delicate balance. I think you have to be careful to pick the right time to read it and delve into it, because you can be left feeling a bit despairing. Like you feel, "well I am just totally stuffed, because the damage is done and irreparable". But it does give me more self compassion and personal insight as to why I am the way I am, and it wasn't my fault.

Re: Dispensable Me.

Thanks @outlander, I'm not too bad. I'll take a shower now and try an wind down. I went for a long walk today and am sore and a little sunburnt but it was a beautiful day the water was turquoise.

It does feel good to chat to people about mental illness that actually get it. A lot of people I know have experienced it, but there are varying degrees and severity, and for some it doesn't really disrupt their lives on any major level. They don't experience too much loss with it.

I hope you get results. Chronic pain is terrible. Trying to get at nerves is pretty tricky for medicine. One of my friends is in a real bad place with it right now, very disabling, and I was mortified that the doctor has prescribed her a whole heap of opioids.

Good luck Outlander. I know you struggle with sleep like me. I hope its a restful night.

@Corny I've just read your first post. So much I wish I could say but can't. Few words, I apologise for that. But feelings are huge. Walking with you when I can, understanding so very deeply.💕💜

Re: Dispensable Me.

@Corny I am ok, I am trying to finally develop my personality as I know now that I am an empath, now I am only listen to my innwr feelings as that is the only thing I trust! (Sucks) anxiety levels are high, the current movement in the U.S is really interesting but it also concerns me as I feel that I have a role in it, don't ask me why yet I will discover it when I am in harmony with myself.

I really hope you are not looking back as that isn't the way you go!🤗

Lots of love ronny
