Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

MRI Neck Scan (last week) Report shows (says) -

4 Compressed Discs in my Neck (Spine), pushing on the Nerves in spine.

Report says this may be what caused my Fingers on left Hand to Go Numb (loss of feeling sensation) for over 4 months - & Tingling sensation & Loss of strength & coordination in my Left Arm (for over 4 months).

The MRI Neck Scan Report did not say what to do about it - or What possible Treatment there is for this.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi everyone.

I've not written here for quite a while.

I had a shock a few days ago.

I was recalled for a Dr’s Appnt very quickly (in less than 2 days) for Blood Test Results.

The Blood Tests were to determine cause of sudden dramatic weight loss - When I was already at my minimum weight (before) loss.

Which has coincided with my 4 weeks in this new Job - 10 to 16 hour long work shifts.

The Blood Test showed very Low Iron levels - Approaching Anaemic.

The Bowel Screening Test showed Blood loss.

Dr has Referred me for a Colonoscopy – Which may have a 6 month wait (or more) for Public Hospital - When Dr said this is urgent.

Colonoscopy is to find out why I have internal blood loss.

I have had a Colonoscopy done many years ago - With no associated underlying conditions.

This time is very different.

I am very familiar with the wait times for these procedures.

I have felt so weak & wobbly after working these 10 hour (5.00am Start) Work Shifts - That it is taking me 2 or 3 days after (with no work) to partly recover.

Now I know one possible cause, or reason why.

If the Iron Tablets do not work - Then Dr will have to give me a Transfusion (he said).

I've had that at least once before too - Yet this time is quite different.

I have been so physically weak, these past few days - That I can barely stand up.

I did not have any energy today (Sunday) to go out & get my shopping.

I've had to spend most of today, just trying to get my energy levels back up to Half functional....

Thanks @Shaz51 I appreciate your Reading my Post & your Supports.

I've felt rather lost on the Forums, since a certain member left (De-Registered).

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Shaz51 I've not been to Cancer Clinic Yet.

Appointment isn't until July (Referral from Colonoscopy/ Gastroscopy).

I will have to go to GP & other Dr's appnts, before I get to that one.

Oh, you are having to go to so many Specialist's appnts - That sounds exhausting.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Shaz51 How are you?

Thanks so much for your care & concern.

Sitting with me is great.

Physically exhausted most of every day, at moment.

Even on the days when I'm not working.

There has been not follow-up, no treatment or resolution yet - For the multiple intestinal Ulcers (internal blood loss) diagnosed during my Colonoscopy & Gastroscopies in January this year.

I have not yet managed to put any of that weight back on - To get back into my healthy weight range.

Even after more than 6 months.

Ohh sending you lots of tender hugs my friend @Adge

Do you have food restrictions??

How are all our darling birds xx

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Thanks @Shaz51 I shall send lots of Hugs back to you.

As it sounds like you are having a rough time yourself.

Drs did not suggest any food restrictions, so no so far.

They did say to avoid taking any Anti-Inflammatories.

Which is tough, because only Anti-Inflammatories help with/ ease my Shoulder pain (both shoulders) & Neck.

I have had 2 Baby Budgies + 2 Baby Bengalese Finches, come out of their Nests in the past few weeks.

Sadly 2 Adult Bengalese Finches escaped from Aviary on Saturday (2 days ago) - Whilst I was cleaning Aviaries & filling Seed & Water.

They are very hard to get/ find to buy now.

They're gone for good.
